Surprises

Edited.

Marinette's P.O.V

I rushed over to him immediately, eyes wide. I knelt down beside his unmoving form, sliding my hand behind his head and lifting him up slightly. He was heavy.

"Adrien?" I whispered anxiously. "Adrien, wake up! Are you alright?" I shook him slightly, but he didn't flinch. I could hear him breathing, but there was no other sign that he was okay.

Silently, I lifted him up and laid him down on my bed, smoothing down his hair and draping my blanket over him. I stared at his peaceful face for a few seconds, wondering how it could belong to someone who was in a mental institution.

Or, well, supposed to be.

Once I realized this, I staggered backward in surprise, my thought racing. "What is he doing here? How did he get out of Humble?"

"I don't think that's the question you need to be asking yourself, Marinette," Tikki murmured. "The real question is, if he escaped, they'll be looking for him, so what are you going to do?"

My eyes widened. She was right. If he somehow escaped, then people would be searching for him. As much as I hated to call him this, Adrien was allegedly unstable, and if he was with me, then...

I began to pace anxiously. "I need to wake him up. He needs to tell me how he got out of there, and why."

"Well, I think anyone would want to get out of a mental institution," Tikki said. "But he's completely knocked out. You can't wake him up."

"Well, I can't just leave him lying in my bed!" I said exasperatedly, running my hands through my hair. I walked over to the bed and knelt down beside Adrien's sleeping form. He was still wearing the institution's jumpsuit, and his hair was extremely messy, like he had been in a scuffle of some kind.

I petted the top of his head, trying to wake him up as gently as possible. I was a little afraid of what might happen if he woke up, so I tried to make sure he wouldn't be startled.

"Adrien," I whispered. "Adrien, wake up." I shook him gently. "Adrien-"

He suddenly jerked upwards, almost headbutting me right in the face. I recoiled, eyes wide, and my stomach dropped.

He wasn't awake.

He was having a seizure.

I gasped, frozen to the spot as his body racked with spasms. His eyes opened wide, but they were rolled back into his head, and he gave gurgling whimpers with every convulsion. My limbs jerked back to life and I made to rush over to him, but Tikki stopped me.

"Stay away from him!" she said.

"What are you saying, Tikki! He's going to get hurt!"

"If you come near him, he could hit you, and then both of you will be hurt!" she warned. "Do you want that?"

I stared anxiously at Adrien, my entire body aching to help him, but I knew it would do more harm than good. Tikki was right. If I tried to help, I could get injured by one of his flailing limbs, and make the situation worse.

"B-but I can't just stand here!" I said, a lump forming in my throat. I pushed it down. Now was not the time for tears.

"You'll have to!" she said, and then she zoomed into my purse. I stared after her incredulously. He was having a seizure and she was going to hide?

I watched Adrien helplessly, dread building in my stomach. What if he stopped, but he didn't wake up?

What if he never woke up?

My breathing grew ragged, and the lump formed again. I held my head, shaking almost as violently as Adrien was. I whimpered at the tortured sounds he was making. It was terrible. I was just standing there, and I couldn't do anything.

What if he doesn't wake up?

It felt like an eternity as I stood there, fighting back tears, my heart racing. I felt like I was going insane.

And then, the sounds stopped. His body grew still again. My body was frozen, horror filling me. Tikki was wrong. I was supposed to help him. I was supposed to save him and now he was-

He gave a huge gasp and propelled himself upward, eyes wide, breathing hard. He shivered violently, and his gaze ricocheted around the room for a few seconds before settling on me. He opened his mouth, struggling to speak.

"M-Mari-nette?"

Adrien's P.O.V

She sank to the floor, a whimper escaping her mouth. She looked terrified.

I tried to stand up, but my entire body felt like lead. My head swam slightly, and I felt like someone who had just gone on a roller-coaster that had spun uncontrollably. But even in my slow state, I knew where was.

Why was I in Marinette's house? How did I get here?

"Adrien..." she whispered, her expression changing into one of relief. "You're okay."

"W-what happened?" I questioned. "How did I...get here?"

"I don't know," she said. "I wanted to ask you that."

"I don't..." I trailed off, and switched to my mental voice. Chaos, what did you do?

I used any means necessary.

A straight answer, you cluster of brain matter.

Ouch! He sounded genuinely offended. After bringing you here, and going through the pain of separating myself from your body? Be a little more grateful.

What. Happened.

Okay, okay. I turned you into a chat noir, courtesy of Plagg-

I was Chat Noir?

No, you were a chat noir. As in, a literal black cat. Keep up. Anyway, we brought you here while you were having your beauty sleep, and then had a violent seizure as I tried to relinquish my hold over your body.

"Wh-" My eyes widened, and I looked back at Marinette. She was staring at me quizzically, and I heaved a sigh. "I...had a seizure?"

She hesitated, and then nodded slowly.

What the actual fuck, Chaos? You scared the shit out of her!

Um, I think you mean you scared the shit out of her. It wasn't my fault. There isn't really a less traumatizing way.

"Adrien," Marinette piped up. "I know you're still recovering from it, but I need to ask you how you got here."

My stomach dropped. Shit.

"I-" I cut off, having nothing to say.

"You're supposed to be in Humble," she said. "What happened? Did..." I braced myself for the question. "Did you break out?"

I said nothing for a while, just staring at her. There was nothing else I could do, so I told the truth. "Yes, I did."

Her eyes widened. "Adrien, why would you do that?"

"They wanted to kill me, Marinette."

"What? Why?"

"It...it's complicated to explain. Something happened. They deemed me dangerous, and I...I had to get out of there."

"But...what did you do? Why would they just-"

"Marinette?"

We both froze. The voice coming from behind Marinette's bedroom door was feminine. Marinette's mouth dropped open.

Shit.

Word Count: 1109.

I have a love for cliffhangers now. Ha.

Also, I didn't like writing this chapter. I guess it just didn't flow. Dunno.
