By My Tainted Soul
"Y-you're--!" Petra gasped, stumbling away from him. "H-how is this possible!"
Levi's face was wild, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes blood red--
"You're a vampire, Levi?" Petra shook her head, overwhelmed. This man who she loved, who she'd fallen in love with, who was her everything, was now the creature she'd been trained to kill.
Petra Ral was a vampire hunter. It was her job...no, her obsession, ever since her parents had been killed by the supernatural creatures.
She'd been taken in by Oluo Bozardo, famous vampire hunter with a kill count of 39 solos and 9 assists, leaving him with a total of 48 vampire kills.
Of course, that had been the number when she'd first met him. He probably had upped the count even further at this point.
Oluo, who had also lost his parents to vampires, had taught her everything she needed to know. How to identify a vampire, how to disable it, what its weaknesses and strengths were, how to kill it, and--
--how you should never, ever, feel pity towards a single one of those vile creatures.
And here Petra was now, faced with a terrible choice. To act, or not to act? To kill, or not to kill?
Levi and Petra had met at a park, looking as normal as two people could be. The section they were in was a quaint little area next to a pond, with a single bench. When Petra had arrived, Levi had been occupying the bench, so she sat down next to the water.
A few minutes later, he'd joined her, looking a bit nervous (and dare she might say--a bit shy as well). They'd struck up a conversation, and before long, they'd gotten to know each other.
They'd both lost their parents at a young age, and had grown up in not the most decent homes. They had to learn to be self dependent at a young age.
Petra was delighted to finally meet a young man she was interested in (her career didn't allow for much courting time), so she immediately developed a liking towards him.
It was a bit odd, Petra thought, as she reflected back now, that he'd been the one to initiate their conversation. Vampires rarely interacted with humans in the physical sense. They stayed with their own kind, mainly because most humans despised them.
But no, Levi had sought her out for some reason, and it couldn't have been to eat her, as Petra had initially thought when she'd learned he was a vampire. If he had wanted to do that, she'd have been dead long ago.
Could it be that he really...actually...lo--
No! Of course not! What a silly notion. He was a vampire. Vampires were evil. Each and every one of them deserved to die.
Gritting her teeth, Petra wished for her silver stake. It was a mere few feet away, hidden under a floorboard. She inched towards it slowly.
Ugh! She hated this situation! Petra had invited Levi over for dinner for the first time (she should have realized something was up when she saw how little he ate) and had accidentally cut herself with a knife while chopping carrots.
Levi, unable to control himself at the sight of blood, had slipped and revealed his true form. Now, his red eyes glinted dangerously as they took in the crimson liquid slowly dribbling from the wound in her finger.
"Back away!" Petra shouted, trying to sound braver than she felt. This situation was bad. "Don't come any closer!"
Levi's eyes were glued to her hand for a moment longer before he finally tore his gaze away. "Petra...please wait! It's not what you think."
"You're a vampire!" Petra cried, scooting closer to the floorboard. "What else is there to know?!" Just a bit more...
Levi looked desperate. "I'm not! Well, I am, but I wasn't always! I want to live a normal life--"
"A normal life?" Petra shrieked. "You kill humans! You killed my parents!" There! The floorboard was right beneath her fingertips!
With speed only acquired from slaying vampires, Petra pried the board loose and yanked out her silver stake.
Levi instinctively hissed and shrunk away, and Petra took the opportunity to drive it towards his heart.
However, her stake flew through empty air and impaled the plaster behind him. He had disappeared--
"Petra!" Levi's shocked voice came from behind her. "Petra, you're a vampire hunter?"
Petra growled and grabbed for her stake. "I guess I wasn't the only one deceived!" But her fingers closed on empty air. "My stake-!"
"Right here," Levi said, holding it at arms length, eying it in disgust. Curse vampires and their enhanced speed! "Petra, stop. I want to talk to you."
Petra gritted her teeth. At least, if he started talking, she could think of a plan to escape. "Fine! Speak!"
Levi sighed. "The first thing I want to tell you is that I mean you absolutely no harm. I love you, Petra, just like I always have."
Petra snorted, her feelings thoroughly hurt. She would admit, she'd fallen in love with him too, but her emotions had been jumbled by this sudden revelation.
"I wasn't always a vampire. I used to be human, but I was turned."
Petra looked up in surprise. "You were human?"
"I was bitten," Levi said. "And was about to be eaten, but was saved by another vampire. I won't mention any names." The image of the large blond man who'd chased away the attacking vampire floated through his mind.
"Y-you mean another vampire rescued you? Even though you were a human?" Petra had stopped trying to come up with an escape plan, and was listening intently to Levi's story. She supposed it did make sense, since Levi hadn't tried to eat her before. Humans who were turned to vampires were often more reluctant to indulge in their former species.
"Yeah..." Levi sighed. "But he couldn't stop the transformation. He...helped me the first few weeks after I changed, to help cope with the new form. That's why I also have a soft spot towards vampires. They're not all bad."
"They are!" Petra cried. "They're menaces who devour humans!"
"But humans also kill them!" Levi said harshly. "They're--we're--not emotionless monsters like you think. There are vampires who despise the fact that humans are their food. In fact, some don't even drink their blood. It is possible to drink animal blood, you know."
Petra scowled. "But it's not as pleasurable for them. So there are vampires who kill humans too."
Levi shook his head despairingly. "I'm not one of them, Petra. I want...to live like a human. I want to stay with you."
Petra bit her lip. Levi had never been the type to be so emotional, so he must have been really desperate to be showing this side of him to her. "I...want to stay with you too. I believe your story...but I don't know how this could possibly work. A human and a vampire...Levi, how would we manage? There's also my personal history with vampires to take into account. I don't know if I could ever feel the same way about you."
Levi's steel gray eyes bored into hers. "There is one way we could get through that."
Petra stared back unblinkingly. "No, Levi...how could I...as a vampire hunter it would be a complete violation..."
"I can make it happen."
Should she do it? Should she become like him? If it meant staying with the man she loved...
"Then swear it. Swear that you will do it."
"...I swear it. I swear by my soul."
Petra exhaled. "Good."
"Petra...?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
And they lived happily ever after:)
The end.
