Task Three: Hope for the Best
Phantom
Rover
Antidote
Manipulator
Nafisa looked grim as she closed the four heroes' files with a heavy sense of finality.
"Two heroes in critical condition and four dead on what should have been a routine mission? Four?" Pratibha was pacing, lips pulled back in a snarl of helpless rage. "This is unacceptable. We haven't taken casualties of this magnitude since the divisions were founded--hell, we haven't lost this many since Project Phoenix disbanded."
"Null and Hourglass might still pull through," Nafisa protested weakly. "And if you want to be technical Manipulator's not dead exactly..."
Pratibha's eyes flashed with anger, but Amanda beat her to the punch. "Devi's got a point, babe. Frozen in a fractured piece of time that we don't know how to unmake or even analyze properly ain't much better than dead."
"Damn right it's not," Pratibha seethed. "Where are Sakura and Corona? We need to discuss this now."
Amanda sighed. "Crown's off in Guatemala trying to explain to the authorities there why a giant bird monster went all Godzilla on a historical landmark. Sakura...last I heard she was in the ICU with Null and Hourglass, trying to replicate Blacklight's old 'heavenly healing' trick. She won't be out for a while, so it's up to us to hold down the fort."
"Actually, it'll be up to you two to hold down the fort," Nafisa corrected. "I need to get back to the lab to finish the autopsy on the creature. Several of the biologists seem to think my nanoswarm will be able to provide a more sophisticated analysis--or at least figure out where the bugger keeps its DNA so we can study the genome."
Amanda blinked and tilted her head. "It's been a while since high school bio, but doesn't everything on the planet keep its DNA in every cell?"
"Just about everything on Earth, yes," was the cryptic reply.
"You two can science at each other all you like. I'm going to, you know, make sure this doesn't happen again." Pratibha's voice was hard, and a glint had entered her eye. Nafisa noted with some alarm that this was the same glint that had appeared right before she had picked up a boat full of particularly irritating reporters and flown it at nearly 200 miles per hour to the nearest port.
"And how do you plan on doing that, babe?"
"We've clearly been slacking off on our combative and physical conditioning. I intend to correct this. Immediately."
