Who Was I To You?
"What's happening?!" Allura raced into the med bay to find a full on war raging. Hunk was struggling to hold Y/N in his arms as she kicked and thrashed at Lance. Keith had a bloody nose, Pidge was attempting to reassemble grover, Matt was helping Shiro search for something, and Coran sat shaking beneath a table.
"Princess!" He called out. Allura ran over to him and snuck beneath the table.
"What is happening Coran?!"
"I tried to find a way to restore her memory, and then she just blew up! Tried to kill me! If it weren't from my—" Coran explained but was cut off by Allura.
"I found fathers journal about Zarkon. It explained how he takes away the memory and how to get them back. But, it will be nearly impossible." She sighed.
"GUYS SHE'S A LOT STRONGER THAN BEFORE!" Hunk whined.
"Hunk, keep hold!" Allura commanded. "Paladins, over here!"
Everyone raced over and ducked beneath the table.
"Someone wanna explain why she's gone all murderous on us?!" Keith sputtered.
"There is a failsafe in her mind to stop anyone from bringing her memories back. But, there is a way. Zarkon picked a phrase from her past which created a vivid, irreplaceable memory. Most likely something spoken by someone close to her. If anyone has any ideas, time to speak up." Allura explained.
Instictivley, everyone turned to Shiro, being her big brother and all. He seemed to be sifting thorough all of his memories and then his face lit up.
"Y/N! KAZOO OR KANGAROO?!" He yelled over the table, awaiting a resoinse. Nothing came at first but silence, which they thought was a good thing, but it was the opposite. She just looked even more angry.
"You're kidding." Keith threw his head into his hands. "Kazoo or kangaroo? That's not gonna be it!"
"AH! She bit me!" Hunk whimpered as he released the girl.
Matt lunged forwards and pummelled Y/N to the ground, struggling to hold her down. "C'mon guys! Someone has to have said something!"
"I freaking saved you from an evil, self-aware tree!" Pidge piped up, mocking Matt's voice from the day they had first met Y/N. That didn't work either.
"Teach me some of your ninja moves?" Lance winced as he said it. That probably wasn't it either. Sure enough, it wasn't.
"Y/N, here to stay, right?" Keith stared down at the girl, hoping for some change in her. Yet again, nothing.
"Guys, c'mon! I can't hold her much longer!" Matt pleaded. He could see the inferno in her eyes growing and he knew that once she broke free, there would be no stopping her.
"Uhhh— Orange! I like it!" Pidge shouted out but it did nothing but seem to fuel Y/N's strength even more. This failsafe must've gotten stronger each time someone tried to crack it open.
"Y/N! You have to fight it!" Matt used all of his remaining strength to push Y/N down, tears streaming down his face. "You're not forgetting any of us forever."
For a moment, Y/N seemed to stop fighting. Her eyes cleared.
"Matt! Keep going!" Pidge encouraged her brother. She'd seen the change too.
Matt made his biggest mistake in that moment, though. He looked to Pidge to ask her what to say, but Y/N saw her opportunity and flipped Matt over, her fist hovering over his face.
"Y/N—" He gasped. Slowly, he went to raise his hand but Y/N smacked it away.
She moved her arm to his throat and he coughed at the impact. Struggling against her force, he did all he could to lessen the pressure on his neck, trying to think of what one thing he or any of the other paladins could have said.
That was when it hit him. The memories of near death experiences were always the strongest.
"If you—" Matt croaked as Y/N forced her arm down on his throat even harder. He pushed it up and took in a sharp breath. "If you're going down, I'm coming with you."
Those few words were the only ones he could imagine even came close to being the key to the failsafe. He released his grip on the girls arm and it went crashing down onto his throat again. But, it wasn't hard. More just like a rebound before she pulled her arm away and back into her chest. She got up off of Matt and looked around the room in a complete daze.
"Y/N..." Shiro whispered.
"Yeah?" She questioned.
"Do... do you remember again?" He asked hopefully.
Y/N stumbled around in disorientation. "N-No. But I just blacked out—I don't know what happened. I'm sorry." She looked to her fellow Paladins who looked distressed and hurt. Keith's nose was bleeding and she knew it must've been her who caused it.
"It's alright, Y/N. Matt would you please take her to her room?" Allura asked softly. She knew the failsafe had been broken, but why Y/N didn't remember, she wasn't quite sure.
Y/N looked to Matt on the floor. He looked completely terrified of her. The reason he was on the floor, breathing unevenly and looking like he'd just fought for his life had to have been because of her. He looked scared. Her gut wrenched and she took a few steps back, horrified of what she'd done without knowing.
"Yeah." He agreed, forcing himself up off the floor. He took Y/N's arm and dragging her out of the room.
"What happened?" She asked, trying to slow Matt down. "Everyone was—they looked hurt. It was me, wasn't it? I hurt you?"
"It's okay." Matt couldn't make himself look her in the eyes. "Allura is sure that you have a failsafe in your mind which stops us from brining back your memories."
"No, it's not okay." This time, she actually made Matt stop walking by grabbing his arm but then she let go and drew her hand back to her chest, afraid she might lose control of what she was doing. "I can't remember anything, but I do know I'm not supposed to be hurting any of you. Please don't let me do that again."
"I'll do my best." He promised with a small, weak smile. The rest of the walk to her room was silent.
"Best room in the castle, trust me." Matt opened the door and showed her in. "You'll love the view."
Y/N looked around curiously and then out the window to the water. She stared for a moment and then turned to Matt.
"Who really was I to you?"
Matt's heart stopped. His lungs hitched. Shivers ran up his spine. He pursed his lips and turned for the door.
"Someone important." He raised his hand to his face to swipe away the tears in his eyes before they could fall. Y/N just stared, her brows now furrowed in sympathy. She could see he was hurting, and knew it was all because of her not being able to remember.
"I'm trying to remember, I really am." She croaked, fiddling with her fingers.
"I know." Matt gently intoned before shutting the door, leaving Y/N in the complete darkness.
The boy held everything inside until he made it to his room. There, he collapsed to the floor and screamed into his hands. It was unbearable to be around her when she didn't have one small piece of memory of him. He didn't want to start over. He wanted back what he had.
It hurt to breathe, it hurt to think, hurt to look out the window at those bridges, hurt to hear her unmistakable laugher which was imprinted into his memory. With every bone and muscle in his body aching, he refused to move up off of the floor where he lay curled up on as he allowed for sleep to consume him. He had to hope that there was a way to fix this, but he also knew that there might not be a way.
Y/N, just like Matt lay on the floor of her room in complete defeat. But, for her, things were a little different. Just like that day on Zarkon's ship he had spoken his venomous words which caused her to fall out of the light and into the dark, she felt a searing pain coursing through her body. It began in her legs and then flowed up to her mind where it swelled, causing a pain inside of her head worse than being shot in the head. She shook and cried for what seemed like days, when it had really only been seconds, as small pieces of memory began to piece themselves back together in her mind.
After a few minutes, she knew who she was, where she was, and what the people here meant to her.
