Stuck With Us
That silence extended into the Castle, too. Everyone, in their own time, found their way towards the med-bay with heavy hearts. There Y/N stood, in one of the pods, body stiff. She looked like she was sleeping, but everyone knew it was so much worse. Blue particles seemed to weave around her bloodied leg, almost as if it were desperately trying to print a new one.
"Will she be alright, Princess Allura?" Coran finally asked the question everyone else had been dying to, but feared the answer.
Without turning her attention away from the pod, Allura spoke. "Y/N is strong. All we can do is hope."
That wasn't the answer everyone wanted. Lance departed in a hurry, Shiro and Hunk soon following behind. Having hope wasn't the same as having proof she'd be alright. They couldn't just pretend she'd be ok. If it wasn't a guaranteed that she'd be alright, it was likely a no.
Lance rushed back into the room with a plunder of blankets. He set them up on the floor in front of the pod and then began to make his way for the door again. "Lance, what—" Pidge began.
"I'm brining the movie to her. Anybody who wants to join can." He shrugged before racing out to find the portable movie player he and Pidge had found in the space mall. To Lance, it seemed wrong to leave her alone in that creepy room. The room with the self-aware cryogenic pod that tried to kill him.
Sure enough, later that evening, Lance found all of his friends surrounding him. Lance had the slightest hope that on some subconscious level, Y/N could hear the film. Or, at least, could sense that they were all there with her. But, he doubted it. So much had happened in the past couple days and it really had taken a toll on everyone. One by one, the Paladins found their way to their rooms. All except Keith, Lance, Matt, and Pidge. Once the film ended the kids began to succumb to sleep in the large pile of blankets and pillows. But, not before a release of pressure exploded from behind and a body came tumbling out of the healing pod, landing right between Pidge and Matt.
While all of the boys stared in confusion, Pidge had begun tending to her new friend, letting her know where she was and what was happening.
"Is everybody ok?" Y/N forced herself up with a groan.
"Everybody is fine, you're the one who's hurt." Pidge lamented as she looked to the girls leg which was now in one piece, but still bruised blue. Y/N looked at it emotionlessly. "But you'll be alright."
"Now—" Y/N began, trying to stand herself up but failing.
"You should stay here the night, Y/N." Pidge said softly. Y/N realized Pidge was right and shuffled into the pile of blankets and pillows and immediately found herself slipping into sleep.
"We'll stay with you." Pidge smiled. "If you need anything, just wake one of us up." She said as she laid down beside Y/N. On the other side of the girl, Matt lay completely petrified. Y/N had curled up in the blankets right at his side, and he feared moving might wake her. His heart beat against his chest unforgivingly, feeling as if any moment it might explode. Just a few hours ago, he had thought the girl was dead. Now, here she was, right at his side.
"G'night everybody." Lance yawned, throwing himself into the blankets.
Everyone fell asleep absurdly fast, aside from Matt. He just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Not just because Y/N was right there beside him, but because a lot had happened today and he wasn't sure how he felt about it. It was now he realized how quickly things could change. In a way, he'd sort of let himself believe Voltron and anyone attached to it was invincible. But that wasn't the case. They were all still only human in an entirely new and unfamiliar part of the universe, guarded by the smallest pieces of armour.
Amidst his plague of thoughts, someone began shuffling around and then stood. He knew it was Y/N immediately as she tried to step away, but wobbled, trying to keep herself upright, one leg obviously weak. He watched the girls silhouette stumble out of the med-bay and into the hall, looking disoriented. Something inside of his gut tugged at him once again, and so he followed it.
Y/N happened to be quick, even with her injury, and it was a few minutes before Matt found her in the front room of the castle, the large domed window overhead revealing millions of stars. In the middle of the room, Y/N sat collapsed on the ground, shoulders rounded over under the moonlight which crept into the room. Shadows cast all around her.
"Y/N...?" Matt whispered softly and carefully, trying not to alarm the girl. He watched as her shoulders straightened and stiffened, a hand immediately going to her face and wiping what he assumed to be tears away.
"Yeah?" She tried to sound out through a brittle voice.
"Are you alright?" The boy asked, situating himself on the floor beside his new acquaintance.
"Yeah, of course." Y/N smiled widely, but her eyes were glassy and sad.
"You don't have to lie." He said sympathetically, making Y/N turn away. She knew he was onto her.
Y/N took in a deep breath and looked to the ground. "I finally feel like I have a place." She scoffed. "With people that care. And I—it feels too much like a dream and I'm dreading the minute I wake up."
"Well, unless I'm dreaming too, I can promise you won't have to wake up any time soon." Matt sounded as he reached for her hand. "I haven't been here much longer than you, but you always have a place here with us."
Y/N sighed. "But I haven't done anything to deserve a place here. You guys defend the universe and I haven't done anything."
Matt's mouth fell agape. "Are you kidding? You have risked your life for us and all of those people today."
Y/N didn't seem convinced.
Matt tightened his grip. "You do more than you think. You've supplied us with more laughter over the past day than ever before. You're willing to help us in any way possible, and you take any challenge thrown at you." He laughed a little. "Risking your life isn't something that correlates with your value in our eyes, you know? Things are different here than Aturdirie."
Y/N threw her head back, distraught.
"I--" Matt froze. "We'll care about you no matter what here, alright?"
Y/N's warm hand left his grasp and went straight to her face, clawing at her cheeks. For a moment, he wasn't sure what to do. So, he got up and left. Y/N didn't mind and figured he was just being Matt, walking away at a time like this was something he'd do. But in under 30 seconds he came back, and when he sat down, he wrapped a blanket around their shoulders. He felt, for the first time, pretty content beneath the stars with Y/N at his side. It reminded him of the nights back at home on earth when he and Pidge would sit on the rooftop, talking about everything and anything.
"Whether you like it or not, you're part of the team now. And getting away from us will be much, much harder than the Aturdirie." He let out a soft laugh to which no response followed, but he didn't need one. Her silence proved that what he said put her mind at ease.
At some point during the night, Y/N had succumb to sleep as Matt felt her head fall to the side and rest on his shoulder. Though it was tempting to stay there, to shock everyone in the morning, he decided against it. He picked up the girl and carried her back to the med-bay where Lance, Keith, and Pidge still slept, setting her down. Tonight was a memory they shared, and not one anyone else needed to know of.
