sixteen
"Okay, now that I won't be called rude or an unhappy guest, what on Earth possessed you to want to do this?"
Currently, they're in an ice hotel in Sweden. Harry's past the point of freezing, but Aurelia seems to be perfectly content with the temperature. It's a little weird considering that the situation was reversed when they were in France and it was a lot warmer than below zero, but Harry doesn't question it because maybe she's just gotten used to it.
For the most part, cold weather is alright, but actually staying in a hotel made out of ice? That's just insane.
Aurelia laughs and sits on the bed, "It's cool! Literally!"
Despite how cold he is, Harry finds himself laughing with her, his eyes trained on her beautiful smile, "You're funny. But seriously? You were possessed to sleep in an ice hotel because it's cool?"
Aurelia swings her feet because she can't exactly reach the floor anymore and it's a habit she has when she's just sitting somewhere. She always feels like she's really short, but she's actually 5'4, so it's a little puzzling how she's always floating when she sits somewhere.
"Well no, I also wanted to come here because it's hand crafted and a once a year thing. Of course, when I added it to the list I was hoping that I would get to see it, but I'm happy just being here. We have a heated bathroom and a sauna in our room by the way. So, you can warm up whenever you want to, really."
The notion of a sauna excites him a little more than it should, "Really!? That's awesome! Are all of the rooms like this?"
Aurelia shakes her head no, "No, each is different by its art and we're in a suite, so that's why we have the pillow top and the warm bathroom. I could have made you sleep on an ice bed, but I like you, so you dodged a bullet there."
Harry's looking around the room in amazement as Aurelia sits on the bed with a smile on her lips, "Thank you for that. I don't suppose you'd be up for some sauna time with me?"
Aurelia's smile quickly morphs into a smirk as a few choice scenarios play in her head, "Depends."
Harry looks at her curiously, his eyebrows raised, "On what?"
The edges of her lips lift up further at her inappropriate thoughts, "What your idea of sauna time with you is."
Harry's momentarily confused because all he's thinking about is sitting in a sauna in towels and basking in the difference of temperature. "What do you-oh right! People are usually naked in saunas over here. Uhm..."
Aurelia laughs, the sound soothing and relaxing to his ears. "That's correct. I'd be happy to because it's relaxing, but only if you can promise not to make things awkward."
Harry struggles with his answer because he doesn't like leaving her alone because she can't really do anything, but he knows that he'll make it awkward if he sees her naked because she already has him so flustered with her recent interest of showing him her chest.
He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, "No, I will make it awkward, sorry. Maybe I'll just use it when you take a bath?"
Aurelia smiles softly even though she was hoping that he could control himself because she's actually a little cold. "Bummer, they really are nice. Did you use the one at the last spa that we went to?"
Harry nods even though remembering that experience is a little uncomfortable because he's not really a fan of seeing other guy's junk, "Yeah. It was kind of weird, but then I guess you get used to it."
She doesn't laugh because she knows that it probably wasn't so comfortable for him. It's different for her because she can't see anyone around her, but she's pretty sure that guys don't want to see each other's goods while they're trying to relax.
"Right. If you change your mind, let me know. It's not like I can see you anyway, if that's what you're worried about."
Harry shakes his head, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips because he's definitely not worried about her seeing him naked or anything. He's worried about not being able to keep his hands and his lips to himself and accidentally coaxing her into something that she didn't intend to do for a while longer.
"No, I think I'm okay. What's the plan for today? Just lounging around in here and talking?"
Aurelia lays back on the soft mattress, her legs still hanging off of the side of the bed. "Yes, exactly. Unless you change your mind about the sauna, then we'll talk in there."
Harry laughs and lays back on the bed with her, a relaxed sigh leaving his lips. "I'll think about it for sure. Want me to put the music on, as per the usual?"
Every time that they stay in and talk, or cuddle and kiss, Harry plays music from his phone because Aurelia doesn't really like sitting in silence for too long.
Aurelia smiles at the ceiling, a familiar song running through her mind, "Yes, please. Preferably something by Maroon 5, if you don't mind."
Harry laughs as he unlocks his phone and scrolls through his music, "Any specific reason?"
Aurelia shrugs because she doesn't really have a reason other than the fact that she really likes the music that the band puts out, "Dunno, just in that type of mood I suppose."
"It Was Always You" starts to play and Aurelia sings along softly. Harry wishes that he could record her, not just because of her voice, although he does think that she has a lovely voice and it's soothing to his ears, but because of the simplicity of the moment and how happy she looks just singing along and lying in bed.
He settles for second best and takes some pictures instead, which she hears and smiles brighter for. Sometime into their little acoustic session Harry finds himself asking, "Aren't you afraid?"
She has no idea what he's asking about because the question is very vague, but she knows that when they sit around like this he sometimes starts to think about the fact that she's dying. "Of what? Dying?"
"Yes, exactly that."
She takes a moment to deliberately pick the right words in her mind because she knows that he's going to ask her why the moment after she answers. "No. Death is unavoidable, it's a part of life that's inescapable since birth. It's written in our very nature. The problem is that people spend too much time worrying about death and not living their lives to their fullest potential. We're born to live and to die and that seems to be forgotten somewhere along the way. I'm not afraid of dying, even though I can die on any given day at any given time, because I'm making the most of my life and I know that something better awaits me when I go."
Harry admires her way of thinking so much. The way that she tries to focus on the positive outcomes rather than dwelling on the negatives is inspiring and she doesn't know it, but she's changed the way that he thinks about a lot of things, including life.
Where he had found life listless and boring before, he now finds it to be a gift and something to treasure even when nothing really spectacular is happening. Aurelia's made him realize that life doesn't have to be extraordinary to be worth living, and he won't forget that for as long as he lives.
"That's probably the smartest and sincerest thing that I've ever heard."
Aurelia smiles softly as his warm hand finds hers and he gently links their fingers together. "It's as genuine as I could fit to words."
"Never Gonna Leave This Bed" starts to play and Aurelia starts to sing along softly. Harry pays attention to every single detail about this moment, the way that her lips form the words, the light that's filtering through the room, the way that her hand fits in his, and how her gentle voice caresses each and every note as if she's singing a child to sleep.
It's one of the most beautiful moments that he's spent with her and he catalogues it as one of his favorites so that, when somebody asks, he can easily tell them everything about the moment and the way that he felt just being there with her in that cold room.
The song's just come to an end and he hears her speak softly, like she's afraid to hear her own voice. "I wanted to have a baby you know."
Everything about the moment softens, like a nice filter has been added to the world at her confession. Harry's hand lightly caresses hers, his thumb running over her skin in a very soothing motion as he turns his head to look at her. His eyes are soft and sad because he knows that she won't be able to do that and so does she.
"You did?"
Aurelia nods, a small thing that he wouldn't have caught if he hadn't been paying attention. "Yes, just so I could be a mommy some day because I envy my mother and her love. And, well, babies are adorable and I wanted an adorable little baby of my own to love like my mother loves me."
There are tears in her eyes now, her breaths are low and sad and her expression is heartbreaking. Harry feels his heart constricting in his chest, "Aurelia..."
Aurelia closes her eyes briefly and gently wipes at them with her free hand. She didn't mean to even bring the topic up, but something about the music and the atmosphere around them had her thinking about it and she just couldn't stop the words before they left her lips.
"I'm sorry. I don't even know why I said that."
Harry can't take it anymore and pulls her close to him, his hands are just under her bent knees and her head is in his shoulder. "You don't ever have to be sorry, Aurelia. Not even for making me fall hopelessly in love with you."
He hears her sniffle, her hands twisting in the soft material of his shirt as she clings to him, her only friend in the world and the only person that she's ever given her heart to.
"That's what I'm the sorriest for. I knew that you'd fall in love with me and I let you. I let you fall in love with me even though I knew that I was going to leave forever and break your beautiful heart. I'm such a terrible person."
Harry lifts her head gently and runs his thumb across her cheek, "You're not a terrible person, Aurelia. You know that I knew that too, and I deliberately stuck to you because I knew that you were what I needed and what I was missing, what I wanted. All it took was a moment Aurelia. One split moment and I knew that I was going to fall in love with you. I can't explain how or why, but it was there and I knew it and I knew what you had to be going through to be at my dad's support group, so I fell willingly. You are the most beautiful person I have ever had the pleasure to know and that includes every little thing about you. You can't be sorry for the way things were meant to play out. I know that you know that, even if you don't want to relate it to this, to us, right now."
Aurelia detaches herself from Harry and throws her arms around his neck, holding him to her tightly as the tears cascade like waterfalls from her eyes. She can't think of anything else to say other than the three words that have never carried so much meaning until he came around.
"I love you."
Harry holds her equally as tight, he holds her like she's going to vanish into thin air at any moment. "You know that I love you too."
