What Is School?
(Y/N) would have been running like the wind if it wasn't for the fact that it would have caused even more attention to herself, but that couldn't damper the cheerful mood she was in, she was finally free to go, away from this mad town, these stuck ups and all this hellraiser talk, her heart was almost trying to leap out of her throat at this rate.
The name still sent a small sensation of excitement and pride pooling into her gut, it was like she was finally identifying herself for the first time, finally getting to know the little girl who emerged from those woods so long ago and made a home here with the others.
But another reason for her excitement, was that she was finally going to have her precious MP3 player in her hands again, she absolutely needed her tunes to drown out all the madness in their crackerjack mad form of order, though one thing did get in her way.
"Hey you! Stop right there!" The yell made (Y/N) stumble to a hault and force her eyes to go wide with dread, she immediately turned to face the direction she heard the gravelly voice in and struggled to keep herself from running at the sight of a large man, zooming towards her like one of the children during the tag games she would love to play with them, only this guy was much bigger and way older.
But she wasn't terrified, infact she was glaring at the man with so much aggression for interfering with her leave, and not knowing whether or not to choose flight or fight, or perhaps just see what the guy wanted but he already began yapping his mouth as soon as he cleared yelling distance, "did you really expect me to not notice a youth skipping school?" He growled with a puff of white smoke.
(Y/N) paused before beginning to sweat in nervousness, she was feeling dread fill her chest and tension form in her gut, the poor girl didn't understand a single thing he said, her mouth was dry and all she could manage to spit out was, "..what's..sch-ool?" She spelled out.
The silver haired man just stiffened his shoulders at the question and furrowed his brows in suspicion, "what? You trying to fein ignorance now brat?" (Y/N) felt her stomach form knots when the man began to emit a menacing aura, "I-I don't know what, you're saying" the man then drew back in suprise when he finally noticed her scar covered body.
"Oh...shit, you're an orphan aren't you?" He frustratingly rubbed the back of his head in what seemed to have been apology before roughly dragging her away by the arm, which greatly startled the (H/C) into tripping with every forced step, eyes the size of saucers, "w-what!? Where are you taking me!?" Feeling her instincts kick in from the adrenaline, (Y/N) immediately fought back and fiercely bit his gloved hand.
Not expecting the violent response, the man sprung back, allowing (Y/N) to regain her cool and turn around to flee, but was greatly disappointed when two familiarly gloved hands wrapped around her torso and picked her up from the ground, this immediately made her want to thrash in responce to kick him off, but she thought against it, glancing around her, a few passersby were already giving her strange looks of fear and horror, fighting back was making her too noticeable, so against all her intuitions, she allowed the man to haul her down the sidewalk.
"Jeez kid I'm not gonna hurt you, damn, sorry, you must have been badly abused to be this skittish" once again (Y/N) paused at the unfamiliar words before glancing down at her scarred shoulder, was he possibly talking about them? Are they what 'abused' meant? But whatever the case, she didn't have enough time to think ahout it once again when she was met with a familiar place.
(Y/N) felt as if someone shoved a ball of lead down her throat, suddenly she couldn't bring a single sound out of her mouth, the (H/C) could only feel dread numb her senses as the man dragged her through the gates of the marble palace.
Her worry only increased when they took an unfamiliar turn and she became unbelievably lost, unable to memorize the path with her brain caught up in chaos, as they twisted and turned through many corridors, (Y/N) let her mind drift off to find any possible escape plans when a shrill voice made her almost jump into the ceiling, "Smoker sir!" Both of them turned their heads to see a shorter woman in a perfectly white and blue uniform that had the words, 'police' stamped on the shoulders of her sleeves and back, with dark, rectangular glasses falling off the bridge of her nose.
"Tashigi, have you finished your paperwork already?" The woman now named as Tashigi, nodded as she rushed to catch up to him and frowned at the sight of the other girl, "oh sir, is that another class ditcher?" (Y/N) could hear the aggression in her tone at the name and concluded she wasn't very fond of these, 'class ditchers' but the Smoker man just gruffly shook his head, "no, I'm actually sure she's an orphan, or can't you see that from her appearance already?" He sarcastically growled, but not at all giving her any real hostile intent.
The Tashigi woman then gasped, seemingly just noticing the laceration scars that covered (Y/N)'s body, "oh my, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to act off as aggressive or hostile to you" the group of three then finally stopped at a door giving the woman a moment to bend over in apology, something the disheveled teen remembered seeing the D. brothers do all the time when they pissed someone off, "I-It's okay" she mumbled.
Then she was literally dragged back into reality, having been rushed through the door and into a new room, (Y/N) blinked at the bland grey walls and dark blue fuzzy floor, seeing a small table covered in thin sheets of flimsy things and strange dusty, scrunched up cylinders, the smell of something burning assaulted her nose, making her instantly try and hold her breath in between exhales as much as she could.
It wasn't long until she was led to a chair by the Tashigi woman and the Smoker man took a seat in the leathery chair in front of her, glancing at her scars from time to time while he pulled out a small stick like cylinder before setting it aflame and sticking it in his mouth with the other one, "okay kid, tell us about yourself" he blandly rumbled.
(Y/N) blinked in alarm at the demand before swallowing a thick gulp, "a-about myself?" Tashigi gave her a comforting rub on the back with a small, pitying smile on her lips, "we understand if it's hard for you to talk about it, whatever it was, it must be hard to relive your pain, but we need to know how educated you are in order to enroll you in a school, and we also need to know your personality so we can find a host family that you can get along with, and then there's the fact on finding your birth parents and putting them on trial for child abuse and negligence" she strung on and on.
All the big words confused her even more, but the outsider did understand one thing amongst the confusing babbling, they thought she was one of them in distress- kind of relieving to know some of them cared about each other, and she could use this to her advantage as long as she didn't slip up in her supposed story, "I-I well, I've, I've always been..alone, on the..streets..ever since I can remember...the scars..I've always had them, I just..." she then buried her face in her hands to make it seem that she was struggling, and resisted the urge to smirk in victory when the Smoker man loudly puffed out a cloud of smoke, "I guess we can't ask for any information you yourself don't have..Tashigi!" Smoker yelled.
The woman stood alert and awaited his instructions, "yes sir?" Smoker huffed one last time before mindfully peering at (Y/N) in thought, giving her a soft but somewhat suspicious stare, "I want you to ready the enrollment papers, we're taking her to the One Piece high school, I'll decide on what host family she'll stay with" she saluted before making a beeline out.
