Chapter 20-Aislinn

"O. M. G!" I gasp, utterly incredulous. Are my eyes deceiving me, or did my mum and Jake finally get their act together?

Surprised by my sudden entrance, they pivot toward me, guilt written all over Mum's rosy cheeks. It tells me everything I need to know!

"Well, well," I quip, my eyes rolling skyward as I saunter toward the kitchen counter in desperate need of a caffeine fix. "It's about time."

As I reach for the pitcher of coffee, my mind races to catch up with the unexpected scene unfolding in my home. The air crackles with a mix of surprise and awkwardness as Mum fumbles for words.

"Aislinn, sweetheart, it's not what you think," she stammers, her eyes darting nervously between Jake and me. But the blush on her face betrays her attempts at casual reassurance.

I arch an eyebrow, a smirk playing on my lips. "Isn't it? Because from where I stand, it looks like you two just discovered the secret to romance."

Jake, always the laid-back type, chuckles nervously. "Hey, Aislinn, we, uh, we didn't exactly plan this."

I shoot him a mock accusatory look. "Oh, so this is a spontaneous burst of passion, then? How very Hollywood of you."

Mum stands from her seat on Jake's lap and places a hand on her hip, attempting to regain control. "Aislinn, please don't be upset. It's just that life takes unexpected turns, and sometimes, well, sometimes you end up in surprising places."

I let out a laugh, a blend of disbelief and amusement. "Surprising places? Mum, the only surprise here is that it took you this long to figure out you like Jake."

They exchange glances, and for a moment, the tension gives way to shared laughter. I pour myself a cup of coffee, enjoying the rich aroma as it fills the room.

As Jake gathers his things to head back to Lakeview Hollow, I feel both relieved and curious. Mum walks him to the door, exchanging a few quiet words that I intentionally don't eavesdrop on. The air seems charged with unspoken emotions, but Jake eventually offers a casual wave before disappearing down the path.

Mum returns to the living room, her smile lingering for a moment before transforming into a wistful expression. Her eyes follow the trail Jake just took, and I sense a shift in the atmosphere.

"Everything alright, Mum?" I ask, my tone gentle.

She sighs, a mix of emotions dancing in her eyes. "It's just... it's been a while since things felt this way, you know? Easy."

I step closer, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Well, it's never too late for a fresh start. And who knows, maybe this is exactly what we all need."

Her eyes meet mine, filled with gratitude. "You have a way of making things sound like a ray of hope, especially when I'm filled with uncertainty."

"I learned from the best," I reply, giving her a playful nudge. "And hey, we'll see Jake again soon. This isn't goodbye, just 'til next time."

Her smile returns, more genuine this time. "You're right, Ais, 'til next time."

Wanting to lift the mood, I change the subject. "Speaking of strange things, Mum, have you noticed anything unusual around the house lately?"

Her eyebrows furrow. "Unusual? Like what?"

"Well," I start, trying to keep it casual, "I had a peculiar experience last night. Almost felt like a... presence, you know? Any weird vibes around here recently?"

Mum looks at me, a flicker of curiosity in her eyes. "A presence? Aislinn, are you sure you're not imagining things? You haven't been sleeping well. Or stress..."

I chuckle, deciding to play it cool. "Maybe, but seriously, have you sensed anything off?"

She pauses, contemplating the question, before shaking her head. "No, not really. Just the usual creaks and groans, I guess."

I let it go for now, not wanting to press the issue. But as I glance around the familiar living room, a shiver runs down my spine. There's something lingering in the air, something just beyond the reach of my understanding.

The air in the house is thick with the afterglow of Mum's happiness. Still, as I glance at the family portrait on the wall, images of the abandoned mansion at Lake Eldritch plague me, refusing to release its hold on my thoughts.

My mind drifts back to the mansion. Its ghostly corridors have become a puzzle, each dream and apparition a piece waiting to fall into place. There's a story there, woven into the very fabric of Lake Eldritch, and it's a tale I'm compelled to uncover.

Friday approaches like an unopened chapter, promising answers, or perhaps more questions. Mum and I plan to drive to Lakeview Hollow, where Jake awaits. Together, we'll a search for the mansion—our own quest for the supernatural.

As I consider our weekend plans, my thoughts veer toward school. Maddie, once a close friend, now treads on a fragile bridge of trust. The chaos has subsided, but the memories of that tumultuous time still resonate in our friendship. With cautious optimism, I hope for a resolution, a way to rebuild the bridge between us.

Then there are Ellie and Ben, the twins from Lakeview Hollow. Their presence is a reminder that the mysteries of that town extend beyond the mansion. Perhaps they'll be willing to join our pursuit, their familiarity with the woods and their penchant for secrets it might hold.

Olivia had also revealed a keen interest in the mansion, drawn to its mysterious allure. I remember her eagerness, her voice filled with excitement, as she declared herself a part of our journey. With that in mind, I turn to my mother.

"Mum," I begin, "Olivia wanted to join us in the mansion search, too. Think you could talk to her? Maybe convince her to join us this weekend?"

Mum nods, her eyes filled with understanding, acknowledging the importance of Olivia's perspective in our quest. With a determined expression, she sends a text message to Olivia, her fingers tapping on the screen. The phone's notification tone chimes, and we eagerly expect Olivia's response.

Yet, even as we plan, there's an undercurrent of uncertainty. The mansion's spectre, the ghostly puzzle that has haunted my dreams, lingers in the periphery of my thoughts. Each step toward Lakeview Hollow feels like another piece of the puzzle falling into place. What awaits us there, amid the shadows of the mansion and the mysteries of the forest, is a story yet to be written—a story that holds the answers I seek.

As Friday approaches, the atmosphere at school becomes filled with anticipation and unresolved tensions. Maddie and I are trying to salvage our friendship, but her betrayal keeps coming back to me. I can't stop thinking about that party, where she tested and ultimately broke my trust. I'm trying to work things out, but it feels easier to let it go; though I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet, either.

Among all the emotions, the twins, Ben, and Ellie is a welcomed distraction. Our connection has really grown since our last Lakeview Hollow adventure. We've stayed connected on social media, laughed together on video chats, and discovered we have more in common than just that weekend. I can't wait to see them in person on this trip. It'll be nice to have their company as we dive into the search.

Before Mum and I embark on our journey to Lakeview Hollow, our home transforms into a stage for a lively exchange. The living room is abuzz with our joint laughter and chatter as we pack everything we need for our weekend away.

"Ready for our first mystery adventure, Mum?" I tease, slinging my backpack over my shoulder.

Her grin is contagious, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Absolutely, my partner in the unknown. Let's hope the ghosts play nice." I'm fully aware she mentions ghosts half-heartedly. While she doubts the reality of it all, I make a conscious choice to not let her words add any strain to the situation.

During the car ride to Lakeview Hollow, laughter and friendly banter filled the air. This drive is a stark contrast to our first, filled with laughter and shared stories that reflect our growing bond as mother and daughter. Warmth rises within me at the thought of it, and I reflect on how much things have changed between us in such a short period. Mum practically dragged me there, kicking and screaming, but now it was my turn to convince her to go on this trip.

As we pull up to Lakeview Hollow, Jake greets us with a grin that holds more secrets than his words reveal. For a moment, I wonder what he's thinking before the thought escapes me.

The sight of his cabin, a rustic wooden retreat tucked away in the woods, is something special. It's a true bachelor pad with minimal decorations, a cozy lounge room with a wood-burning fireplace. With only two bedrooms, it promises an intimate setting for our weekend quest.

Returning to Lakeview Hollow unleashes a flurry of emotions. Excitement courses through me, as I realise that this town holds the answers to the supernatural occurrences plaguing me. Still, there is also hesitation at seeing the ghost again, and confronting the puzzle that ensnares him. Is it within my power to decipher the mysteries and release him? Or will we end the weekend empty-handed?

My mother, too, takes in the familiar surroundings. The cabin is rustic and charming. The reflection of Jake's contracting skills is markedly divergent from our experience at Maggie's B & B. I watch as her eyes meet Jake's.

"Welcome to my humble abode," Jake says, opening the cabin door for us.

Mum chuckles. "Why, thank you, kind sir," she chirps before changing the subject. "What plans have you devised for the weekend?"

While laying out the plan for our mansion search, Jake and I discuss the familiar terrain; the section of the woods where they found me. We agree to focus our efforts there, a decision rooted in the place's history. To explore Lakeview Hollow and Lake Eldritch, we'll divide into two groups for better coverage.

The eerie and tangled forest sets the stage for the mysterious horrors that lie hidden in its depths.
