We found nothing but empty grasses

And thorny weeds across the tracks;

Only the rolling glint of the railway

And the warm sun against our backs.

Through sepia vintage photographs

I can see her pure and shining eyes,

And in the stillness hear her hear pound

Through the loneliest of goodbyes.

Oh, how she cursed the Last Spike

When it carried him away from her;

And her tears fell to sprout the field

While his scenery became but a blur.

Rusted metal sharpens at our feet,

Remembrance of steam trains past;

There's an endless sky above us

And that's where they rest at last.

It brought faithful hearts together

Across the land from sea to sea;

And it's only now I find its value

Since it brought you home to me.
