twenty-three

"I hope you know that I am determined to win you something, even if it's just a stupid glow stick" Harry comments as he and Aurelia walk away from the ticket booth with their bright pink wristbands.

Aurelia playfully bumps his shoulder, "I knew that before we left the hotel, but thank you for verbally clarifying."

Harry grins, she knows him so well and he absolutely loves it. "You're very welcome, sweetheart. What would you like to ride first? They've got a bunch of spinny things, oh joy, a Ferris wheel, a rollercoaster, please don't say that one, some drop rides, yikes why are all of these terrifying, and then the booths where I plan on spending a ton of money just to win you a prize."

Aurelia hums as she constructs a rough plan in her mind, "Ferris wheel is last for sure. Let's go on a spinny on, you pick."

Harry sighs, he isn't really a fan of carnivals. Everything but the booths either terrifies him or makes him feel sick, but Aurelia wants to have a good time at a carnival with him and that's what she's going to do.

Harry decides to suck it up for the sake of his love because she's far more important than his sill fear of heights. Thankfully, not everything that spins is fast or overly frightening. Harry leads Aurelia to the swings, they can't sit together, but he can sit next to her and hold her hand nonetheless. Plus, it will be moderately relaxing with the light breeze that it generates, or so he hopes.

Aurelia rolls her lips in and tries not to laugh as Harry helps her with her little chain seatbelt. He's such a cutie with his fear of heights and pretty much everything that she finds fun. The swings are really for little kids, but she isn't going to complain because it's nice even though it's a little boring.

Harry holds her hand a little tighter than he usually does as they lift off the ground and Aurelia can't stop herself from laughing.

"What's so funny?"

Aurelia continues to smile, You're doing your tense thing again and we're only on the swings, Harry. We don't have to go on the crazy stuff if you don't want to. I'm okay with the Ferris wheel more than once and the little booths that are set up, I promise."

Harry laughs because that sounds like it will bore her to death. "No, no we're going to do whatever you want to do and I'm going to have fun either way. You've proved to me that it can be done, I just have to warm up a little bit, that's all."

Aurelia smiles and swings her legs like she always does. It's much different up in the air and twirling around slowly and she finds it much more enjoyable. "I actually quite like this, it's very nice. But seriously, just lead me around on the stuff that you can handle first, I pretty much have fun on everything because I can't really see how boring it is."

Harry lets out a small sigh because he really wants her to do what she wants to do. "Aurelia..."

Aurelia holds up her free hand, "Nope, you're not arguing. I want you to be comfortable and honestly, I have fun just being with you. We can sit and eat funnel cake for an hour and then go home and I'll still say that I had a great time. So, you get comfortable and if you don't want to go on anything other than the Ferris wheel, let me know and we'll make our own fun just goofing around."

They're slowing down now, the cool breeze rapidly declining as the swings descend. Harry's voice carries softly despite the loud noises that encompass the space that the carnival is located in and the few blocks surrounding it. "Are you sure? I don't want to hold you back from anything."

Aurelia smiles softly, "Harry, do what you're comfortable with. Don't stress yourself because of me. I want you to have fun and to not be terrified and I always have fun with you. I really don't care what we do, I'm just happy with you."

Harry's relieved, he'll do anything for her, even give his life if he has to, but with her reassurance that he can take it slow and easy if he needs to, it feels like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

He makes it a point to kiss her cheek as they exit, which has a few people audibly saying 'aw' and has Aurelia slightly blushing.

"You mentioned funnel cake, would you like some? It looks really good."

Aurelia laughs lightly, "Yes, I would love some funnel cake. As long as you get it with extra powder because it's much better that way."

Harry stops her and leans down to kiss her. He does this often because he feels it necessary to keep things spontaneous and not bland. That, and he really just wants to kiss her all the time. She's the drug that keeps him addicted and he never wants to quit her.

They share a funnel cake with extra powder and talk for quite a bit before Harry decides that it's time to try his luck with one of the many game booths that litter the grounds.

"What game are you gonna play? The balloon one? The water one? Oooh, or the strength one? God, I'd love to watch you do that. You'd probably look super-hot and adorable at the same time."

Harry grins at the thought and decides that that's the game he's going to play. "I'm gonna do the strength one just because you said that. And I'm gonna win you that massive fluffy penguin right there because you love the cold and penguins."

Aurelia giggles as he pulls her along excitedly, "For your sake, I hope that you do."

"Why's that?"

Aurelia bites back her smile, "Because your ego will take a massive blow if you don't."

Harry playfully rolls his eyes, his ego really isn't that big, he just exaggerates to make her laugh. "I mean, if you don't want that penguin all you have to do is say so..."

Aurelia rolls her eyes and nudges his shoulder with hers, "You know very well that I would adore that penguin."

Harry laughs and pulls her to a stop just in front of the game, his lips quick to brush against hers and lift into a smile when her breath catches. "Not as much as I adore you."

His lips mold with her sweetly and with a touch of passion that has butterflies taking flight in her stomach and her heart rate to slightly accelerate.

Aurelia finds herself gently biting her lower lip when he breaks the contact. She wishes that he'd kiss her until she can't breathe, like he sometimes does in their hotel rooms and in secluded areas that they'd stumble upon during their adventures.

He squeezes her hand gently before detaching their fingers, "I'm going to win you that penguin."

Aurelia bites back her smile as he walks up to the towering bell post and pays the man for his three tries. She speaks a bit louder to make sure that he hears her because she's not sure how fat he's gone, "What happens if you don't!?"

Harry grins before calling back, "Then you can take me on any ride of your choosing! And by any, I mean any."

Aurelia's biting her lip again because she likes where that suggestion is going. "Can I take you up on that offer either way? Or is it no penguin exclusive?"

Harry smirks as he lifts the hammer over his shoulder, "Penguin exclusive, unless it's the other kind of any that I was alluding to. That's a whenever you want exclusive, no questions asked."

Aurelia blushes and keeps her comments to herself because they are very direct and very personal things that shouldn't be shouted at a carnival. She hears him smack the button with the hammer and the little tick as the metal rises quickly before it plunks back down to the bottom. He's missed, but she'll never know by how much.

He tries again, and this time it takes a bit longer for the metal to fall, but the bell doesn't sound and he's informed that it's his last try for his money.

Unbeknownst to Aurelia, his third try missed the bell by only about an inch or less and he was so close.

He's going to get her that penguin. He pays the worker for another three times and rolls his shoulders.

"Fourth time's the charm."

Aurelia flushes at the familiar words. He had to have gotten close in the first three tries or he wouldn't have said that and she knows it.

She hears the mallet smack the button and, not long after the bell at the top sounds before the metal falls back to the bottom with a heavy smack.

Harry balls his fist and sticks his hand out only to pull it back victoriously, "Yes!"

"Alright, you can pick any prize that you want. Congratulations."

The carnie doesn't sound too thrilled with his job, but who does anyway? All jobs are tedious eventually, even if it's the best thing in the world.

Harry happily tells the carnie that he wants the "giant, fluffy penguin" and he hands it over to Aurelia with a blinding smile on his lips.

"A giant, fluffy penguin for my beautiful girlfriend."

Aurelia beams, "I'm actually really impressed. I wasn't going to tell you, but I can tell that you're excited."

Harry laces their fingers together and pulls her toward the Ferris wheel. "Are you really? I was expecting you to tell me that arrogance isn't attractive."

Aurelia laughs brightly, "Yes, I really am. That was very impressive, although, I couldn't exactly see it."

Harry grins because she's proud of him and he loves that feeling. "Only for you, my love. I probably would've given up if it was anyone else, to be honest. Well, unless we happened to have a little girl and it was for her. Then, I'd spend my life's savings just to make her happy too."

Aurelia smiles softly at the mention of children, "Speaking of children, have you found anyone yet?"

Harry's smile turns into a slight frown because he found a couple that were interested, but it didn't really work out when they told him why they needed a surrogate. "No, a few were interested until I explained why we need a surrogate. Then they felt bad and didn't want to do it because you have a high probability of not being able to be a 'proper mother." Which is ridiculous because you can be a proper mommy and I can do just fine by myself and with our families to help. I was actually going to ask if you'd like me to ask my sister?"

The line stops moving and so do they. Aurelia's frowning and it looks like there's more shine to her eyes than just the reflection of the bright lights. "I can still be a proper mommy..."

Harry's thumb lightly runs over her index finger, a soft look taking hold of his features. "I know sweetheart; people are just...people. I'm almost ninety-five percent sure that my sister will do it for us, if that's what you really want."

The line starts moving quickly again because they've let people off and are boarding people again. "Are you sure?"

Harry nods and gives her hand another squeeze, "Positive."

Aurelia nods briefly because she really wants a child and it won't hurt to ask. "Okay, then I suppose you can ask, it doesn't hurt to try. Thank you again Harry, it really does mean the world to me."

They're at the front of the line now and Harry helps her into the little car and climbs in quickly after her, "I know. We'll figure it out though, I promise. If not, then I'll rescue a puppy for you and that can be our little baby, God knows they certainly require the same amount of work."

Aurelia leans closer to him, the night air giving her a slight chill as they ascend. "I love you."

Harry presses a sweet kiss to her forehead, "Not as much as I love you."

They sit together in a comfortable silence until their car stops and Aurelia has to ask, "We're not at the top, are we?"

Harry laughs lightly and Aurelia's smile grows, "Actually, we are."

Aurelia hums and closes her eyes, although it really doesn't make a difference. "Does it look nice?"

Harry laughs lightly and shrugs his shoulders, "I don't know, I'm too busy looking at you."

Aurelia's cheeks have a light tint to them, "Are you going to kiss me now, or just continue to make me wait?"

"Demanding." Harry jokes before pressing his lips to hers, the taste of his peppermint gum still on his lips and causing Aurelia to smile through their kiss.

"I like it when you do that."

Aurelia's slightly confused because she's not quite sure what she did, "When I do what?"

"Smile when we kiss."

Her blush deepens considerably, "I can't help it sometimes. You make me feel like the most important thing in the world and it's hard not to smile when I feel like that."

Harry kisses her softly, his lips lingering for a moment before he retracts them. "That's exactly how you should always feel. And, if I make you feel any less special, tell me because that means that I'm doing something wrong. You're my world and nothing less, Aurelia, and I wouldn't want it any other way."
