Rules and Guidelines

Seonghwa laid in his bed staring at the ceiling of his dorm room.

What a night.

His heart was still fluttering from singing in front of everyone. He hadn't done that since his middle school musical days.

But everyone had cheered when he was done and he couldn't help but feel a bit of pride. Ever since his dad had set him on the path for business he hadn't really gotten a chance to explore his music interests.

But now he wouldn't mind singing again. Especially if Hongjoong was playing.

Fuck.

He pressed his pillow into his face, groaning.

Why did he have to look so attractive with the pick between his teeth, his gaze down on his delicate fingers as they strummed the guitar.

Seonghwa pushed away the thought, instead focusing on how he was still not over the fact that Hongjoong put him on the spot.

How did he know he could sing? He couldn't remember a time in their dorm when he'd ever sung in front of him. He couldn't even imagine it.

Too many questions circled his mind and he decided to give it a rest, turning on his side to sleep.

...

Hongjoong placed his guitar back in the case, feeling smug about the success of his plan.

He could easily have prepared something with Seonghwa but putting him on the spot just seemed more satisfying to Hongjoong. He felt a little bad but he also knew Seonghwa would be fine. He just wanted to startle him a little.

He was also thoroughly enjoying the fact that Seonghwa had no idea he knew about his singing voice. He'd first caught a glimpse of it when he went to shower and heard someone singing quietly but it was incredible.

He didn't want to be a total creep so he took his shower after listening for a minute or so but he plotted to figure out who the individual was.

It wasn't until he had gone to take a shower after Seonghwa had left—though he hadn't expected it to be him, he just forgot that he wanted to shower as well and Seonghwa inspired him—and heard the voice again.

He almost couldn't believe it and might not have believed it if he hadn't seen Seonghwa's signature Toothless robe poking out from the stall.

He had held on to this information planning to use it against him someday and was glad he finally did it. He had almost forgotten, honestly.

It made him smile evilly to think of Seonghwa tossing and turning over it, wondering how Hongjoong could possibly have found out.

Although as much as he wanted to be smug, he was still a little mad that his voice was so good.

First of all, it definitely outshone his guitar. Hongjoong had to bring the pick out just to match his volume and fingers were quite sore afterwards.

He had hoped that catching him off-guard might make him mess up a little but his performance was utterly flawless. All Hongjoong had done was make Seonghwa look better.

But through it all, Hongjoong was secretly glad that he got to hear that voice again. It had been almost a year and Hongjoong had never heard anyone sing better. Hearing it sent back a rush of memories, and it had Hongjoong feeling nostalgic. Even though most of the memories were pretty shitty.

He sighed and crawled into his bed, looking out the window at the night sky. It was a view he hadn't been able to see last year and he was still adjusting to it. It was nice to even be able to look out the window without feeling like a creep.

He was definitely looking forward to next week as the freshmen so far were already pretty awesome. They had about twelve more students moving in later so it would be a bit more hectic but at least the floor would really start to feel alive.

Not to mention classes would be starting soon and Hongjoong had gotten into an advanced songwriting course and he was super pumped about it.

In order to get in, he had to audition one of his own songs and perform it to the best of his abilities. It was super stressful as he really didn't think he had the voice to be singing his songs but he's pretty sure he wowed them with the piano parts.

With excitement on his mind, he struggled to fall asleep right away but eventually knocked out.

...

The rest of the week flowed smoothly as practices got started. Hongjoong and Seonghwa didn't have to do much so they were mostly left on their own, sitting in their rooms on opposite ends of the hall.

Seonghwa had hung out with Kihyun and Hyunwoo a few times as well as Jinyoung. They'd mostly talked about their floors and Seonghwa would ask for advice on how to manage it once the floor is fully occupied.

"I've always found that the best way to get them to respect you and to keep things under control is to introduce a few ground rules as a united front," Kihyun told him and Seonghwa nodded.

"I've been working on some of my own but I'll have to confer with Hongjoong," Seonghwa said, his tone dropping on the last word.

"How is that going by the way?" asked Hyunwoo.

"It's honestly better than I expected. He seems pretty put-together and he's pretty great as a leader. I'm just waiting for him to slip up though. He's never been the most trustworthy when it comes to plans and order."

"Well I'm glad you're getting along alright. I think he probably feels a little bad about leaving you on your own last year. Maybe if you two talked about it you could resolve some things?" Kihyun suggested, sipping his coffee.

"I don't know about that. He seems pretty angry still actually. I was kind of an asshole to him but he brought it upon himself. I think it'll take a while before he's ready to talk about it. And before I am too," Seonghwa sighed.

"Of course, just take your time. You've got all year!" laughed Hyunwoo and Kihyun elbowed him.

Seonghwa was in his room now, writing the last few ideas on his notebook, delaying his inevitable conversation with Hongjoong. He kept rewriting his notes, trying not to sound too nitpicky. He didn't want Hongjoong to get mad at him for having too many expectations.

But at the same time he wasn't going to let their floor run wild. He wanted to maintain some order.

He just didn't have the strength to argue with Hongjoong. They were getting along pretty well so far and he was not in the mood to mess things up.

Finally he resigned to his fate and headed over to the other single across the dorm.

He knocked lightly before calling out.

"Hongjoong? It's Seonghwa. I was wondering if you wanted to make up a list of rules and guidelines for the floor together before the rest of the floor gets here."

He heard a chair scoot backwards and footsteps leading to the door. It swung open and Hongjoong smiled and waved him in.

Seonghwa couldn't believe the room was this neat.

Everything was tucked away neatly—all but a few shoes sitting outside of the closet. Hongjoong saw Seonghwa's gaze fall on them and quickly tucked them away.

"Sorry about the mess, I wasn't expecting guests," Hongjoong said with an embarrassed shrug.

Who was this man and what had he done with Hongjoong? Seonghwa didn't even know how to respond so he just nodded and sat down on the floor.

Hongjoong sat in front of him with his laptop open. Seonghwa felt a little old school using pen and paper but Hongjoong didn't seem to notice.

"Okay so I started a list if you wanted to hear it and we can go from there," said Hongjoong, eyes glued to his screen.

"Oh, me too," said Seonghwa looking down at his notebook.

"Oh. Awesome! Then let's just compare and see what we match up on."

They each read out their lists and found they were pretty much the same.

"I liked your idea for the guidelines in the bathrooms. We can type up those ones individually and print it out and laminate it so they can see it when they're in there. It's important to keep a space like that functioning cleanly," Hongjoong said, already opening a new document.

"Really? I was worried you'd think it was too much," Seonghwa replied.

"I mean wiping down the seat after you go every time is a bit excessive but other than that I think they are all important."

"Okay I guess that's fair. It's more of a personal preference."

"You can do it yourself before you go," Hongjoong laughed and Seonghwa cringed at the thought. As badly as he wanted a clean seat he did not want to wipe away someone else's mess to do so. He'd rather stand and squat.

They made up the lists and sent out an email with all of the new guidelines before finally printing them out and sticking them around the hall.

"You know, that was a lot less troublesome than I thought it would be," sighed Seonghwa, leaning back on the wall to admire their work.

"You have very little faith in me," pouted Hongjoong and Seonghwa laughed.

"I mean, can you blame me?"

Hongjoong gave him a playful smack on the arm before stepping back uncomfortably. They had been acting almost friendly today and it was getting weird.

"Alright well see you bright and early tomorrow! We'd better meet up at the entrance to make sure we are able to help as many kids move in as possible," he laughed awkwardly, heading back to his room.

Seonghwa was ready to be alone again too and sighed in relief at the end in conversation. After waving back to Hongjoong he went to his room and got ready for the big day tomorrow.
