Chapter 2
While there was no way to know when Thaddeus Ross would visit the Compound, Wanda was still not excited about having to leave Vision earlier than planned. She had known their meetings would always be short and there were many things outside of Vision's control, but it was still irritating.
Despite knowing Steve and Natasha would be upset about it, Wanda convinced Vision to take the train back with her. She really shouldn't have disclosed their current location, but she trusted Vision not to let it slip.
"It will only be a few more weeks," Vision promised, looking down at their joined hands as they sat on the train. "I will be back to get you once everything is settled."
"It is still weeks," Wanda argued. "We don't know how much longer."
"Perhaps not," Vision agreed, "but Mr. Stark believes we are close."
With a sigh, she leaned her head on his shoulder. The train ride would last another hour, she tried not to fall asleep, not wanting to waste her time with Vision. Unfortunately, she must have dozed off because she woke up to Vision softly telling her they had arrived.
"I don't want to go," she moaned, stretching slowly. Outside, the town lights were coming into view.
"It will be no more than two weeks."
Even though Vision was certain that he and Stark could convince Ross into a new agreement, Wanda had her doubts. Nevertheless, she didn't argue and instead took Vision's hand as they stepped off the train.
"Did you contact Natasha?" Wanda asked as they ducked out of the empty train station.
"Yes, she said you were to meet her by the fountain," Vision told her. He stopped at the edge of the station and Wanda's eyes flickered in the direction of the fountain. "This is goodbye for now," he said softly.
Biting her lip, Wanda reached up and pulled Vision into a tight hug.
"I'll miss you," she muttered, her voice muffled by her shoulder.
"I'll miss you, too," he said. As he pulled away, he kissed her cheek quickly. "Goodbye, Wanda."
"Goodbye."
She let go of his hand and hurried off towards the fountain without stopping to look back.
It didn't take long for her to reach the fountain and when she did, she quickly spotted Natasha. Unlike Wanda who had her hood pulled up and a scarf wrapped warmly around her neck, Natasha had her hood down and her jacket unzipped.
As soon as Wanda approached Natasha, she was pulled into a tight hug. The first time Natasha had hugged her, Wanda had worried she was about to deliver horrible news. That was before she realized that it was how Natasha made sure she was truly alright.
"I'm sorry you had to come back early," Natasha said, pulling away from Wanda.
Wanda gave her a small smile and shrugged.
"It's only two more weeks before we can return," she reminded Natasha. "The wait will be alright, I suppose."
The streets were still empty as they made their way out of town, talking quietly.
The walk back to the shelter took just over an hour, but it wasn't the furthest they had been from a town while on the run. Often, they resorted to using shelters so far that they very rarely bothered to walk into the city at all. Despite the biting cold and the steady rain, Wanda didn't mind the journey.
"Sam is probably still asleep," Natasha said when they were about fifteen minutes away. "Steve will have a fire for us, though."
"Oh," Wanda said, thinking about the warmth. Her fingers had gone numb with cold. "That sounds nice."
"You go ahead," Natasha told her, rubbing her hands together. "I'm going to check the traps."
As Wanda nodded, Natasha slipped off into the woods to check the animal traps she'd set up while Wanda stumbled through the dark forest. It was still dark out even if it was early morning and the rain clouds overhead didn't do anything to help. She found their shelter without a problem, though, and was thrilled to discover that Natasha had been right: Steve had started a fire.
He looked up as she pushed open the door.
"Welcome back," he said. He pushed another log onto the fire and Wanda eagerly pulled off her jackets and scarf. She hung them up to dry then joined Steve beside the fire as he asked, "Where's Natasha?"
"Checking her traps," Wanda murmured, holding her hands out over the fire. "She'll be back soon."
He nodded, stoking the fire once again. At the resulting sparks, Wanda grinned and wriggled her fingers. She could never truly express just how glad she was that Steve knew how to make a good fire.
