"Get off of me, you slimy fuck." You whined, stumbling around under the weight of your many books, not to mention the king of negativity achieved to your back with many black, chilly tentacles.
"Hm... no. You're really warm, for a human, anyway." The skeleton mumbles into your back, nuzzling you slightly. It was almost intimate, the way he was hugging you. Although you didn't exactly understand his comment.
"All humans are warm, Nightmare." You sigh, dropping them into your bag and zipping them up. The entity of darkness seems surprised at your comment.
"They are?" He asks, and you can feel his raising an eyebrow. "Oh. I thought it was just you."
"Haven't you touched another human before? I'm sure I'm not the first human you've decided to haunt." You brush away a tentacle that's concerningly close to your neck, but it chooses to gently loop itself around your fingers and wrist before letting go. "The average human body temperature is around 98 degrees Fahrenheit."
"I did say I've touched a human body before," the king smirks, and you can feel his ribcage shudder with a soft chuckle. "But I never said it was a living one."
You shake with laughter and he laughs along with you. If any sane person out there were to hear your conversation, they would immediately think you were crazy and send you to some mental hospital. They would be right. Neither you or Nightmare have been completely sane for longer than you could remember.
"All humans may be warm, but I think I like fucking up your stuff the most," he says, swatting a pile of folded clothing on you bed with a stray tentacle. You scoff at him, rolling your eyes as you pick up the now crumpled clothes and stuff them into your suitcase anyway.
"Yeah yeah, you love chaos and stuff. Are you just going to lay there on my back until you turn to dust?"
"Correct." He buries his head into your shoulder and inhales your sent- it's crisp and minty. You flush a flattering shade of pink, but say nothing, going through the motions and putting away your belongings.
Monsters didn't exist in your world, so of course when you had first met him you had lost your shit. You were convinced that you were having a mental breakdown, but when he stuck around and kept fucking up your stuff, eating your snacks, and cuddling with you, you warmed up to him.
You had about half a foot of height on him- funny, considering you were larger than the supposed 'king of Nightmares', although you were aware he could easily kill you. He had already broken your arms once when slapped him for destroying all of your glass cups three years ago. Stars, has it already been 3 years? It feels like yesterday.
"Stop smelling me. I'm not wearing some expensive cologne." You sigh, which earns you another husky chuckle. Honestly, that's super hot; but you would rather not deal with this while packing up in the middle of the night to leave this universe, this stupid dead end job, and all of the terrible people here.
"I like you better when you don't wear it." He replies, blowing out some warm breath against your skin. "I don't think you humans can smell souls, but yours smells like mint."
Your soul had a smell? Is that why he kept smelling you? That made sense, because you normally smelled either like dirt and cement powder or cheap soap. Mint was a pretty nice smell.
"So what do you smell like?"
"I'm told I smell and taste like apple cider."
"Somebody's tasted you?"
"Yeah. Axe has bitten me more than a few times."
You take hold on one of his hands and take a deep breath- he does in fact smell like apple cider. It's nostalgic, reminding you of the times you had gone apple picking in the past.
You don't know this, but Nightmare flushes a bit at the action- but then settles down. His koala hug grows a little tighter- and he's so close to you and you were so warm. He takes one last deep breath before he lets his consciousness fade, breath rolling out in a purring rumble.
You could tell he had fallen asleep, and that made you smile. He wasn't the most trusting person. He even refused to show his back to you when you had first met him, so him falling asleep on you back and so vulnerable was a massive display of trust. It was his own way of saying he loved you.
"Love ya, dipshit." You coo affectionately as you lay down on your stomach on the bed. The purring slows for a moment, and your almost worried, before you hear a few mumbled words.
"Love you too, human."
You know he cares.
