"-and you know, I brought my entire argument out, like evidence and research and everything because I know she wouldn't hear it from me otherwise- like that one time before when we argued about hair types, which was so damn stupid, and I was right, but she wouldn't believe me just because she thinks I am not a 'knowledgeable' person-whatever, back to the story, after all that proof, you know what was her response?" Remia finally took a breath after continuously talking just to allow Seonghwa to reply.
"A 'No'?" Seonghwa replied honestly as his hands were busy dicing the carrots, but he still tilted his head to let her know he was paying attention.
"Exactly!" Remia hollered as she bent her body forward from where she was perched on the counter adjacent to where Seonghwa was working. "She literally just said 'no'. She didn't provide an argument, she didn't explain why she thinks that way, and she didn't say anything! Just a simple 'no'."
"Oh, god," Seonghwa replied, and his soft voice juxtaposed her very loud one, "that's frustrating."
"I know right!" Remia breathed out, feeling understood, "like, god, can she for once just admit I'm right instead of being so hellbent on being the right one, like every time I bring up anything she sees it as a chance to attack me and prove me wrong as if I'm provoking her by simply existing, which is like, not true, because I always try, time and time again, to make her feel welcomed, but how does she pay me back? By being an awful person, and I know that she only pulls this behavior with me, not with anyone else, so it isn't like she can't help it, she can, it's just her respect for me is so nonexistent that it simply doesn't matter to her to actually put effort to be nice to me, in fact, she puts effort to deliberately hate on me. It feels like I'm in elementary school all over again sometimes, I just don't understand why she would do this like-can I have some?" she paused to ask when Seonghwa came closer to her to dunk the diced carrots into the bowl with the rest of the chopped vegetables.
He took a few pieces and intended to hand them to her, but she opened her mouth instead making him giggle before his hand detoured and dropped them piece by piece in her mouth.
"Thank you," she mumbled with a full mouth.
Seonghwa turned to sink beside her to wash his hands but struggled because of the long-sleeved sweater he had on.
"Hold on," she mumbled as she scooted closer and gently put one hand around his wrist and the other pulled his sleeve up for him. The man handed her his other hand cheekily.
"Thank you," he giggled before washing his hands.
"Wait, so," Seonghwa started as he dried his hand with his apron, "didn't you say she's your junior?"
"She is!-" Remia got too excited she almost spat out the carrots and almost choked simultaneously. "Sorry," she uttered as she covered her mouth.
"It's fine," Seonghwa brushed off light-heartedly, "are you ok?" His thumb went up to wipe the corner of her mouth.
"Mhm," she replied and paused to actually swallow the food before talking. "Thank you," she said as he handed her a cup of water before continuing with her story but in a more collected manner now. "Yes, she is my junior, but the team made this thing where we all address each other as friends to help us get into the spirit of 'being a team'."
"What?" Seonghwa scoffed, "who the hell started that?"
"She did!" Remia cried out, frustration getting the best of her.
"Oh, god, of course." Seonghwa rolled his eyes before he started getting his salad dressing ready.
"I just don't know why she's onto me like we are the only two girls in the team. I thought I'd be having a new girlfriend to hang out with, but she just hates me straight off the bat, and like, you know me like I always believed that regardless of the person, if I put in enough effort to be nice to them, they'll like me, but I don't think that's a case anymore," Remia sighed as she took more carrots from the bowl beside her and chewed on them; stress eating.
"That's not a nice mindset to go around with though," Seonghwa told her honestly, and she groaned aloud.
"I know, I'm trying to stop thinking that way because it only, like, hurts me in the end," she replied, "but I really can't help it, I don't know why. I don't want to be a doormat, but I don't want to be mean either, and I feel like I don't know how to find the right balance between those two things, so I'd just rather put the expense on myself and be a doormat rather than being mean and hurting other people because I can't live with that."
"You deserve as much as other people do," Seonghwa argued as he pulled the salad bowl from beside her to pour the dressing on it.
"Ugh," she uttered, conflicted. "I don't know, it just feels easier this way for me."
"Yeah, but it has its repercussions," Seonghwa reminded as he put the salad aside and stood right in front of Remia with his body leaning on the two arms he placed on the counter beside her; caging her in.
"I know," she muttered. "I think I need a therapist," she giggled, trying to make the conversation light-hearted.
"I thought I was doing a good job," Seonghwa joked back, feigning offense.
"Yes, I'm sorry," she laughed, "you're the best." She hopped off the counter so she could wrap her arms around his waist tightly, making him chuckle.
She looked up at him, her chin piercing into his rip cage, "sorry for giving you an earful," she said as a joke.
"I'm more upset about the lack of carrots in the salad," he replied as his fingers subconsciously fixed her stray hair strands.
"Sorry," she giggled, not sorry at all.
"I love listening to you talk, Rem, do you know that?" Seonghwa said with a smile on his lips that made Remia flustered as she didn't expect it.
"That's a first," she muttered as she hid her face against his chest; her sudden shyness making him laugh and hug her back.
"Are you blushing?" he pretended to be shocked as he tried to pry her face away from him.
"No, I just got a sudden high-grade fever, what do you think?" she countered back sarcastically as she looked up at him.
"Oh, no, my baby," he gasped pulling her back to him and rocking her from side to side making her roll her eyes even though he couldn't see her.
"I hate you sometimes," she groaned, but it only made everything more hilarious for him.
"Sorry, I'm sorry," he breathed out after he stopped laughing, and he finally let go of his tight hold around her. She just smiled back with a light scoff. "Now go set the table so we can have dinner," he ordered her making her smile fall immediately.
"Ugh, Hwa!" she whined as she turned into putty in his arms, putting all her weight on him.
"Chop, chop," he replied as he tapped her shoulder twice, ignoring her little tantrum.
"Ok, ok, I'm going," she announced before she stood on her tiptoes to leave a peck on his cheek.
With a smile still lingering on his lips, Seonghwa picked up the salad bowl, but his eyebrows drew in closer. "Wow, she really didn't leave a single carrot in here," he muttered to himself and heard her evil laughter down the hall.
