Chapter 24-Audrey
By the time we pull up to Jake's cabin, the sun has long surrendered to the encroaching storm. The wind, now icy and relentless, howls through the trees, whipping branches chaotically. In the distance, there's a low rumble, followed by flashes of yellow in the night sky. A heavy storm, a brooding presence, claims Lakeview Hollow.
Droplets of rain tap softly on the truck's roof and windshield. Aislinn and I hastily grab our bags, futilely using them as shields against the impending rain. The cabin beckons as a sanctuary.
We swing the doors open, leap out, and slam them shut behind us, racing for the cabin's protective awning. Jake grins at our misfortune, joins our dash through the rain.
Under the awning, shivering, I watch as Jake inserts the key into the cabin door. Finally, warmth awaits us.
"Honey, why don't you go get showered and change into something warm while we start the fire?" I suggest to Aislinn. She nods without protest, disappearing into the cabin.
With Aislinn occupied, Jake and I find a rare moment of privacy. I huddle close to the fireplace as Jake coaxes life back into the embers. Flames flicker, casting a comforting glow on the stone.
Standing from his crouched position, Jake asks, "Better?" I nod, still rubbing my upper arms for warmth. His smile warms me as much as the fire does. Pulling me into a sweet embrace, he holds me close. My head nestles into a comfortable spot on his chest, and I feel the quickening rhythm of his heart, a steady beat amid the storm outside.
"So much for date night," I mumble into his chest, disappointment lingering in the aftermath of my words.
"Swimming, perhaps?" he retorts comically.
"Ha, funny guy," I reply, raising my face to his to let him see my raised eyebrows.
"Well," he says, tucking a loose hair behind my ear. "We could order in and watch one of those rom coms you love so much."
"Sounds perfect."
Standing on my toes, I lift myself to reach his lips. The brown, orange and grey stubble on his face is rough beneath my fingers as I caress him. My eyes flick up to his, and with a brisk motion, I throw a quick peck on his lips before letting my heels fall once more.
A smirk forms on his lips, and he leans in, embracing me once more. This time, his kiss holds a deeper sentiment. This guy!
"Why don't you order something while I send these pictures to Olivia? Then we can choose a movie together," I suggest.
"Anything particular you want to eat?" he inquires.
"Nah, Ais and I like everything," I reply, shaking my head.
"Of course, you do," he chuckles. "And let me know what Olivia says about the project."
I linger in the small, cozy lounge room as Jake heads to his kitchen to order dinner. Retrieving my phone from the bag, its battery still at thirty percent, I tap out my message on the screen.
"Hey Liv, you won't believe it, but we found the mansion. It's amazing! Got some pics for you. You might want to use it for your work project. Miss you xo."
Attaching the photos to the message, I hit send. The anticipation remains as my phone sits on the coffee table, awaiting her reply. The sketchy cell service up here makes me brace for a delay. Settling onto the comfortable couch, I ponder the adventures of the day.
Jake finishes ordering dinner, and when he returns, he's wearing a self-satisfied grin like he's just conquered the world. I can't help but smile as he settles onto the couch next to me, his arm wrapping around me. We're snug, and it feels good.
"You know," he teases, a playful glint in his eyes, "I was thinking about a horror movie, something to get those nerves going."
I roll my eyes. "We've had enough adventure for today, don't you think?"
"Fair point."
Aislinn steps out from the hallway, fresh from the shower, wearing her comfy PJs. Her hair is still damp, but she looks relaxed. She joins us on the couch, and it's a trio of warmth and comfort.
Jake, ever the charmer, winks at Aislinn. "You clean up nice, Ais."
She laughs as she pulls twigs from her hair. "Thanks, Jake. But the wilderness isn't as forgiving on hairstyles as it is on beards."
We all share a laugh. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the simplicity of camaraderie.
With dinner on the way, the conversation shifts to the crucial decision of what movie to watch. We gather around the remote, supervising Jake's choices as he scrolls through Netflix.
"How about a classic rom com?" Aislinn suggests, a mischievous grin on her face.
Jake feigns a gasp. "Aislinn, not another one of those tear-jerkers!"
She smirks. "Come on, Jake, you secretly love them."
He shrugs, "Maybe just a little."
I chime in, "How about that one with the quirky meet-cute and the inevitable grand gesture at the end?"
Aislinn nods, "Perfect! The one with the quirky guy and the girl who hates clichés."
Banter continues to fill the room as we settle on the movie. These moments, the teasing, and the shared decisions, feel like a welcome break from the day's challenges.
The movie starts, and just as we're getting into it, there's a knock on the door. Jake springs up with a grin. "Food's here!"
He exchanges pleasantries with the local UberEATS driver, a familiar face in Lakeview Hollow. The door closes, and he returns with bags of burgers, chips, and sodas. I should have guessed this would be his choice. Lucky Ais and I have a penchant for old school comfort food, too.
Dinner is a casual affair, the food delicious and the atmosphere light. Between bites, I steal glances at Aislinn. She's genuinely enjoying herself, and it warms my heart. Jake's easy-going nature has brought a sense of ease, a welcome change.
As the movie wraps up, the credits rolling, I find a muted moment to reflect. Surrounded by the warmth of the cabin, the laughter of my daughter and, um, boyfriend (I guess - it feels so weird to call him that), and the afterglow of a satisfying meal, a sense of contentment settles over me. Lakeview Hollow, with its charm and familiar faces, is starting to feel like home.
A soft ping draws my attention to the coffee table. I grab the phone to see Olivia's response illuminating the screen.
"I can't believe you guys actually found it. Crazy! Looks amazing but needs a bit of work. Will talk to my boss and see what he wants to do. Enjoy your weekend with lover-boy."
A smirk creeps onto my lips, courtesy of her parting shot - 'lover-boy.' Despite her corporate demeanour in towering heels and sharp pant suits, Olivia has a whimsical side that never fails to amuse me. It's a quality I've found endearing throughout the years.
Jake shot me a sidelong glance, a teasing smirk playing on his lips. "Loverboy, huh?"
I playfully swatted his arm. "Are you peering over my shoulder?"
"I didn't mean to. It just caught my eye on the screen," he admits, a sheepish grin tugging at his features.
"I know. I'm just teasing. Relax, buddy," I reassure him with a light giggle.
Jake draws nearer, his eyes locking onto mine. The air shifts from playful banter to an intensity that commands my attention. As he leans in, I'm captivated by the emotions reflected in his eyes, a flicker of something more profound. His warm breath brushes against my lips, leaving me to ponder the mystery of his thoughts. Is he savouring every second until our lips finally unite? The uncertainty hangs in the charged air. I melt into his romantic gesture as he kisses me softly.
"Ugh, seriously?" Aislinn wrinkles her nose in mock disgust. "I'm out. Bedtime. Night."
Our cozy embrace dissolves, and I shift my focus to her retreating figure. "Sweet dreams, sweetheart." She mumbles something indistinct as she departs, and the click of the door's lock seals her exit.
Turning to Jake, I say, "Looks like she's locked me out. Got a key to the guestroom handy?"
A mischievous smirk graces his lips. "Sorry, no key."
"Well, it looks like the couch will be my bed for the night," I say in defeat.
Jake smirks. "No way. I can't let you take the couch. I'll crash there; you take the bed."
I playfully roll my eyes. "Come on, Jake, we're not diving into the 'who's the bigger saint' debate. I've got the couch covered."
He raises an eyebrow, a challenge in his gaze. "You know I won't budge on this."
I fold my arms, mirroring his determination. "Neither will I."
There's a moment of silent standoff, before Jake relents with a sigh. "Alright, but only if you promise to let me make it up to you with breakfast in the morning."
"Deal. But I'm holding you to that."
As Jake heads to the living room with a spare blanket, a pang of guilt settles in my stomach. I feel like I've just displaced him. Which I have! When he calls from the living room, "All set here. You comfortable?"
"Yeah, thanks, Jake," I reply, though my conscience nags at me.
As I settle into the bed's inviting softness, I can't shake the sense of wrongness. I call out to Jake, "You know, you really didn't have to take the couch."
His voice floats back, teasing. "It's settled. I'll live. Sleep tight, Audrey."
But the guilt persists. An idea takes root, and I call out to him once more. "Hey, Jake, what if we both take the bed? It's big enough, and we can keep it PG, I promise."
"PG, huh? Are you sure you can handle it?" He chuckles, but I can hear him moving about in the lounge room. I wonder how long he had to 'think' about my offer before jumping to his feet?
"I'm not the one who's going to struggle with self-control, Mr. Charmer," I retort.
After a brief bickering session, we share the bed, and as we settle in, side by side, I can't ignore the electric charge in the air. We both lay there, staring at the ceiling, sensing the unspoken tension. I remind myself, "Okay, Audrey, PG. No crossing lines."
But as the minutes pass, I wish Jake wasn't such a gentleman. His proximity is both comforting and unnerving, a challenge to my self-control. Closing my eyes, I vow to myself that tonight, I won't let the line blur.
A tranquil quietude envelops the cabin, punctuated only by the intermittent pattering of raindrops on the windowpane. The storm has calmed down now to a steady rhythm of drizzle. Lying side by side with Jake, the space between us feels electric. His steady breathing becomes a rhythmic backdrop to my internal struggle.
Closing my eyes, I attempt to calm the flutter of nerves within me. I whisper internally as I reiterate my resolve again - tonight, no blurred lines, no crossing boundaries. But Jake's nearness, the warmth radiating from him, challenges my determination.
In the dim glow of the room, I steal a glance at him. He's lost in his thoughts, his eyes fixed on the ceiling still. The soft light highlights the contours of his face, and for a moment, I'm caught in the sheer vulnerability of the situation.
As my mind battles the allure of what-ifs, I remind myself of the promise I made earlier (and keep reminding myself). Keep it PG. No matter how tempting it may be to let the boundaries blur, I can't afford to jeopardize our budding relationship.
The minutes tick by, each one carrying its weight of both restraint and curiosity. The subtle pull between us is undeniable, a magnetic force that beckons with both caution and desire.
"Okay, Audrey," I whisper to myself, steeling my resolve. "You've got this. Stay on your side of the bed." It's becoming more difficult to hold it together, to keep my hands to myself, despite the constant reminders.
Despite my pep talk, I wished that, just for tonight, Jake wasn't the consummate gentleman. The sexual tension in the air testifies to the uncharted waters we're navigating together. For now, we tread lightly, keeping it PG until both of us are ready to take the next step.
As I marvel at Jake's wonderful nature, my thoughts overflow with emotion. I can't believe how fortunate I am to have crossed paths with this extraordinary man. His profile possesses a captivating charm. I contemplate how handsome he is, both on the outside and on the inside. It's a rare combination that makes my heart swell with appreciation.
I wonder what he's thinking as his eyes remain fixed on the ceiling. Is he navigating the same maze of emotions that I am? Or is his mind a tranquil sea, untouched by the ripples of anxiety that mine is experiencing?
As still as a log, I keep my arms by my side, not wanting to disturb the delicate balance of this moment. The silence is interrupted by the sudden, unexpected touch of Jake's hand as it gently clasps mine, intertwining our fingers. His touch brings comfort and a sense of security.
Gratitude overwhelms me in this simple gesture. I'm grateful for this connection, for the way Jake's presence speaks volumes without saying a word. As my emotions intensify, a warm sensation spreads through my chest, and I contemplate whether I am actually falling in love.
Yet, as quickly as warmth blooms, a shadow of worry creeps in. Anxiety races through my mind like wildfire. What if Jake gets bored with me? What if I ruin the magic we've found? The fear of losing something so precious tightens my chest.
Amidst the whirlwind of doubts, a question nags. Do I honestly deserve someone as perfect as Jake? With his kindness, warmth, and that heart-melting smile. Doubt threatens to undermine the fragile relationship that's building.
As if Jake can feel the inner turmoil, he tenderly strokes my hand with his thumb, wordlessly assuring me that everything is okay. The gentle stroke calms my nerves better than any medication ever could.
Deciding to spare him the burden of my swirlingthoughts, I close my eyes and feign sleep. I sense Jake shift beside me, as thesoft rustle of movement shows his proximity. My heart skips a beat as he brusheshis lips against my forehead, followed by a whisper. "Sweet dreams, beautiful.Don't worry, we've got this." His words envelop me, silencing my doubts. Jake'spresence soothes me as I drift into sleep.
