Let's get on with the story, shall we?
~~~~~
My alarm clock buzzed loudly, causing me to almost tumble out of my bed. Blindly, I turned it off and untangled myself from my sheets, kicking the covers down to the bottom of my bed. Blinking, I cleared the sleep from my eyes and made my way over to my closet, dragging my feet as I went. I pulled the doors to my closet open and blinked before pulling out a gray t-shirt and faded jeans. Looking at the clock, I realized that I only had thirty minutes before I had to leave and go to school. Ugh. School. The most stressful, despised thing in human existence. Well, for me at least, but I could say that some of my friends thought the same thing. I took the quickest shower possible then ran out the door after eating breakfast. I put my earbuds in my ears and began my walk to school. One of the songs began to play on my phone. Ah, yes. That's a good song. I mouthed the words as I walked, nodding my head to the beat. My school was a fifteen minute walk from my apartment. I'm in Eleventh grade and have learned to drive, but I prefer to walk since I'm so close.
I reached school twenty minutes early, so I headed to the library like I usually do. My school's library is amazing. It's huge and has every book you would need. Need something on Auctioneering? They've got it. Need something on The Evolution Of Medicine? They have it. They even have some pretty strange subjects, like how to get away with murder or the best way to put a wedding dress on a horse. That's why I like the library, you can get lost in the maze of books and settle into a random place that you've never seen before, even though you've been in the library countless times. I passed by kids scrolling through things on their phones, and walked to the back of the library. I stopped the music and settled into a reading nook. I pulled out a book from my backpack and began to read. You know that point when you're reading and you don't see the words anymore, but instead you see the scenes playing in your head? Well, I can get so engulfed in a book at that will happen almost instantly. A couple of times I've almost been late to class.
I check the time on my phone and jump to my feet. Shoving my book into my backpack I thought, I'm going to be late for class.... I rushed out of the now empty Library and out the doors, up the stairs to my class in Room 217. Student were finding their seats and the teacher stood up as I entered. I didn't dare look him in the eye as I walked to the left side of the classroom to my assigned seat.
"Abigail! What took you so long?" my friend Riley Thedan hissed, shooting me a look. She brushed her blonde bangs out of her eyes. "Where were you?"
I pursed my lips. "The Library."
She rolled her eyes. "Again? This is the second time this week, and it's only Wednesday."
"Well I'm sorry if I get caught up in-"
"Ms. Davis?" I snapped to attention, whirling around to see my teacher, Mr. Havelot looking at me with one eyebrow raised. "Should I wait for you to finish your conversation or...?"
"No Sir. Sorry."
When he turned around I shot a glare at Riley. All she did was shrug and mouth, Sorry.
Mr. Havelot began to write things on the dry-erase board and half the class, including me, rushed to take out loose sheets of paper to take notes on. Another boring class, yet again.
Half the class I was daydreaming about impossible things. I had always been fascinated with engineering, mainly because I wished people weren't normal. I wished people were born with abilities, special ones, such as speed or flying. I don't know why, but I had always been fascinated with this kind of thing. Riley thought I was crazy because of it, but she was crazy herself, so she was one to talk. I just wished that this kind of thing was real because it would make our bland lives so much more interesting. I unconsciously took notes until class was over.
As soon was Havelot released us I packed up my stuff and dashed out the door, Riley in close pursuit. We had our next class together and then lunch. The rest of the classes we had on our own with other people in our grade. Riley and I pushed through the crowd of high school students and to our next class. We only had a four-minute break, so we had no time to go to our lockers, except before and after school. Our next class was English, which was one of the more fun classes. We got to talk more in that class than we did in some of our other classes. The only problem was that we sat nowhere near each other. I sat next to one of the most popular kids at my school, Ethan Carter. Ugh. He just sat there with his perfect sandy blonde hair and tan skin, always leaning back in his chair with the two front legs off the ground, talking to his friends behind him. He was going to fall someday. All the popular girls had a crush on him, and I suspected other girls did too. Including me. Yes, I would admit it. I had known him for two years, and one year after we "met" I started crushing. I ignored it now, occasionally we would have to work together, but that was the only times we talked to each other. I knew, with the amount of girls that liked him, I would never get him.
Riley and I parted ways once we entered the classroom, and she raised her hand in a three-fingered salute. May the odds be ever in your favor. I grinned and did the same, but honestly, the odds were not in my favor right now. Oh well, I would make it work. Somehow. I took my pencil bag and binder out of my grey backpack and placed them on my desk as the other students found their seats. Ethan sat down next to me as the teacher, Mrs. Kingsley, started the lesson. I didn't have to take notes for this class, there were no notes that needed to be taken. We were working through a packet that related to a book we were reading for school.
"Read chapters four through six with your table partner then answer questions 35-47 in your packet," she stated, brushing her dark brown hair behind one ear. "Once you're done you can read your book of choice silently by yourself."
Riley caught my eye and made a face that said, Good luck. We both knew that Ethan would make me read and then "help him answer the questions." In all reality, I would do all the work. As usual.
Ethan and I took our books out. I flipped to Chapter Four and said, "I guess I'll start reading."
"I can read if you want me to."
I glanced up, surprised. He never offered to read. Well I wouldn't pass this chance up. I shrugged. "Sure. Why not."
He began to read, his voice bring the words on the page to life. He should read more often. He read the first chapter then stopped. "Your turn."
Well, it was nice while it lasted. I began to read, and ended up reading the next two chapters. He didn't object, so I decided that it was fine. He helped me answer the questions, which was another first. We were the third group finished, and Mrs. Kingsley came by check our answers.
"Good job." she praised us, then added, "Check number 41, there's more to the answer than what you two wrote."
We agreed to check it and wrote down what we had missed. She checked the answer and declared it right. Which meant free-reading time. I pulled out Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and read until the other groups were finished as well. The class was over by then, time had passed much faster than I thought it had. Mrs. Kingsley released us once the bell rang, and we made our way out of the classroom. I hadn't even made it three meters from the classroom when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around, and was surprised to see Ethan. What does he want? I thought, as he said,
"Hey. I need to talk to you."
