20: Prom Night

"Can't be a coincidence." Betty says. I sit on Archie's lap, the five of us all talking. "He asked for the transfer, and then his bus just burst into flames? He planned it. He used me to escape, and now he's out there."

"Betty, I was with you." Veronica says. "I saw what was left of the bus. Nobody could've survived that."

Betty throws her head back. "Yeah, but if he did-"

"If he did, you've got me, you have the Serpents, you have Archie and his fight-club buddies." Says Jughead.

I nod. "You have a veritable armada here to protect you." I add.

"Also, you can move back in with my dad and I. It's been a lot quieter since my moms been gone."

We then have small talk about the Gargoyle King drama, when Cheryl comes in.

"Sorry to interrupt your no doubt thrilling catch-up, chums," Cheryl smiles at me kindly, the rest not so much. "But, as you know, junior prom is this weekend. The theme is Fire and Ice, and naturally, Toni and I are campaigning to be the most captivating prom queens this schools ever seen. So it goes without saying, vote Choni for co-monarchs because, when you really think about it, no other options make sense." Is all she says before spinning on her heel.

Veronica furrows her brows. "Prom is this weekend?" She asks. "We still do thinks like that here?"

"I mean, apparently." Betty says before cheekily asking Jughead to prom.

I knock on the Andrews door, and Mary opens it. "Emmy! So good to see you." She coos, hugging me tightly. "You're looking much more happy than you did last time we saw each other."

I shrug. "Well, we were dealing with Archie going to jail, as well as me hiding a baby." I laugh.

"Tori! Oh the sweet thing!" Mary awes at the baby in the stroller. "You can put her in the playpen in the living room, and come up with me to give Archie his food."

I oblige, and follow the mother up the stairs. "Hey, peanut butter and banana with an Emmy on top." She laughs. "Thought you might be hungry, ready for a break." She coos.

Archie nods, hugging me with one arm as he takes the plate. "Definitely." He chuckles. "Actually, Mom, I wanted to ask you something."

"Uh oh." I tease.

"There's a tournament this weekend that I want to box in, the Regional Classic. I just need you to sign my application to let me compete."

"Archie..." Mary sighs.

"Let me guess. You don't want me to box."

She laughs. "I didn't even want you to play football. And boxing is so much more brutal."

"I'm behind on everything else, but I'm good at boxing." Archie explains. "I was actually thinking about going pro."

"Going pro?" Mary repeats. "Archie, I know you've been dealing with a lot lately, but I won't support you getting pummeled." Is all she says before walking away.

I sprawl on his bed, sighing. "Oh, Archiekins."

He gives a goofy grin before sprawling on top of me. I let out a grunt, laughing uncontrollably. "What? Am I too much weight for your small fragile body to hold?" He teases.

"Yes, you sack of meat." I retort, smacking his back. "Get off of me." I push him off as he laughs, his lips touching my forehead softly.

I pick Jughead up at his house. "So, what'd you call me for?" I ask. He had told me about what happened with Ricky and Jellybean, and honestly the two of us weren't sure what to do.

"We, are going to Junkyard Steve's." He sighs.

"What's there?" I ask.

Jughead throws his bag in the back. "I guess we will find out." He says.

When we get the the junkyard, FP leads us to an old school bus. "This. Is. Disgusting." I grunt. "I'm so happy I didn't wear my Louis's."

We approach the bus, stepping inside. My eyebrows raise as I see the amount of wooden figures, much like the one Ethel made for Ben at the beginning of the school year. Runic symbols covering the walls. "Since this is where Kurtz brought you and where he was killed by the Gargoyle King, me and my men have been doing a sweep of the junkyard." FP explains. "It led us to this bus."

"Looks like this is where Kurtz and some other Gargoyles were crashing." Jug mumbles.

I sigh, plopping into a seat. I hit a rather hard object, causing me to shout in surprise and slight pain. "I didn't know bus seats were THAT hard."

Jughead pulls me out of the seat, and we notice a sloppily cut hole. Jughead pulls it open, revealing a book. My eyes widen, and I realize it's The Gospel for the Gargoyle King, which Jug had texted me about. I watch him slide it in his bag, putting his finger to his lips.

We get to school, and I stand at my locker when I hear my name called. "Emmy, hey." I turn around and I see Archie Andrews. He jogs over, handing me a piece of paper. "My mom signed."

I raise a confused brow. "Archie, last night she was most definitely not willing to sign." I hum.

He shrugs. "I'm very convincing." He chuckles.

I roll my eyes, shutting my locker and walking towards class. "So, uh, I was wondering," He looks down at his shoes. "What are you doing for prom?"

"Prom?" I repeat, a smile spreading across my face.

"Yeah, I thought maybe we could go together." He explains with a shrug.

I giggle. "Is this your way of asking me out on a date, Archie Andrews?" I tease.

Archie smiles. "We can go as friends, if you'd like."

I smile up at him. "I'd love to." I chirp. I kiss his cheek, his face reddening when we hear Toni shout about Prom tickets.

We walk up to the stand. "We'll actually take two, please."

Cheryl clicks her tongue. "My dear sister and the Red Paladin. I always liked you two better anyways." She hums. "Together or separate?" She asks blandly.

"Together." Archie says before I can even comprehend what happened. He pulls out his money, handing it to Cheryl.

"Don't forget to vote Choni for Prom Queens."

I shake my head. "I remember when you and I were gonna be Prom Queens, Cher." I chirp.

Cheryl sighs in content. "Yes, you and I prom queens and Jason as king."

"How was that gonna work?" Toni asks.

Cheryl shrugs. "Magic, I suppose." She looks back at me, smiling. "Next year you can have the crown, sister."

I giggle. "Wouldn't have it any other way."

Veronica and I walk into El Royale, seeing a working Archie. He's doing hardcore workouts, which causes us to frown. "I don't know if this is a cry for help or if you need to seriously refine your taste in athletic wear." Veronica says.

"I gotta lose weight for this fight Friday." Archie says.

"Archie, is that even enough time?" I ask, concerned.

"I'll do it." Archie replies. "Em, can you give me a ride back here after? I gotta focus in the car."

I tilt my head to the side. "Focus on what?" I ask.

"Another fight. My mom invited this recruiter to come see me box." He says.

Veronica looks at him, flabbergasted. "Archie, that's insane." She says. "You can't fight twice in the same day." (authors note: didn't be fight like 10 people earlier in the show though to get the Red Paladin card?)

I nod, agreeing with my sister. "Just invite your mom and the recruiter to the tournament."

Archie stops, walking over. "That's the thing. My mom didn't sign the waiver, I did. I forged her signature. She doesn't want me to fight in this tournament, so much so that she brought this recruiter all the way from Annapolis."

"So you've got to give her a good show." Veronica says. "We will make sure you get back here in time."

I nod. "How about Ronnie goes with you to the tournament, and I will be here with them." I offer.

"Sure, Emmy." Archie says, pecking my cheek. "I'm gonna go get a drink." He tells us, walking away.

Veronica looks at me, grinning. "So, I heard some whisperings. Archie asked you to prom!" She squeals.

"He did." I laugh.

"When Jug told me, Sweet Pea over heard and punched a locker."

My eyes widen. "Wow."

V nods. "However I heard he wasn't even going to go, so I don't know his problem."

I shrug, sighing. "It's Sweet Pea. Nobody knows what's up with him."
