Chapter four

I woke up in the morning. At least i thought it was morning, over the years of not knowing what time of day it is i had kind of developed an internal clock, although sometimes it was wrong. I sat up in bed, my joints still in pain from everything that happened to me. I waited for someone to come screaming in the room with mop and slapping me in the head with it. but they never came. And because the mop lady never came, I sat on my bed for ten more minutes waiting for someone to come screaming in with a knife, then five more minutes waiting for someone screaming with dirty clothes and a pot full of burnt chili. that never happened, and that's when i seriously began to freak out. WHERE AM I?

I frantically got out of bed, and that's when i realized. I have a bed. I felt around the bed, until i found the bed side table. Then i remembered i was at the Washington's place. Now what am i supposed to be prepared for? I was prepared for the mop, I've developed special counter attacks. but what if they come in with a frying pan? or a extended fist? I took a deep breath, trying not to panic.

I Walked over towards the door and pushed it open, once it was open I quickly put my hands in front of my face. but nothing came flying at me. I slowly put my arms back at my sides and stepped out into the room, surprised at not being tripped by someone or slipping on the hallway covered in vegetable oil. All things i experienced in the orphanage. I carefully walked down the hallway, almost falling down the stairs. but this time there was something to grab onto, they had a railing. Lloyd had taken the railing off of the stairs at the orphanage, just to watch me struggle.

I used the railing to get downstairs, and once i was at the bottom i sighed in relief. I continued down a hallway, towards the smell of eggs and bacon. I had never smelled bacon that someone had actually tried to cook before. and eggs, that was a whole new delicacy. I walked down the hallway with a hand on the wall for balance in case there was something to make me fall, and then i entered the room where the amazing smells where strongest.

"Oh, you're awake. I was just going to come up with some food for you, but you can eat here," Martha said from somewhere in front of me.

Martha grabbed my hand and brought me over to a chair at a table, and then she put the food in front of me. The smells coming off of it where heavenly. The chair did not break once I sat down either, which had already made my day so much better. Martha put a fork in my hand and hten walked out of the room. I carefully used the non-broken fork to feel where the eggs where. then i cut a piece off, and put it in my mouth.

There was no food i had ever had better in the entire world. Good bye moldy raw potatoes, under-cooked bacon and broccoli that fell apart when you touched it. I had the food of my dreams. No, that's not right. there just gaining your trust to butter you up then ship you to their cousin on the other side of the world and live a life of slavery. even though slavery was abolished. That's not the point.

I set down my fork and stared, sightless, at the eggs. There must be poison inside. they don't want a child like me around, a child they have to pay for school for. I sat in my chair, un-moving. Waiting for something bad to happen. In my entire life, something bad had ALWAYS happened. I heard the footsteps in the hallway outside. Do i make a run for it? what if they have a long ranged weapon? I thought. The footsteps entered the room and stopped next to me. I tensed.

"We got you into the college!" George said happily.

It took me a moment to process it. Once i realized what he said, butterflies flew in my chest. College? school?! an EDUCATION?!?!? without knowing what i was doing, i stood up and hugged George.

*~*

George had gone to the school to pick up a uniform for me. he told me it would fit me, clothing that would fit me... Now that was even more a treat then actually cooked bacon. George had left an hour ago, so i was expecting him to be back soon. I had gotten halfway through my book, which i estimated to be about eight hundred pages long. It was interesting, and i feel like it would help me in college, now that i had some more basic American knowledge.

Then there was the problem of me being an Immigrant. an illegal immigrant. in america. There was some kind of citizenship quiz i had to take, either that or stay illegal and don't let anybody know. I decided to take the quiz, and Martha said she'd read the questions for me. Martha and i had taken the quiz half an hour ago, while George went to get me my school stuff. The worst part was, i never got my results back from the quiz. yet.

"I'm back!" George's voice echoed through the building.

I heard him come up the stairs and a moment later he sat down on the bed next to me.

"They said they where glad to have you, and they where setting you up with a student who will help you for the first couple days. I tried to convince them out of it, but for at least teh first week you will be attending a disabled kids class, Special Ed. its just for extra support," George said, i heard him set down a plastic bag full of stuff.

"Special Ed? really? I can do everything a normal kid could do!... Kind of," I said.

"I know, son, but its only for a little while, they where planning on it for a month at least," George said, and i heard some plastic moving.

At least i get to go to college. hopefully they don't make math easier, or something, that would be so humiliating. I sighed. would I ever be accepted as the kid that sure, is small and maybe a bit blind, but could still do things? Everyone I've ever met treats me like a defect, like a weakling who cant even walk down a hallway or sit in a chair. They act like i don't realize there is someone standing in front of me, when i can hear their breathing and sense their presence.

"So, here is your uniform. um... If you needed to know, its pretty ugly in my opinion," George said.

"Yes that helps. Now i picture everyone wearing brown and pink uniforms with short-shorts and super long ties that are green and pink," I said, frowning.

George laughed and i could not help but smile, it was a pretty funny image. I quickly stopped smiling, ...Emotions are the worst weakness... My fathers voice echoed.

"Alright, well here it is, you can put it on if you like. just to get a feel for it, call me when you need me. there is some more things in that bag you may need help with, school starts tomorrow," George said, and i felt the bed rise up as he stood up.

"Alright, d-George," I said, almost saying 'dad'.

George took no notice, i heard the door shut behind him. I grabbed the uniform. It was the most soft fabric i had ever felt. I ran my fingers down what i thought must be the sleeve of the shirt. it does not feel ugly. I thought, not feeling any huge ruffles or giant buttons. I took my shirt off and replaced it with the school uniform shirt. It felt... a bit tight, which was strange because i either had giant clothes that where the size of my entire body, or clothes that where only a couple sizes to big.

I remembered how George had taken my 'measurements', he said the school requested them so they could make the uniform exactly the right size. If they had the exact  length of my arms, and exactly how big my waist is... why is it tight? I decided it was better not to question it, so i put my original shirt back on and stuffed my uniform away. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.
