Chapter 10
We moved to another house in the city of Copenhagen. Well, not in the middle of it, and apparently according to Frej, that meant we weren't really in Copenhagen at all. Suburbs didn't count. That was a whole discussion I didn't feel like getting into.
But we did get a nice house by the sea and we could see over to Sweden when the weather was clear. Big boats sailed between the two islands and I liked sitting in the massive windowsill, watching them.
And that's where Dawid found me. Sitting in one of the small living rooms, legs tucked up to my chest and my arms wrapped around them, watching the lights across the pond.
He sat down on the other side of the windowsill, leaning against the wall behind him. He smiled softly at me and I smiled back.
"My turn to ask questions," he said and tipped his head to the side.
"Ask me anything," I said. I guess it was only fair.
"How come you didn't have anyone when you were alive?"
I sighed deeply and shifted my eyes to the water again. "I'm shy and... I generally don't hang out with people long enough to get to a point where I'm not shy anymore."
"How come?"
I shrugged a little. "Most people make me uncomfortable. I always think people don't like me and find me annoying so I'd cut them off before it got to that point. Being around people is just... Effort. Or it used to be. I think I'm getting better at it."
"I don't find you annoying. I like you," he said and then the top of his ears turned fire truck red. "Uh... What I meant was, you're not annoying."
I couldn't help but smile. My stomach was filled with butterflies and I just couldn't wipe away that smile.
Neither of us said anything for a while. We both just sat there and watched the pretty lights. It was nice. The silence wasn't awkward, it just felt natural and relaxed. Even despite Dawid saying, he liked me. I knew what he meant. It was just platonic and he was trying to be nice. I guess. And I appreciated his words. It was so nice being liked for a change.
"Tec wants to take us all out tonight," Dawid said finally, disturbing the silence.
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah. He thinks we need to let off some steam. Not to mention this is his favourite place. He always takes us there when we're here."
"Sounds nice. I'd like to get out a bit, I think."
"You haven't been out since that night, so I can imagine. It's a pretty relaxed bar thing. It's not really a bar... It's hard to explain. But Iwo loves the music there."
I bit down on my lip, to not ask another stupid question.
"You can ask," Dawid laughed. Was I that transparent?
"Can you hear music?"
"I can feel the bass. I like to just take out the hearing aids sometimes and then feel it." He leaned his head against the glass and smiled fully.
He had a cute smile and his grey eyes got this shine to them. My heart melted with a smile like that.
"I'm sorry I keep asking all these questions."
"Don't. You're not trying to be disrespectful. You're just curious. It's okay to be curious. I'm curious about you too. Like... How do you comb your hair?"
I burst out laughing and smoothed my hair down a bit. "I have a wide-toothed comb and it has to be wet. Otherwise, it's just impossible to even just get my fingers through."
Dawid smiled and shook his head. "Sound tedious."
"It's fine. I've done it all my life, so I'm used to it." I shrugged a little.
"How long is it if you straighten it?"
I took a curl between my fingers and pulled on it, stretching it out.
"That's really long."
"Yeah, I guess. I could probably use a haircut, but I kind of like it this long, you know? Makes me feel like a mermaid." I laughed and let go of my hair, the curl immediately bouncing back.
"I like your hair too. The way it bounces when you walk."
I raised my eyebrows at him. He didn't look like he regretted giving me that compliment. I ran a hand through my hair and looked back out the window.
Okay, so maybe I'm not the best at getting compliments. Sue me.
After having Kissy help me with some clothes and make-up, and generally just having a nice time pampering ourselves for a little while, we went to Tec's favourite place on earth, as he described it.
It was in a not so nice area of Copenhagen, every surface covered in graffiti and it was called something completely unpronounceable.
We found a table in the small bar that only played jazz music. And it was a live band too. It was a fantastic venue, really. Coloured lights lit up the place alongside candles on every table. The bar was beautifully decorated with LP covers from different inspirational jazz musicians throughout time.
Tec got us all drinks and we sat around a table, talking about nothing. It was such a relaxed environment so I could definitely understand how this had won over Tec's favour.
It was also my first time out amongst humans so it was interesting. We had all fed before we left, so I didn't feel particularly interested in them. At all. They simply didn't interest me. I was a lot more interested in hearing Iwo and Dawid tell me about their favourite dishes from Poland, or Kissy telling me she'd teach me how to get nice beach curls.
Later in the night, I caught myself watching Tec and Frej dance. I thought they were about the same height, which was very tall, but now I noticed Frej was a tiny bit taller.
They both looked so serene as they were swaying together. Tec said something that made Frej smile. He cupped Tec's cheek and brought his mouth to his own.
Frej had his hands on Tec's shoulders while Tec was holding on to Frej's waist and they just looked so good together. Happy. It was a nice change to see them both actually just enjoy themselves instead of fighting.
"When they're good, they're the best," Kissy said and nodded towards the couple.
"I'm embarrassed to say I'm a little jealous," I said and took a sip of my drink.
Kissy nodded. "Who wouldn't be? I mean, we know how much they fight, but I can see how it's worth it when they can be like that too." She sighed a bit. "I'm never going to get that."
"Who says you can't get something like that?" Iwo asked.
"All the men I know are idiots and all the women I know are bitches."
We all frowned at her.
"Goes without saying, I don't consider you guys dating options. You're family and therefore not idiots or bitches." She smiled brightly and Iwo clenched his jaw. He muttered something about going to the loo and then disappeared.
I seemed to be the only one who noticed how he had reacted to Kissy's word because she and Dawid were now joking about something I didn't really catch. I was more focused on Iwo and his apparent crush on Kissy. I couldn't believe I hadn't seen it before. It was obvious. He kind of followed her like a lovestruck puppy. I mean, I could totally understand him. If I had been into women, Kissy had been my first choice too.
She was amazingly sweet and caring. Beautiful. Funny and smart. She was everything I wish I was, really, because she was so confident but still had been nothing but kind to me. She could've easily been one of those mean girls from school. She kind of looked like them too, but I guess you really can't judge a book by it's cover. Because Kissy was anything but a mean girl. I wish I had known her when I went to school.
I rose to go to the loo myself but was stopped by Iwo on the way. He had parked himself by the bar and motioned me over to him.
"You know..." he said hesitantly and looked back at our table. "I know."
"You know what?" I asked and frowned a bit.
"I know you have the hots for my brother."
Uhm...
"He's not going to give you what you want, you know. He's not like that. He doesn't love like other people. He's not affectionate. Whatever you're looking for, he's not the one who's going to give it to you." Iwo sighed deeply and looked me straight in the eye. "Please don't toy with him. He's strong as hell when it comes to anything but girls, okay?"
"I don't know what you think, I want but-"
"He doesn't sleep with people, Aura. He's not into it, okay? So you're not going to get that from him. Please, just don't lead him on."
I didn't even know what to say. Mostly because Iwo had no idea of what I wanted or didn't want. And what he had just said, didn't frighten me. Quite the opposite.
