Ten thousand years ago Wan entered the Spirit World where he coexisted with spirits. In the Spirit World he learned Dragon Dancing from the ancient White Dragon, which helped him drive off evil humans and protect the spirits. Wan decided to travel the world to find the other lion turtle cities and left the spirit oasis with , Mula the cat deer he had saved. During his journey, he encountered a stampede of fleeing spirits and Wan went to investigate. There he saw the white spirit, Raava and the dark spirit, Vaatu fighting. the dark spirit, Vaatu, begged him for help and said he had been tortured by his counterpart for ten thousand years. Wan then used his firebending to break Raava's hold on Vaatu. In doing so, however, Vaatu was free to spread chaos across the world.

Feeling bad about his mistake, Wan offered to help Raava track down Vaatu, but he was told to stay out of the conflict. After the light spirit flew away, he resumed his original goal of finding the other lion turtle cities. Wan encountured Raava again and promised  to rectify his prior mistake and help Raava fight Vaatu. However, he would need to be stronger. He approached the air lion turtle and requested that he be granted the power to airbend. Over the course of a year, Wan and Raava worked together, training to master the four elements in order to face and defeat Vaatu by the time of the Harmonic Convergence. Wan and Raava came across a village in the Spirit Wilds near the fire lion turtle which was inhabited by Wan's friends. There they met the ancient White Dragon.

"Raava, it is known that Vaatu has become far more powerful than imagined. Our human friend will not be able to help you, the dark spirit has corrupted far too many spirits already." The white Dragon's voice boomed with wisdom that can only be seen in the Spirit Realm.

Raava sighed, "It's our only chance in restoring balance to the world."

The dragon, surronded by spirits of the forest replied whispered, "Maybe the ancient spirits can help."

"What are you saying?"

Suddently a bright white light shone through the valley, escaping dragon's hot mouth. The white light traveled to Raava, "Take this to Mother of Faces, let her make a new identity with my spirit. It should be strong enough to aid you on your journey."

Raava, Wan and the cat deer spirit traveled deep into the forest in the search of Mother of Faces, when they found her the spirit of the dragon was not enough, so she took the soul of the Mula, the cat deer. Combining two spirits, the Mother of Faces, with the help of other ancient spirits made a human girl Asozi, a dual bender that will be later known as Traveler.

Asozi, an earth and air bender by making of Mother of Faces understood her responsibility in bringing balance to the world. Aiding Raava and Wan in their travels. Spirits (and humans) would later call the girl Traveler. 

Wan, Raava and Asozi would later on defeat Vaatu. Finding newfound strength in the Avatar State, Wan was able to trap Vaatu in an elemental cage and imprisoned him in the hollow of the Tree of Time in the Spirit World. When Wan finally imprisoned Vaatu, Asozi was drawn to the astral energy of the Tree and by touching it in her human form embraced a part of the spiritual power of the Tree. That mistake would later on cost her greatly.

Wan closed the Northern portal while Asozi guided spirits from the Mortal World to the Spirit World via Southern Portal. Wan, as the Avatar, and Asozi, as traveler, would be the bridges between the two worlds and would work to maintain balance in the world of man while teaching them to respect the spirits. 

When Asozi embraced the spiritual power of the Tree of Time, she was able to fully travel into the Spirit or the Mortal world, but her journey was where the Avatar was. Until, she was cursed and killed, leaving the first Avatar Wan to live his life without the love of his life.

Travelers were rarely mentioned in the Human World, but the spirits remembered. 

With the birth of princess Airina of Aqnis, the Traveler was back after ten thousand years.
