12: Apprentice
A quarter moon had passed, and now along with Blizzardpelt and Spiderpaw, Foxclaw had occasionally been training with Tinystripe and Sandyfang as well. It had been a shock to find her friend in the Place of No Stars, but it wasn't a terrible discovery. This gave Foxclaw more time to spend with the other she-cat without having to sneak out.
As well as that, Soaringpaw, Swiftpaw, and Birdpaw had earned their warrior names, and were now Soaringlight, Swiftstrike, and Birdflight.
However, today Foxclaw wasn't thinking about Tinystripe or the new warriors at all, for it was the day a certain litter of kits would be becoming apprentices.
The cats of BoulderClan were gathered below the meeting boulder, Oakstar standing on top. Foxclaw's body was surging with hope as his voice rang over the camp.
"Today three kits have grown to be six moons old, and it is time they begin training to be warriors as apprentices." Oakstar said, the gathered cats waiting in anticipation. "Heatherkit, Honeykit, and Hollowkit, please step forward."
The three kits emerged from the crowd, all three looking as if Seedpelt had just groomed them. They all looked excited beyond belief, and Foxclaw could tell it was hard for them to stand still.
"Heatherkit, from this moment on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Heatherpaw." Oakstar stated, looking over to a certain cat in the crowd. "Larkpoppy, you will be her mentor. I trust you will teach Heatherpaw to be loyal and precise as you have been."
Larkpoppy nodded respectfully, and Oakstar contined, turning back to the three young cats. "Honeykit, until you earn your warrior name you will be known as Honeypaw. Stonecloud will be your mentor." The tabby leader gazed at the grey tom, who was sitting near Foxclaw. "Your skills have been proven time and time again to be vital to our clan. I trust you will train Honeypaw well."
"I'll do my best." Stonecloud responded with a purr.
Finally, Oakstar addressed the smallest kit. "Hollowkit, from this moment on, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Hollowpaw." Foxclaw felt her heart skip a beat as her leader looked her in the eyes. "Foxclaw, you have learned well from Berrytail, and are an expert fighter. I trust you will pass on your qualities to Hollowpaw as her mentor."
Foxclaw could feel her chest swell with pride at his words. I'm a mentor! "Of course." She dipped her head respectfully, before stepping forward to touch her nose to her new apprentice's.
"I promise Hollowpaw, I'll make you the best warrior this clan has ever seen." She whispered to the young cat, purring as Hollowpaw's green eyes lit up in excitement.
"Heatherpaw! Honeypaw! Hollowpaw!" The clan chanted, and it was clear that the new apprentices were thrilled. Foxclaw noticed that Heatherpaw appeared a bit uneasy, but she ignored it, she's probably just nervous about training.
Foxclaw looked to her apprentice, warmth in her amber eyes. "So, Hollowpaw, how does seeing the territory sound to you?"
"It sounds awesome!" The small grey cat exclaimed, purring.
"Mind if we join you?" Stonecloud asked, approaching the two with Honeypaw at his side.
"Of course not, the more the merrier." Foxclaw replied.
Honeypaw looked up at the warriors, her blue eyes bright. "Can Heatherpaw come too?"
Stonecloud looked towards the ginger tabby warrior. "Larkpoppy, wanna show Heatherpaw the territory with us?"
"Of course." Larkpoppy replied, her tail high in the air. She seemed happy to have an apprentice as well. "Come on Heatherpaw, let's get going."
"O-okay...!" Heatherpaw padded over to the group. Foxclaw gave her a strange look. She sounds disappointed... why? Larkpoppy's great with young cats, she should be happy to have her.
"Let's go! Let's go!" Honeypaw exclaimed impatiently, already waiting by the camp entrance.
The group followed after her, and the six cats left the camp.
