20.1: Prom Night
"When will he be here?" The recruit woman asks me.
I open and close my mouth a few times, unsure what to say. We had been waiting for almost half an hour, and everyone was becoming impatient. Suddenly, my phone rings. "That's them." I say. I walk into the next room, "Where the hell are you guys?" I hiss.
"Archie's beat up. Bad. He can't do the fight." Veronica says. "I'm walking in now, follow my lead."
I hang up, and the two of us walk into the room
on opposite sides. "Veronica, where's Archie?" Mary asks.
"Yeah, im going cold in here." Fangs snaps.
"Ms. Andrews, Counselor Rivers, I presume. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, but Archie is not gonna be able to make it."
"What? Why not?" Mary asks,
I step in. "He's feeling under the weather." I say.
"Since when? He was fine this morning."
"We think it's food poisoning." Veronica says.
I nod. "We'd love to reschedule."
Suddenly Archie walks in. "I can fight."
"Archie, are you crazy?" I say. I notice his disconnection. He wasn't okay.
"I'm fine." He says to me. He kisses my forehead, "Fangs, you ready?"
Fangs says yes, and Archie crawls into the ring. He trips on one of the ropes. And he's down. Veronica and I explain what really happened, before leaving.
"This was a major fail." Veronica says as we walk out.
I sigh. "Yeah. It was." I reply.
"Emmy! You ready?" Archie calls from the living room. I had refused to let him see my dress, as it was as extra as it can get.
I slowly step out of my room, Archie's eyes widening in surprise. "It's not very renaissance, but on such short notice-"
"It's beautiful." He breathes. He walks over, his lips touching mine. "Fit for a Princess."
I smile, looking up at him. "Lead the way, Red Paladin."
At Prom, we meet up with Betty and Jug. "We talked to Peaches at the voting booth. She said you and I are tied for prom queen."
I furrow my brow. "What? I didn't even campaign."
"We think it's Cheryl, as she can't run so she's having you run." Betty explains.
"Luckily, Ms. Bell already agreed on having you both be Prom Queens together."
"Meaning mission catch Gargoyle King is still a go." I say, nodding.
Jughead looks between me and Archie. "So, are you two..."
"Yet to be decided." Archie laughs. He looks at me. "Want to dance?"
I smile. "I'd love to." I chirp.
(we will ignore the veronica and archie dancing scene, she tells archie ab the hiram stuff later)
"Princess Emilia Blossom. The name suits you." Betty says as we stand at the punch table.
I laugh, shaking my head. "Tonight we will be Queen Betty and Queen Emilia." I chirp.
"Eleven year old us would be screaming." She hums.
"Are you the Gryphon Queen?" A man dressed as a jester says to Betty. "This is for you, and your friend." He hands Betty a more.
"Where did you get this?" I ask him.
He looks at us. "I got it from a Druid, who got it from a Centaur, who got it from someone else." He explains. Betty opens the letter as he walks away.
To Her Majesty, the Gryphon Queen, and the Sorceress of Eldervair
I snort. "Sorceress of the Eldervair? Could this King be anymore pathetic." I mumble.
You've been summoned to the place where the first Ascension Night was held. Come alone. Tell anyone, and every reveler attending the festival tonight will pay the price.
We look around. Veronica and Archie are having a conversation on the side, Jughead standing in the crowd. "We have to go." Betty says, grabbing my hand. We swiftly walk away from the gym, heading down the dark empty halls.
The lights are dim, the only sound being our shoes. "Why are we doing this? Why do we get ourselves dragged into these messes? Why can't we just be normal?" I hiss. Betty points to the doors, causing me to realize they're chained. We approach the girls bathroom, where the first Ascension Night was held.
We open the door, a gasp escaping my lips. The walls are covered in red.
FLIP FOR YOUR FATE
FLIP FOR YOUR FATE
FLIP FOR YOUR FATE
Runic symbols lap with the message. "This is exactly what my mom saw that night." Betty whispers. The messages cover the mirrors.
"Kimberly too." I say under my breath. "She's alive, by the way."
Betty looks over, wide eyed. "What?"
I nod. "She was back in Riverdale. I don't know much else." I mutter. "She goes by Bethany now." Betty's eyebrows raise in surprise, but I wave her off.
We approach the sinks, where the two glasses lay. One with a Gryphon, one with a Gargoyle.
"Not gonna happen." Betty mumbles.
Suddenly, the lights go out, and turn red. I peek under the stalls, to make sure nobody's hiding, before walking out. Betty looks to her left, elbowing my side. I look up, and there he is.
The Gargoyle King.
I bite my lip, looking at Betty. She steps forward. "We did what you asked. We came here alone." She says. We grip each other's hands, stepping towards the king. There's a low growl coming from him.
"What do you want!?" I shout. He tilts his head to the side, and I watch Betty pull out a gun.
She directs it right at him. "Who are you!?" She shouts. Suddenly the two of us are shoved into each other, then a door.
We look up to see The Black Hood.
Aka; Hal Cooper.
Missing a hand, might I add. Instead there's a hook.
A very sharp one.
"Great. Two serial killers. Love that." I mumble. Betty kicks at her fathers leg, and we scramble to our feet.
"Shit. Shit. Shit." I scream. "Run!"
We rush into the Blue and Gold, slapping the door. I face the door, looking out the window. "Betty, we need to lock this door." I plead.
"Emmy," Betty says, her voice panicked. I turn around, a scream escaping my lips when I see a dead girl on the ground. We jump when Hal starts banging on the door. "Dad? Why are you doing this?" She cries.
She pushes me back, and we let him in. He flings me to the side, going after Betty.
"Dad, you don't want to do this." She screams.
His hand wraps around her neck as I scramble to my feet. I grab a lamp, throwing it at his skull. He stumbles back, and I grab Betty's hand. We run through Riverdale High, grabbing onto the doors. "Somebody help!" Betty screams. We start running again, trying to find a place to hide. We hear the screech of Hal Cooper's hook dragging across the lockers.
We run into the bathroom, looking in each stall. "Oh my god." I say when we see another corpse.
"Let's go." She cries.
We both grab hockey sticks, waiting for Hal to approach. When he does, we hit him at the same time. He grabs on to me, and tosses me into a basket. I push it between us, Betty and I sprinting away. We run to the closet under the stairs. The same closet Principal Featherhead was found in. We hold each other tightly, holding our breaths. Betty pulls out her phone, dialing 911. We both bump into something, turning around.
A headless body.
We let out loud screams in shock when we hear a loud banging on the door. Hal opens the door, and Betty and I pull back. We scream and grunt, slamming the door shut. We hold the door and each other, sobbing. This is how we were going to die.
Then there's silence.
The only sound is our panting. We look at each other, our faces tear stained.
We hear a knock and we suck in a breath.
"Betty? Emmy? It's Jug."
We open the door, our arms wrapping around Jughead. We sob into his chest. "Did you see him? Did you see him?" Betty asks.
Archie rushes over, pulling me into his arms. "Who? The Gargoyle King?" Jug asks.
"No!" I screech, sobbing.
"The Black Hood. The Black Hood is back, Jug." Betty cries.
Betty and I sit side by side, wrapped in blankets as Archie and Jug stands with us, FP shutting the door.
"It was a setup, Jug." She sighs.
"The Gospel that we found, and the Proclamation, it was to get us alone with Hal again." I sigh.
Jughead shakes his head. "I can't believe none of us saw it coming, the return of the Black Hood."
"Now we have two serial killers running around." Archie says.
"Possibly working together." Betty adds.
FP sits forward. "And both of them outsmarting us."
