Quarterfinals: Caliban
"Thou wert but a lost monster."
This is a story about the Other.
The Other has no name. It has no language-it's lived too long alone to have one of those, beyond a few broken words. Its tale is really a tragic one: a mother and a child of four, shipwrecked and injured on the shores of the island. Their boat was not missed. Their companions had drowned-and they were the lucky ones.
The mother had been injured in the wreck: the wounds soon festered in the hostile jungle, and her child was left alone and forgotten. It wandered through trees and streams for years alone, sharpening its wits on the terrible centipedes and spiders, the serpents and poisonous waters. It saw the things that lurked in the deep, and learned to fear and hate them in time. In time, the mother's body rotted away, and only her bones remained: loneliness festered as pustulent as her wounds, gnawing away at the Other's mind until all that was human had rotted away. The Other loved her, and hated her too for leaving it all alone. The Other loved and hated the island that raised it in exactly the same way.
The Other is very practiced at hating. And now that Arnold Brown has fallen to the hunter in the ocean, it's confident in its ability to exact vengeance on the world that abandoned it.
