A Note on Deaths and Being Voted Off
Since it seems a few of you are getting a little upset, angered and frustrated by our scoring and judging. I'm going to set a few things straight.
~~~~
1. When you enter the games, you choose to follow our scores. Every person has a different mind set on what they think is fantastic. By signing up to be a tribute, you basically allowed us to judge your writing and offer tips and advice. Those of you who have been asking for advice on how to raise your score, we've been trying to give you the best tips possible.
2. Some of you say you're improving, but your score isn't moving. Here's the thing, everyone has been improving so basically you should be happy you score isn't dropping. Some people just grow at a faster rate. YES we do compare your work to others, and NO we do not judge the contest based off yours, and yours alone only. You could be the best writer imaginable but someone is slightly better so of course, they'll get the higher score.
3. We do not show favoritism, and we are not biased. A few of you are saying that it was wrong for us to pick sponsors, or do sponsoring at all. Saying it's an unfair advantage. One thing, how is it unfair? We're rewarding those who we think do an incredible job. Yes, when you are sponsored you do get bonus things but if you didn't notice by how we split up your rankings, we challenge those who do good by giving them obstacles. As humans do, you always go after the stronger dominant, so those who are lower scoring, they get little advantages.
4. We treat everybody differently. If we feel you need to improve, we'll tell you. Of course things get hard when you have 26 people coming up at the same time trying to get advice. Yes we care and yes, we'll respond eventually, but PLEASE keep in mind that we have a whole lot of things we do to get this contest moving. Like James Peachton for example, his writer came up to us and asked us semi kindly what she was doing wrong and needed to improve in and with the help we gave her, she showed tremendous improvements. Since we knew she'd be on the voting list do to her past scores, we gave them a bye.
Once again, NO it's not favoritism.
5. If you haven't looked, we give small bonuses for the little things in the very top of the 'Scores and Initial Opinions' part of each task. If you've looked at the names we give them to, it doesn't depend on the score they receive, but just what we really liked. In saying this, no, you are not a horrible writer if we don't give you a bonus or your rank moves up. Surprise us a little, go Hannibal Lector...No don't do that but you get the point.
6. As we narrow the scores down a lot of the good writers will be voted off. Only one will be a winner but when we narrow it down to the final last tributes, we are going to look at the growth and everything they've accomplished to see who is the actual winner will be. e hate to see you get discouraged, because we've all been there. Me, and Tender both are in a lot of our own games and know the scores can be tough to look at.
7. I guess this is a good as time as not to say this. Just because you've been voted off doesn't mean you are out of the running, just yet. I know you are probably either completely pissed off and frustrated if you've just read this all and are still confused. But at the end of the games there's going to be an Acknowledgments section and those tributes that really stood out to us (and not by just there writing alone) are also going to be recognized and rewarded.
So stop being a pessimists and look at everything you've accomplished. I've said this twice now!
8. How exactly can you bring up your scores? This is asked almost every single day. No, it's not annoying, just really common to hear. So this is all I can say:
Work hard, and don't turn in your entry unless you're happy with it. Don't tell us if you don't like it because that sets a bad mood because we automatically expect the worst from it.
Pay attention to the small details, it's those little things that stand out. Don't be afraid to use a little figurative language here and there. Ex: 'The grey suit looked amazing on the man' could easily become:
"The crisp tuxedo that the man wore with a stint, was the color of charcoal and fit to him like feathers on an owl."
Venture more, allow your character to have a personality. Learn their things, their likes and their attitude. Even if it never gets added to the actual story, it'll put you in the right mind set to write and feel happy about it. Even S. E. Hinton said she knew Thomas' favorite cereal even though it was never included...
9. You guys honestly have the good end of the stick. As the Game Makers, we have to: A) Make our own Character Forms and stick to their likes and interests and not our own, B) Work hard on all the mini stories and setting up the tasks, and gods above that is a painstaking process. Since I personally hate waiting days for a contest to score and post their entries, I try my hardest to post them as soon as the limit is up. C) Just coming up with ideas is hard, I know that seems like the easy part but it's really not. D) Dealing with the entire process of posting all the tribute's entries. We have been doing witchcraft trying to get the italics to stay but I'm so sorry if they're not on your entry.
I spend a whole day leading up to the deadline preparing the tasks. Even though it's a butt load and at the moment I'm currently sick and sneezing my heart out, I do it because I love it. No, I'm not the only one who works on this, the other Game Makers, Tender especially are so helpful.
Basically, I'm not mad and I'm trying not to rant but please take this all into careful consideration. The voting off is the worst part to do because we love to see you grow as writers and never stop.
