fourteen
"Aurelia, can I borrow one of your hair ties again?"
Aurelia laughs because Harry asks her for her hair ties more often than she uses them herself. "I suppose so, do you think that maybe you might solve your problem by just, I don't know, cutting your hair?"
Harry gasps loudly and jumps on the bed beside her, his lanky frame quickly moving so that he's hovering over her. "Never! My hair is beautiful! I don't hear you complaining when you run your fingers through it or when your hands tangle in it when we kiss a certain way."
Aurelia giggles at his dramatic response. He's so cute. "I was joking! I do really like your hair. What color is it?"
Harry leans down a bit further and kisses her deeply, "Good. And it's like yours, only a little bit lighter."
Aurelia hums, she really likes it when he kisses her like that because he feels like it. "I bet it looks nice on you."
Harry kisses her again because her lips are addictive, "Yes, I would agree. Are you ready to get up yet, Miss Lazy?"
Aurelia smiles and runs her hands up and down his arms, "No, I'd like to stay here and kiss you for a while longer. Your lips are very inviting."
He's certainly not opposed to that, "Oh? Is Miss Aurelia asking me to 'sleep in' for another day?"
Aurelia laughs and nods even though, technically, she's asking him to stay in bed and make out with her. But she's positive that he gets the hint, "Yes, she is."
His soft lips meet hers once more, "I will happily accept that offer."
They stay in bed and kiss for longer than Aurelia planned on, but that's okay because the sun is still out and they still have time to do everything that she's planned for the day. Harry gets everything they need packed into the rental car and they're on the road in no time.
As they drive down unfamiliar roads to reach their destination Harry finds himself asking, "So, why the Redwoods? What called you to them?"
Aurelia stops humming along with the radio. She hasn't thought about that much herself. "I don't know, really. I think it's because of their natural strength and just how long they've sunk their roots into the soft dirt of the Earth to maintain their permanent place among all that continue the fight of survival."
Harry smiles and takes his eyes off the road briefly to look at her. The wind is sending her hair in every direction and her features are alight with joy as they near their destination. She's absolutely breathtaking.
"That makes perfect sense! Please tell me that our next destination doesn't involve camping, this tent business is quite taxing you know." He's hoping that maybe he can just convince her to sleep under the stars this time.
Camping has quickly become one of his least favorite things. Not because he doesn't like camping, but because he doesn't like setting up a tent to camp. It's ridiculously difficult and it always takes him forever.
Aurelia laughs loudly because his refusal to use instructions to set up a tent is hilarious. "It might, just because you complained! Read the instructions! It wouldn't take you so long if you just used your eyes! You still have your sight and it baffles me how you choose not to use it to your benefit."
Harry rolls his eyes and sighs playfully, "Would it make you happy if I read the instructions this time?"
Aurelia's struggling to contain her smile. She's actually managed to get it through his stubborn mind that instructions are incredibly helpful. "Yes, it would make me very happy."
Harry lets out a soft sigh and a smile tugs at the corners of his lips, "Alright, I will read the instructions this time for your sake."
"You know, you're much more attractive when you use common sense."
Harry raises an eyebrow and glances over at her again, "Really?"
Aurelia laughs loudly, "No, that was a lie. You're definitely more attractive when you're being a cute idiot."
Harry laughs with her as he pulls into a parking spot, "I heard the word cute, so I'm not even going to try to argue."
He kills the engine and jogs to the other side of the car to open her door and help her out, "Good. I can't wait to put my hands on one of those trees, to feel it's life force surging through my fingertips, the breath of hundreds of years filling its core. It's beautiful just to think about."
The way that she talks about things drives him crazy. It's like she has no idea that she's so poetic all the time. Harry kisses her cheek, "You will be very soon! You're so pretty."
Aurelia brushes as he takes her hand, "Do you just enjoy telling me that I'm pretty at random moments?"
Harry beams because that's exactly what he likes to do, "Yes, because you react much differently if you aren't expecting it. Plus, I mostly say it when it comes to mind."
Aurelia smiles and takes a seat on the bench that he led her to. "You're very sweet Harry. Try to get that tent up before the sun sinks on the horizon this time, yeah?"
Harry chuckles as he empties the trunk, "I will try my best. For your sake, the instructions will be used this time."
Aurelia hums and swings her feet as Harry gets everything set up. She feels bad that she can't do anything to help, but Harry's told her multiple times that it's really not a big deal. She still feels bad about him having to do everything though.
Much to her surprise, Harry gets everything set up and ready in only thirty minutes. "All done! And the sun is still shining! Are you ready for a little hike, love?"
Aurelia beams because she knows that he tries so hard to impress her even though he really doesn't have to, "Yes! But I can't find you. A little help, please?"
Harry mutters an 'oops' before walking over to her and taking her hand in his, their fingers lacing together like puzzle pieces. He smiles as he looks down at their hands, it looks like they were made for each other and he loves it.
"Sorry about that. Since we are surrounded, I'm going to find you the best tree that I can, so you can touch it." He pauses for a moment because something about what he's just said sounds very wrong, "Okay, that sounded really inappropriate, but you know that that's not what I meant."
Aurelia snickers because he's just given her the perfect opportunity to catch him off guard with a sexual joke. "I bet your tree is nice."
Harry chokes on his spit and Aurelia nearly shakes with laughter, "I really wish that I could see your expression right now."
Harry stares at her with wide eyes as he shakes his head and tries not to laugh, "I can't believe you just said that."
Aurelia continues to laugh as they continue their walk down a path that she can't see, "Don't lie to yourself. You know that I don't censor myself. Plus, I know you know the type of dream that I had the other night."
She's talking about the sex dream she had a few nights ago and he laughs a little nervously because he didn't know that she knew that he knew about the dream.
"I uh...yeah I did. You're right. Still, that was very...unexpected."
Aurelia walks closer to him because she feels like she's too far away. "I'm a very unpredictable person. You should know that by now."
Harry nods slightly because, damn it, she has a point. "Yeah, okay that's also very true. I'm not sure if I'm more afraid or flustered by your sexual side."
The answer to his statement is obvious and she grins, "Easy, flustered. You have these like...little panic attacks. It's like you expect me to just drop everything and have sex with you and it's really amusing."
"For the record, that is not what goes through my mind."
Aurelia hums, her smile now closed lipped, "Oh I know. You're just nervous because you don't want to push things and because I don't lead up to it, everything I do is always a surprise."
Harry looks at her curiously. She always seems to know the things that he doesn't say out loud and it amazes him. "Yes, actually. That's pretty spot on. How'd you know that?"
Aurelia playfully rolls her eyes, "Harry. I've been around you long enough to be able to read you like a book most of the time. I don't have to see you to pay attention to things. For instance, I know that you really want to show me how gentle and passionate you can be, how loved that you can make me feel besides what's in your heart, and I know that you're refraining because you want me to decide. Which isn't a bad thing at all, in fact, I admire that about you."
Harry smiles softly, "I really am an open book, aren't I?"
Aurelia laughs lightly, "Yes, you really are. But it really helps me, so I'm glad that you're not some complicated mystery that would take me years to unravel. For the record, I'd love for you to show me, just not yet, but eventually."
Harry laughs because she really doesn't need to specify for him and he thinks that it's adorable, "Eventually is alright with me. You already know, but I won't ever rush you."
With this comment, she decides to fluster him one more time, just for the fun of it. "So, is it?"
His eyebrows pull together in confusion, "Is it what?"
Aurelia doesn't have it in her to stop herself from laughing as she specifies, "Your tree, is it nice?"
This time he surprises her and manages to on up her at her own game, "You're just going to have to wait to find out."
Aurelia finds herself giggling, "Good answer. Will you start describing for me now, please?"
Harry leans down and kisses her cheek, "Thank you, and absolutely! The sun is peeking through the rows upon rows of trees like stained glass, every ray shines through at a different angle with a different level of intensity. The trees themselves loom above everything, seemingly even the sun itself. Their branches are thick and vibrant with green foliage leaking out from every branch in every direction. The path is pretty nice too, a nice, natural, trodden patch of space that's been worn over by hundreds and hundreds of people all over the world who have come to see this beautiful forest that's survived for millions of years. A true nature made marvel."
He's so good at describing things to her and Aurelia can't help but to beam, "Sounds wonderful. Did you find a tree yet? And please, dear God, don't say yours."
A loud and obnoxious laugh passes his lips at her comment. "Wasn't going to, sweetheart. Yes, I found one, it's just a little bit further up the path."
Aurelia's heart beats just that much faster at the sound of his laugh. Harry has a weird laugh, but she absolutely adores it. She loves his laugh because it's never the same, there's always something different about it depending on what he's laughing at. Basically, she tries to keep him laughing just as often as he tries to keep her happy.
"Okay, thank you again."
"You say thank you too much."
Aurelia shrugs her shoulders, "I can't help it. Nearly ninety-nine percent of the time I feel like I'm a helpless child."
Harry gives her hand a gentle squeeze, "Well, for future reference, you don't have to thank me. Everything that I do is for you and is done willingly and without a second thought."
Aurelia stops walking and forces Harry to stop with her. "You can't just say stuff like that without kissing me. Kiss, please!"
Harry chuckles lightly and places his hands on her waist as he pulls her closer, "Any specific way that you would like your kiss?"
Aurelia smiles up at him with her teeth skimming her bottom lip, "Just a good one, please."
Harry laughs and playfully rolls his eyes, "Just a good one, of course. As you wish."
His nose tickles hers as he leans down and Aurelia giggles as his gentle lips brush against hers, her top lip wonderfully encased by his only seconds later. His kisses are heaven on earth.
She's grinning as he pulls away. "Perfect. Now, lead me to that tree!"
Harry laughs and takes her hand again, only to walk her a few steps up the path to a tree that's trunk is slightly larger than the ones that he's seen so far.
"Here's your tree! Just put your hand out and work your magic."
Aurelia grins and does exactly that, her hands delicately skimming over the ancient bark and absorbing the life that continues to thrive beneath the surface. She wonders how deep its roots went and figures that it's probably further than she could ever fathom.
"Absolutely magnificent..."
Harry gives her a few more minutes before he lets her know that the sun is setting and that they should probably start heading back.
Aurelia's seen all that she needs to see and takes his hand happily, "Can you make s'mores again? I like it when your lips taste like chocolate and marshmallow."
She looks so animated and so alive that he's almost completely forgotten about her brain tumor, "Absolutely."
