"Wait, so Y/N is my name?" The girl asked, looking to Matt. Her soft Y/E/C eyes killed him. He recognized her eyes, but she didn't recognize his.

"Yeah." He sighed.

"What's yours?" She asked, a small smile on her face.

"Matt."

"Well, Matt. Thanks for getting me out." She thanked. "Since it seems like you know more about me than I do myself, who am I?"

The boy stifled a laugh. "You're a Paladin of Volton—kinda. You're like me, you help the team out when they need it. We rescued you from a planet called Aturdir a while ago, you turned out to be the black Paladin's family member, so we had you stay with us while the rest of your people were moved to a new planet. You rescued a few hundred aliens by risking your own life. You nearly got both of us killed by doing what you consider fun. Then, some things happened and you ended up on the Galra ship where Zarkon must have wiped your memory."

"Ahhh—" Y/N gaped. "You'll have to explain in much further detail later."

"I'm hoping we can just restore your memory instead." Matt shrugged. He stared right at her, but it didn't feel the way it used to.

A while passed before Y/N spoke up again. Matt would have, but he was too afraid. "So, you and I knew each other well?"

Matt's fists clenched around the pods controls and he shifted uncomfortably. "You could say that."

"And do you know where this came from?" She asked, pointing to the still discoloured and scarred section of her leg. The sight of it made Matt's throat tighten and a few tears to fall from his eyes. He swatted them away quickly.

"Yeah. When you saved all of those aliens, you had your leg shot by a sentry." He explained.

"And I made it out fine?" She asked, to which Matt nodded in response.

She laughed slightly. "Awesome."

Y/N was obviously still the same Y/N, just lacking any recollection of herself and everyone who meant something to her.

Matt felt nauseous guiding Y/N through the castle halls to the control room. He knew that everyone would be waiting there for them and he had no idea how everyone would react to her now. Because, for all Matt knew, Shiro might be more torn apart than he was to find out Y/N didn't recognize his face.

Entering the room, everyones faces lit up at the sight of Y/N. Lance, Keith, Hunk, and Pidge charged for the girl but she backed away, running into Matt. Uncomfortably, he put a hand on her shoulder and sent his friends a forwarding glare.

"Who are they?" Y/N asked.

Matt closed his eyes and sighed. "They're the Paladins of Voltron."

"And he's—" Y/N pointed to Shiro, eyes flickering back and forth between him and Matt.

"Your family from Earth." The honey eyed boy confirmed.

"Got it." Y/N nodded.

The room fell silent. Everyone stared in confusion, disbelief, and doubt. Everyone looked frozen.

"Uhmm—I'm Y/N. Thanks for coming to get me." She rocked back and forth on her heels, just hoping someone would speak up.

"Yeah, ok, we know that." Lance blurted, putting his hands on his hips. "What's going on?"

"Apparently you guys know me." Y/N rubbed the back of her neck in discomfort, after all, everyones gaze was on her.

"Know you?" Shiro lamented as he stepped forwards. "I raised you when no one else was there to."

"Look," Y/N interjected. "I can't remember." She muttered shamefully, eyes cast to the floor. Her eyes glazed over and her face flushed slightly.

At first, Matt had been surprised to find Y/N still in good spirits despite having no memory. But, now, he saw just how distressed and lost she was on the inside.

Before Shiro could fire back something he'd end up regretting, Allura jumped in.

"Y/N, how about you go with Coran to the med bay and we will see if there is anyway to restore your memory." She comforted, guiding Y/N towards the red-haired man. He sympathetically put an arm around her shoulder and walked out of the room. Y/N looked back to Shiro a couple of times, very obviously trying her hardest to remember him, but she couldn't latch onto anything in her mind.

"How could you say that to her?" Allura turned to Shiro, anger flooding her face.

"She's stronger than that! She should remember me!" He snarled.

"Think about what they did to you in that ship, Shiro." Matt rasped. "Wiping someones memory should be easy compared to some of what he's done—"

"Just figure it out." Shiro yet again looked to Allura with a harsh glare and walked off. The princess sighed and made her departure just after the black paladin.

"She...really doesn't remember us?" Pidge asked quietly and it broke Matt's heart a little more. Keith and Lance looked as equally pained.

"No." Matt pursed his lips, shaking his head. "Don't worry, Pidge. If anyone can restore her memory, it's Coran and the Princess."

The team seemed to remain separated throughout the rest of the day. Shiro refused to let anyone in his room, Matt engrossed himself in rebel information, and Allura scanned through her fathers old books, searching desperately for any information that could help them bring Y/N back.

While she scoured the shelves, Coran began screaming over the intercom for the Paladins to come to the med bay immediately. But, Allura had found a small book, a journal, she had never seen before. One written by her father entirely about Zarkon.

"PRINCESS!" Corans voice echoed through the room but she didn't answer. Flipping though the pages, Allura began to notice that everything written in the book was about things, seemingly impossible things, Zarkon had found ways to accomplish. Such as ways to simply block someones hearing, remove their sight, limit movement... even remove someones memory.

Allura fumbled with the book and tried to focus on the page despite Coran's pleading calls over the intercom. She couldn't set the book down now. Not now. The page vaguely explained how Zarkon went about removing someone memory by just manipulating them with his words. When she reached the bottom of the page which was labelled 'retrieval of the former mind' a warning was underlined in dark ink.

'He has a way of removing the memory temporarily, not permanently. Thus, he has created a failsafe in the mind in order to inhibit anyone from restoring their memory. This failsafe causes the person to become extremely violent in the case that someone makes an attempt to bring back their memory.'

'There is only one way to retrieve the memories. He explained to me that he chooses one phrase from a persons past which left a very vivid memory as a kind of key. Most often, a phrase spoken by a close confidant from a persons past. When they hear the phrase, the failsafe will stop and their memories will come back.'

"PRINCESS ALLURA!" Coran screamed again, this time more frantically than ever. She now had an idea of what might be causing such a conflict in the med bay, and she didn't like it one bit. Mostly because she had no idea what that phrase could be.
