Chapter six
John brought me to all my classes throughout the rest of that day. I got to know him better, and i think i actually may have made a friend. He always seems so nervous around me though, and I feel him looking at me all the time. I've decided just to ignore it, and continue emotionlessly through the day. I think i actually perfected the emotionless part, I don't even have to force my emotions away anymore... they automatically never appear in the first place. I don't know if i should feel proud or not.
After all, my new kind-of-friend Marquis de Lafayette explained to me what 'love' is and apparently its a good emotion. which i never knew there was any kind of good emotion.
I also met Hercules Mulligan, my other-kind-of-friend. Although Lafayette was the boss at arts and crafts, Hercules was amazing at sewing and making any kind of thing with fabric. And the best part was i had experienced only a small amount of being bullied, which i think will increase significantly by the time word got around that there was a little blind kid to pick on.
I waved good by to John as George picked me up after school, apparently John had a dorm and would live inside the college. I don't think i could ever bear it, the memories of the orphanage would be too much, with all the different rooms in the hallway and children constantly pulling pranks. I held Georges hand, him slightly ahead of me so he could lead me in the correct direction. I followed him down some stairs and felt the sunlight slip away.
The subtle breeze changed into the fast gusts of wind from the subway trains rushing by. I was slowly getting more and more used to the constant sounds, my brain was adapting to all the noise. I boarded the subway with George and i heard the doors close a minute later. I hated teh subway. the lights outside made it hard to concentrate on anything, as they where bright and kept flashing quickly by.
I can, at times, see faint bits of light, but only when the lights are bright enough and its dark surrounding me. All i saw was a little dot of faint light appear, move across my vision at high speeds, then disappear. I closed my eyes, not like closing them ever helped me before, but now it did as it blocked out the light.
"You okay son?" George asked me, probably noticing my shut eyes.
"Yeah, just thinking," I replied.
I could feel a couple people glaring at me. But by now it was easy to ignore the odd sensation.
"So, get any homework?" George asked.
"No, they said i should not get any because its just my first day. so unfair. i bet i could handle all the homework as good as the smartest student!" I complained, my eyes still closed.
"I think you may be the smartest student, and the weirdest. what kid honestly wants homework?" George laughed.
"Me, i am the weird kid who wants homework," I replied, Some emotion was trying to push through is protective barrier. Probably pride, i tried to let it through so i could experience it, but it was pushed away by my fire wall.
"So then, what do you want to do once we get home? I was thinking of watching something on the TV, what do you normally watch?" George asked, obviously happy he had gotten me in a conversation where i did not always respond with one word.
"I don't watch TV, I'm BLIND," I said, rolling my sightless eyes.
"Well yeah, sure, but you can still listen to it," George said.
"I've never heard TV either. We did not have one where i come from. My entertainment was listening to people play outside," I said, staring blankly ahead of me.
"well ill introduce you too it," George said.
I was slowly gaining trust for George. he was nice, there was no abuse so far, and everything him and Martha have done was nice and affected me positively.
"Yo, get your creepy kid to stop staring at me," Someone said in a rude tone.
I awkwardly looked down instead, at my feet. I could feel how awkward George felt right now, it was kind of like heat coming off of him in waves. The subway came to a stop and George led me off onto solid ground. we went up above ground again, and we walked a block or so until we arrived at his house. He led me inside, and i was greeted by a very enthusiastic Martha Washington.
"How was your day honey?" Martha said, hugging me right when George opened the door.
"meh," I replied.
I walked inside the house, i did not know how to react to affection, it was an entirely new thing. When i did not know how to deal with things, usually I just ignored them or brushed right past them. I walked up the stairs, almost tripping only once because of the railing, and then i reached my room. I opened up the door and walked inside, then flopped down onto my bed.
As normal, there was nothing for me to do. being blind and all. so i finished off my book within two hours and then went back downstairs, I was going to try and memorize a bit more of the house. Not because i thought i was going to stay here, but because i needed good escape routes. I heard harsh, scared panicked breathing and i froze. Who was in this house? I listened more, then i heard footsteps sprinting away. but the footsteps came from the same spot... like someone was running in place.
I headed towards the sound, my hand was outstretched in case there was anything in front of me. My hand hit something. something soft, and then i heard a scream and i jumped back what felt like a couple feet.
"Oh, Alexander you're down here," I heard Martha say calmly.
"Whats all the screaming?" I asked, shaking slightly.
"I'm just watching a movie," Martha laughed. "here, come sit."
I felt Martha's hand on mine and she led me over to a couch, where she sat me down. I heard panting and the obvious signs someone was scared from ahead of me. Whatever movie they where watching, someone was freaking out.
"Whats happening right now in the movie?" I asked, curious to see what was going on.
"Oh, well here ill pause it and explain some to you," Martha said, and the noises stopped.
After a very long explanation at what was happening in this movie so far, called "The Village". I was so far pretty interested, as the main character was blind and had to go on a long perilous journey. Martha then hit play and all the noises came back.
"So there's one of those monsters i explained to you earlier, and the girl is trying to get away from the monster. Shes in a very dark forest, and she can hear those weird noises the monsters make. and now the monster just charged at her, but she dodged it," Martha explained.
About an hour of so later, the movie ended. And George came into the house, very loudly, as if he where struggling with something and had ended up kicking open the door. Martha sat up and ran over to help him carry that something.
"Alexander i bought you some more Braille books, I thought you might need something for entertainment," George said.
"Oh, thanks," I said.
*~*
I woke up that morning, some weird sensation burning into my face. Was somebody watching me? it was almost the same sensation... but more... I don't know how to explain it. more subtle, kind of ghost like. it was as if whatever was staring at me didn't have life inside it, the sensation was more cold and lost. So i opened my eyes, sat up in bed, and tried to listen to what was happening.
But i did not need to listen... I could see It. It the normal calming darkness that i usually saw, was color. and my bed... and the walls. I don't know what color looks like, but i do know it was an ugly color. But the most interesting thing i could see was a creature. it sat on my bed, sitting up like a well trained dog. it had a fox's body, but with a birds wings and a bucks antlers. It just sat there, staring at me. it was white. all white. slightly see through, and there was a faint glow to it.
Then after about a minute the creature stood up, jumped off my bed and then flew out of the window. I stood up quickly and ran to the window, But the creature was not there. it had disappeared. And right after that, everything melted back to my usual, calming, darkness.
