J.W.Y || Playing House
"I'm home!" Zena announced as she stepped in the house before halting as she remembered how late it was.
10 pm
Not really that late but for a 4 year-old and a baby, it was way past bedtime.
"Shhh," she saw Wooyoung get up from the sofa in the living area with his finger to his lips as he carried the sleeping baby in his arms and rocked him gently. The coffee table was covered in towels, a bowl of water, bottles of milk, used tissues, a shirt, and medicine as evidence of what happened.
"Oh, gosh, Kyu," she whispered out as she slipped off her heels and walked up to Wooyoung. "How is he doing?"
"Well, his fever is going down, and he finally fell asleep, so that's good," Wooyoung replied as he gently patted the baby's head. Zena tiptoed to place her hand over Kyu's forehead to make certain.
"Yeah, it looks like the medicine was effective," Zena sighed in relief, "Did you struggle with giving it to him?"
"This is the third shirt I change into in less than 6 hours," Wooyoung brought up, "I've never seen him this fuzzy."
"Aw, my baby," Zena cooed sympathetically as she brushed through the snoring infants's hair with her fingers.
"I think his fever yesterday was way lighter, he cried way more today," Wooyoung informed as he slowly lowered Kyu for Zena to reach him.
"No!" Zena whined sadly before pecking the child's nose. Kyu scrunched his nose in response.
"I'll change his clothes then put him to bed before he wakes up again," Wooyoung stated as he brought the child closer to his chest, "you change out of these clothes in the meantime, then we can have dinner."
"Let him sleep with us," Zena spoke as she moved her hands away from Kyu.
"I'll put him in his crib, for now, when we go to sleep I'll get him. I don't want him to roll off the edge of the bed," Wooyoung replied before raising Kyu's face to inspect it gently.
"Alright then," Zena let out as she watched them walk away into the dark hallway.
After changing her clothes, she instinctually found herself in the kitchen going through the fridge to find nothing interesting.
Zena eventually moved to the pots on the stove and lifted their lids to see what Wooyoung made for dinner.
"What are you doing?" Wooyoung asked as he came from behind her making her jolt in place and hit her head against the cupboard she left open during her rummaging.
"Ah," she groaned as she held her head, "you freaked the shit out of me!"
"I'm sorry!" he laughed as he walked closer and held her head to examine it, "does it hurt?"
"Yes, it's the same cursed spot I've been hitting my head into ever since I was a child," Zena pouted making Wooyoung giggle before he walked away to open the freezer and grab something cold for her.
"Wait, I'll find you something to put on it," he spoke.
"What's for dinner?" Zena asked while he looked through the freezer.
"I made some ginger beef stew a while ago, but I think it has gotten cold because you came late," Wooyoung replied bitterly before taking out a bag of frozen peas and walking back to her with it.
"Ginger? Ugh, why?" Zena complained with a groan. Wooyoung put the bag of peas on her head and closed the cupboard before she hits her head against it again.
"You and Nana are the same," Wooyoung sighed, "it's not like I love ginger, either, I had to use it for Kyu."
"Still, you could split it into portions-"
"Hey!" Wooyoung barked back, "if you want to do that, do it yourself, I was struggling with a child that puked on my clothes every 2 seconds and the other that kept dragging me to play house with her!"
At that, Zena couldn't contain her laughter till she had to hold onto Wooyoung's shoulder to keep herself standing.
"Ugh," the man groaned as he put the bag of peas aside, and tried to push her off.
"No," she breathed out between cackles, "no, I'm sorry, I just-" she went on laughing harder. "Thank you for everything, I appreciate it, I just remembered something," Zena finally uttered before wrapping her arms around Wooyoung.
"What did you remember?" he asked back a bit curious but mostly salty.
"Remember when we used to play house?" Zena asked and a momentary silence followed that before they both burst out laughing.
"You made me drink that muddy water you called pudding!" Wooyoung recalled as he laughed out.
"Shut up, I used to take your shoes off when you got home from 'work'!" Zena reminded.
"When you gave our baby a face tattoo I lost it!" Wooyoung exclaimed.
"Oh, but you broke down our house's door with your car!" Zena pointed out.
"Please, when your mom caught us stealing her pots!" Wooyoung wiped the tears forming at the corner of his eyes as he held his stomach. Zena only laughed harder at the memory.
"Ah, gosh, I'm so glad I married you otherwise I'll never live the embarrassment down!" Zena cried.
"It's only more embarrassing that we got married," Wooyoung breathed out between heightened breaths only to laugh harder, "your mom holds all of this against us."
"No!" Zena whined with a hand on her belly.
"I'm glad we–"
"Daddy, what's going on?" the sleepy voice of Nayoung cut through the couple's laughter. "Oh, Mommy? When did you come back?" the child asked as her eyes threatened to close again.
"Nana," Wooyoung immediately walked up to her and picked her up, "why are you awake, dear? Did we wake you up?"
"No," she scratched her eye, and Zena walked up to her too and brushed her bangs away. "My sleep was cut," she explained vaguely.
"Cut?" Zena chuckled, "by what?"
"I don't know," the girl grumbled as she shut her eyes and leaned into her father's chest more. "Where were you?"
"I was at work, baby," Zena explained. "Did you miss me?"
"Hmm," she hummed with her flushed red cheeks, "yeah, Daddy was being not good."
Wooyoung gasped dramatically at her words. "Me?!"
"What did he do?" Zena giggled signaling Wooyoung to let her finish.
"He said he was going to-" she stopped to yawn for a bit, "he said he was going to play mom and dad with me ."
"Then what?" Zena asked, and the girl's lips protruded in a pout making both her parents coo in awe.
"Then he didn't," her voice broke as she covered her face against Wooyoung's chest. Even though Wooyoung was ready to bicker with her, the way she spoke broke his heart into pieces.
"No, Nana, I'm sorry," he apologized as he hugged her, but being the stubborn girl she is, she shook her head in disapproval.
"Oh, no!" Zena cried out dramatically as she took the girl from her father and hugged her tightly. "How could he?" Nayoung began to cry in her mother's embrace which surprised both parents.
"Nayoung-ah," Wooyoung called out as he stepped closer to her, "I was just busy with Kyu."
"Yeah, baby, Daddy was busy because Kyu was sick, and Mommy wasn't there to help him. He didn't mean to leave you," Zena reasoned with her, but Nana pulled away to look into her mother's eyes.
"Even last week he didn't play with me, Kyu wasn't even at home," she revealed making Zena gasp and look at Wooyoung who was proven guilty.
"Hey! Wait, when did I even?" Wooyoung defended himself as he found the two girls glaring at him.
"The truth has been revealed, Wooyoung, apologize," Zena commanded the flabbergasted man.
"Alright," he gave in, "I'm sorry, Nana, please forgive me." The girl looked at him before hiding herself against her mother's chest making Wooyoung scoff in disbelief.
"What should Daddy do for you to forgive him?" Zena asked loving the feeling of being the mediator here.
Nayoung turned to Wooyoung with the same frown before extending her hands for him to pick her up, and he did so despite being confused. She leaned in to whisper in his ears before looking into his eyes to see his reaction. Wooyoung blinked multiple times before tilting his head.
"That's all you want?" he asked in surprise which made Zena curious.
"What did she say?" she asked putting her arm around the two as she fixed Nana's dress that rose to expose her whole chubby thigh.
"Is it ok?" Nayoung asked as she gave her father the puppy eyes he could never say no to.
"Mommy needs to agree too, you know," Wooyoung pointed out, and Nayoung turned to analyze her mom to see if she could get her way before revealing the offer.
"What is it?" Zena asked.
"Can me and daddy build a fort and sleep in the living room?" Nayoung asked cutely.
Although Zena was prepared to say yes to anything, this one was a bit difficult. "Now?" she asked.
Nayoung nodded cautiously sensing a no coming her way.
"Baby, it's almost 11 pm now, you look so tired though, and Daddy too, how would you build a fort?" Zena cupped the child's face as tears built up in Nayoung's eyes.
"Mommy is right, and it is late so it won't be a lot of fun, we can do it on the weekend, though, we'll even watch a movie," Wooyoung offered as he wiped her tears.
"Is Kyu sleeping with you again tonight?" Nayoung asked, and both parents looked at each other before looking at her.
"Yes, only because he is sick," Wooyoung answered.
"Can I sleep with you guys too," she asked her eyes darting between both parents who thought about it as they glanced at each other.
"What if you get sick from Kyu?" Zena asked with concern.
"But I don't want to sleep alone," she pouted winning over her parents' hearts easily. Wooyoung gave an identical pout to Zena making her shake her head.
"How will she fit with us in the bed?" she mouthed, but Wooyoung only glared at her making her give in with a sigh.
"Of course, Nana," Wooyoung announced, "you can sleep with us."
Nayoung immediately jumped up in his arms to engulf him in a hug with a delighted giggle.
"But you have nursery tomorrow, Nana, you need to go sleep now, we will pick you up when we go to sleep," Zena informed, and was surprised that the toddler took it well.
"You won't forget me, right?" she asked to make sure as she looked at her mother through her eyebrows.
"How could I?" Zena laughed before pulling the two into an embrace. Wooyoung put an arm around her and hugged them as he giggled.
"I'll go put you in bed now, ok?" Wooyoung asked, and the toddler nodded but stopped him from breaking the hug.
"Good night kiss?" she asked as she looked at Zena cutely.
"Of course, your highness," Zena laughed before leaning in to kiss her rosy cheeks, but when she pulled away Nayoung kept her arms wrapped around her neck. The girl left a loud kiss on her cheek before finally pulling away to lean her head against her father's chest.
She looked at her father and pointed at her cheek demandingly despite being half asleep making the man scoff before leaning to peck her cheek. He pointed at his cheek too, and she sighed and blinked lazily before cupping his face to bring him closer and leaving a peck on his lips then falling back into his arms lethargically.
Wooyoung smiled smugly before looking at Zena victoriously making her chortle.
"Good night," she yawned as Wooyoung walked away with her.
"Good night, baby," Zena called behind her before a smile crept up on her face.
Zena walked to the living room and started to clean up around the place. She put the bowl and bottles back in the kitchen, collected the tissues and threw them in the trash, put the medicine back in the fridge, and put all the clothes in the hamper before Wooyoung showed up.
"You could've left it for me, you know," he spoke as he approached her.
"What took you do long?" Zena asked.
"She wanted me to stay till she fell asleep, then I checked on Kyu," Wooyoung explained.
"Oh, well," Zena breathed out as she put the wet wipes back in the drawer before shutting it.
"You look exhausted,"Wooyoung joked as his fingers went through her hair before he pulled her head to his chest.
"I am," Zena yawned out. "I don't think I have the energy to chew either, so let's just go to bed."
"Are you sure?" Wooyoung asked back in concern. "What did you even eat today?"
"Well, I had a very late lunch with Kami," she muttered as her eyes shut slowly. She wrapped her arms around Wooyoung's neck before breathing in his scent.
"That's good," Wooyoung replied, "our neighbors sent us some churros that I hid from the kids though, don't you want any?"
Zena immediately looked into his eyes, "where did you put them?"
Wooyoung laughed as he grabbed the plate over the fridge.
"Here you go."
They might've gotten older, but deep down they were still 7 year-olds playing house.
The video that inspired this (read the lyrics they are the cutest)
All things aside, I just love how this video shows that you don't need a great budget to have a good MV as long as you are enjoying yourself.
I don't know why I keep writing about Wooyoung being a dad, but honestly it comes very naturally. Zena, Wooyoung, Nana, and Kyu should have their own book tbh.
