Chapter 2: (Atomic) Breath of new life

How on earth is one supposed to raise a baby Godzilla? What does he eat? Does he eat? Did any of the movies specify this?

Most importantly...

How did this thing come to life?

Thousands of questions ran through Free's mind as he stood quietly in the anti-radiation chamber. The large cylindrical tube housed himself, a hospital bed, an IV drip, A Defibrillator, and a cart full of medical supplies which he was not allowed to touch.

A young female doctor smiled at him through the round window in the side. She turned back to the rest of BC Sol.

"So how long will he have to stay in there?" Chris asked, anxiously glancing at her best friend.

"His exposure to the radiation from the.......egg, was longer than we would like. The radiation burns on his upper arms will take time to heal. The medicated air that's being pumped into the chamber will suck out any radiation that's still in his clothes and bloodstream. He'll have to stay in there for a couple more days, at least until we can do a tox screen and it comes back not radioactive." The doctor explained, glancing at her clipboard.

Chris nodded in agreement, despite not understanding anything the doctor just said. Free tapped on the window's glass, making his teammates look at him.

He smiled sheepishly and pointed down toward a button on the other side of the glass. Silas went up to it and pushed it, Free mirrored his actions with the button on his side.

"How's the egg doing?" Free asked through the speaker.

"It's fine. Honestly, we don't know what to do with it. I've put it in the basement on an old mattress and some blankets, but I don't know what heat level a gojira's egg needs." Silas answered.

"Put it over a fire."

".....What?"

"A bonfire," Free repeated. "Start a bonfire near my stadium in the forest, and put the egg over it. It may not be a nuclear power plant, but it's as hot as we can get. Godzilla needs a lot of heat to survive."

Silas blinked, considering what Free said. Starting a fire in a forest was very risky, and frankly, probably illegal. Then again, keeping the egg was illegal too.

"I'll see what I can do."

Free seemed satisfied with the greenette's answer, as he nodded and left to go sit on the bed.

---------------------------------

About a week later Free finally came home, and much to his surprise, the egg doubled in size while he was away. Silas kept it outside above a fire, the flames licked eagerly at the shell as Free approached. The bottom of the kaiju egg glowed red with heat. The spikes began to chip, Free knew it was close to hatching.

He crouched by the fire, watching the egg as it incubated.

"Oh, you beautiful creature...How did you come to exist?" Free asked himself as he tilted his head. He pulled out the blue book Silas gave him. It contained all the information about Godzilla and his species.

"So it takes about 50 years for a Gojira egg to fully incubate?" Free pondered as he read the passage. "So it's been in that forest for 50 years? And I never found it? Maybe it only glows once it's close to hatching."

As if to answer his question, a loud crack came from the egg. A spike had fallen off and rolled into the fire. Free backed up with a gasp and got to his feet. One by one, the spikes began to break off and fall onto the smouldering ambers.

Not long after, a smooth black egg sat in front of him. Free quickly grabbed the bucket of water that was sitting near the stadium and doused the flames. He sat back to watch a miracle.

Cracks began to form on the egg's surface, a small clawed hand poked its way through. More cracks followed, pieces of shell falling to the ground. Another hand followed and ripped a large hole into the mostly broken eggshell.

And then, the hatchling(?) tumbled out of the egg and onto the grass. Free stared wide-eyed into the deep blue eyes of baby Godzilla.

The infant looked up at him and chirped. Free was astounded, it really did look like Godzilla. Black scales lead up to a broad head with big eyes. Jagged spines ran down its back and tail, rounded at the tips. Free assumed the spines would sharpen when the hatchling got older.

The baby gojira stood up and tottered on its legs. The thing was bipedal apparently. It was easily almost Free's height, rising to his shoulders.

A warm love filled Free's eyes as he gazed down at the baby. He reached his hand out and scratched its nose, making the Gojira look at him in surprise.

"Hello there little one, welcome to the world."
