VII. Sunwolf

"Papi?"  Auris peers into the ember-lit main room, and Tailwind looks up from where he sits amidst a pile of furs, his shoes just beside him as he massages the life back into his feet.

"Eilie," he murmurs with a smile, gesturing her closer.

Auris hesitates, walks softly across the floor, and sits apart from him on the couch, pulling one leg up under herself as she stares down at her lap.

"Is something the matter?"

She bites her lip.  "I...um..."

Tailwind lets down his foot, shifting to offer his full attention to her.

"I'd like to request a new name."

"A new one?"

Auris nods.

"What for?" Tailwind asks into the silence.

"Um...for..."  She exhales, and looks up at him, finally meeting his eyes.  "For Miris.  The Honorborn."

"Oh.  You've—"

She waves him off.  "I've thought about it, yes, and...and I love her.  She's everything.  I can feel her in all I do, and...she's everywhere.  How could I not want to dedicate myself to that?  How could I ever wish not to be honorable?  If...if I could be anything, I want to be that.  I want to be honorable, I want...I want to be it so much that those around me can't help but reflect it, to...be a beacon to all, to...any who might take heed."  She ducks her head, cheeks flushing.  "I've been thinking about it for a long time."

Tailwind nods slowly.

"Um...what do you, um...think?"

"I...don't know, really.  If it's important to you..."

"It is."

Tailwind spreads his hands in a shrug.  "Then so be it."

A weight lifts from Auris' shoulders, and she smiles at him.  "I'll ask the chieftain tomorrow," she says, half to herself, as she turns a contented gaze to the embers.

Tailwind chuckles.  "You could call her Amaa."

Auris frowns.  "That's different."

"So be it," he says with raised hands, though amusement still colors his tone, and Auris smiles again at him, and snuggles closer to his side, hugging his arm.

"Did your trip go well?" she murmurs.

"Aye, well enough.  There's a new slide between here and the Avakalathi that I had to find a way around, but it happened when no one was there, so far as we can tell, so it should be all right."

"That's good..."

"Their Skywatcher agreed the winds are low this year, and it will likely be warmer."

Auris hums her acknowledgment, and eventually Tailwind lets off his recounting as it becomes clear she's fallen asleep.
