"Look, she's getting out now," Freddy whisper shouted from beside me, making me sigh for the hundredth time.
"Well, why don't you get out of here and tell that in her face instead? I too, can see her Pontiac. We'll go five minutes after."
The number one suspect, Olivia Stewart, was famous for being a cold blooded assassin in the vast city of Las Vegas. Her name was known by the police as well the small and big guns here, and rightfully so. She was as perilous as they came, and didn't fail, ever. I had personally never worked on catching her ever since I transferred, so this was my first, and I was thrilled. When it came to experience, she was definitely my senior, but my gritty attitude wasn't any less known, so she was in a lot of trouble.
This bar that she entered was well known as it hosted one of the wealthiest people every night, with the most bomb drinks and chicks. Whether we would catch her red handed or not, was still a mystery. I wasn't so confident when I looked over at my assistant, but this was a task we had to do, to solve the latest murder case of the businessman Richard Johnson.
Precisely five minutes later, we exited our very humble Omega, entered the reception and were escorted to the main hall, where the dance and the booze flowed. I scanned the hall and instantly found her, sitting on a faraway table, clad in a black leather jacket, with matching bell bottoms and a white beret. Her blood red lips were wrapped around a cigar from a brand meant for highly wealthy people, and her feet were clad in heeled boots.
"She does have a lot of money man," I sighed before signaling Freddy to follow me.
We passed her table to sit on the one behind her, and Freddy immediately started yapping, "I thought she would look like an airhead, but she's a bomb herself, you know?"
"Yes, I know, so shut it now. Can you dig it?" I warned him menacingly which proved successful.
Two minutes turned into five, then into fifteen, then a whopping thirty, but she didn't even move an inch. I had finished two glasses of whiskey and three cigars, yet the screeching voice of the cabaret dancer wouldn't stop torturing my ears. Finally, when I thought I would die waiting, she stood up and casually strolled out of the building. We followed her as discreetly as we could and saw her turning in the opposite direction to where she parked her car.
Curious, we stalked her further into an alley, our boots making the softest noise. It was hard to control the noisy boots while stalking someone, but all the loaded chaps wore this, so it was perfect for our disguise. We were entering a shady alleyway and I instantly took out my pistol from my back pocket. I felt as if she had caught on to us, and if that was the case, confronting her was the only option.
But the alleyway we followed her into, had a dead end. Freddy was surprised, I, not so much. Suddenly, she turned and faced us, her eyes directly boring into mine.
"Well, what do we have here? Two chumps attempting to follow me? Who the hell are you?" She demanded in a rough tone, and swiftly pointed her own pistol at me.
I too, followed her actions, and then introduced myself, "I'm Danny Gonzales, head inspector of the police department of Las Vegas. Though it's our first time, its very nice to meet you Miss Olivia Stewart."
The sight wasn't rare, but very interesting nonetheless. Freddy was thrown to the side, and our pistols were pointed at each other. She narrowed her eyes as she heard me introduce myself, and then smirked.
"Oh, so right now, I'm talking to 'the man' huh? Interesting!"
"If you will care to answer some of my questions and put this pistol down, I will be grateful." I said sharply, then continued, "Anyway, it's a crime to point a weapon at a police officer."
"And it's not a crime when the police points their weapons at an innocent citizen?" She remarked sharply.
"Where were you on the night of the murder of Mr. Richard Johnson?"
"At a party."
"Where Mr. Johnson was present too. What were you doing with him, and why did he disappear after he last talked to you, only to reappear in the form of a dead body the following morning? Not to mention, I found your fingerprints on his body too."
"How can I know that? All I know, is that I accompanied him to the party six nights ago, and he left shortly after. I never got to see him again. And why would I kill Mr. Johnson? Without a motive?"
"Motive you say?" I chuckled loudly, which confused her even more. I thought that her actions were genuine, but I wasn't so sure. "The police has retrieved Mr. Johnson's phone calls with you, and I know you had caught him cheating on you. Nobody questions the motive of a jealous chick."
At this, she guffawed. "You have done some research huh? But I will only give you the skinny on the case. I was his ex-girlfriend, nothing else. We met that night, we argued, ended things, and he left. If you don't agree, I don't care."
With that, she turned to leave, but I wasn't going to let her get away so easily. I ran after and attacked her from behind. I held her neck with one hand, and used the other to strengthen my hold. She was a skilled fighter, so she retaliated by throwing her head back and hitting me in the face. We both straightened and faced each other, our eyes dripping with menace and determination.
This time, she punched me first and I followed with a jab to her side. Blood was running down my nose and she held her stomach with her hand. I didn't stop, and neither did she. We rained blows and punches but I was still unable to tame her. After only a few minutes, we were both spent but I didn't want to stop. She was the target of many other officers, but nobody had even come so close to catching her. I would become the first one to do so.
All felt right until her jacket came off and fell to the ground. Along with it, her wallet fell too. A single piece of paper caught my attention, and while she was busy regaining her breath, I took a look at it.
It was a letter from Johnson.
'Dear Olivia,
I know I have hurt you and I said wrong things to you, but you too, fucked me up real good. You can never tell me we're over, because I still love you. I told you thousands of times it was a mistake, but you don't want to listen to me, and threatened to kill me if I still pursued you.
But I won't let you have your way. I'll kill myself to punish you.'
