...our best kiss was the one that had been exchanged a million times through our eyes before it reached our lips...
Once the credits started to roll, there was a beat of shocked silence from the audience before the lights came on.
I untangled my hand from Mara's, both of our hands grateful, as I continuously took out my excitement on her poor hand during the movie.
Leaning my elbows on my knees, I dropped my head into my hands. "Wow. Wow. Give me a sec-- I need to take in what I just saw."
Mara's feet suddenly hit the floor, her hand tapping on my shoulder fast. "You don't have time. Cameron is right at the stairs. We have to go."
"But the end credits scene--"
"I know, sorry, we have to go," she whispered, taking my hand. Eyes connected, she said, "Run like you're Pietro Maximoff."
Motivation in my heart after her words, I stood, running to cover behind the people who were leaving.
There were enough idiots who didn't know about an end credits scene to hide our crouching figures. Mara and I wiggled throughout the theater until we passed by Cameron, who was standing near the door.
I kept my panicking to a minimum, thanks to her hand in my own. It kept me sane. She made me feel like everything was okay.
Out of the theater, we sprinted through the corridor, using an emergency exit that led directly to the parking lot.
"Mission accomplished, I do say," Mara said cheerfully.
My churning stomach was enough to make me second guess my next move. Before I could back out, because I was very close to doing it, I blurted, "I want to do something."
"Something like--"
Skyrocketing my panic, I slammed my eyes shut and pressed my lips to hers. She had to drop my hand in order to position my face correctly, but we kissed. More importantly, she wanted to kiss me.
Patting her hip, close to suffocating, she got the sign and pulled away. I ran my fingers through my hair.
"Cute move," she said, wrapping her arms around my waist. "I would not mind at all if you did that again."
The second time, I kissed her correctly, with no rush, no embarrassment. It was a normal kiss.
Apart, Mara's brow furrowed. "Is it just me.. Or--"
"It doesn't feel as dramatic as I thought it would," I finished slowly, my eyes squinted in thought.
"Yes, exactly," she said, nodding.
Despite our sadness about the equally good and bad kiss, we stayed holding on to each other.
Lightly swaying, I said, "Fun night, though."
"Memorable," she added. "Exactly what I aimed for."
"I do feel like we should kiss again," I said. "Just to celebrate us going out of our comfort zones tonight, you know."
Matching my grin, Mara gained height by standing on her tip toes. "I feel the same way, Cliff."
