TheGentleman is known to be a very formal person and wants to look neat in any situation. The last thing to go is his looks.

I'm tired of wanting more

TheGentleman is tired of holding himself to such high standards and the standards his father has put on him.

For you have a way of promising things

TheGentleman's father was known to push fun things to the side, which probably includes promises of said fun things. He was probably lied a lot to by his father because to his father, all that matters is work.

And I've been a forest fire

TheGentleman has been known to be destructive to others, such as Mr. Cheese. But he is working on controlling the fire.

I am a forest fire

TheGentleman admits he has a problem and has been shown to be working on it.

And I am the fire and I am the forest
And I am a witness watching it

TheGentleman is probably self destructive as well as his destruction towards others. Yet, he watches himself be hurt and hurting others.

I stand in a valley watching it
And you are not there at all

TheGentlemans father was shown to be not around much and stuck in hus duties. He was known to reject TheGentleman's want for fun.

So today I will wear my white button-down
I can at least be neat

In the end, TheGentleman uses his clean and neat persona as a coping mechanism and puts on a show. After all, he is a gentleman.

TheGentleman seems to he the type to overwork himself. He's serious but learning to let go.

In the end, I would predict that TheGentleman would actually enjoy being neat and finally stop treating it like an obligation. He would learn to have fun. As seen in the episode where he and Mr. Cheese chase each other with towels, this is already starting to happen.
