Chapter 14: Home
"What's that building for?" I pointed to the tall building ahead of us.
"That's stangle. That place mainly deals with unemployment."
"What about that one?" I pointed to the next one.
"Central Tower. They just finished building that. I'm not sure what they do yet. If you want to go somewhere that you know I can take you if you want."
We were walking on the sidewalk going... well, I don't know. Just somewhere.
"No. I'm fine with this." Wait didn't he say he wanted to see his parents. "Let's go see your parents. You wanted to see them right?"
"I do but we can do what you want first"
"Let's go. I don't have anything I want to do in my new life. If you want to see your parents lead the way." And plus I need something to do.
"No I can do that anytime we should do what you want."
I'm getting sick of this. "Look, I said we ca--" I spotted a familiar building to my right as we argued.
"What is it?" He turned around and looked at the building.
Faith school for girls. That was my elementary/middle school name. That school was hell to me. I thought it would have burned down by now. Guess not.
"Did you go there?"
"Yes"
"Do you want to look around?"
I didn't look away from the school. "No," I think he was saying something I'm not sure. All I can hear right now is screaming. It's getting louder and louder. Like it was right in my ear-torturing me.
"Are you alright?" He placed his hand on my back.
"Yeah," I shook my head. "Just remembered something." I did my best fake smile at him. "Lead the way."
I need to calm down. As we walked down the street I look up and saw the sun. It's still as bright as I remembered. The air is so clean too. I took a deep breath to take it all in. I had this feeling that someone was looking at me.
I looked to my left and saw Andrew smiling at me. "What?"
"I like--" he shook his head and looked away from me.
"Spit it out." I punched him in his arm.
"Your smile" he was rubbing his arm.
"What about it?"
"I like it"
Why is he always saying stupid shit like that? I looked forward so I wouldn't make eye contact with him. We went down this street called Bell Lane.
He pointed to the corner, "I would play soccer right over here with my friends all the time..... you would have been good friends with my friend John."
"I don't think I would," If they are all like him then it won't work out.
"Were here," He pointed to this small house.
It was red and white with a fence going around the house. The yard was small and there was a for sale sign out in the middle of it. It looked like there was another out on the window.
"Are you fuckin--," he jumped over the fence and ran to the front door. I slowly opened the door to the gate and watched him freak out.
He flipped the mat that was next to the door and yelled shit. The looked in the mailbox than slammed it shut. He put his hand on the top of the door to feel for something. He then kicked the door. I guess he didn't find what he was looking for.
He then placed his hands over his head and looked around. I was standing behind him waiting for him to come to his senses. He ran to the nearest window and looked thru it. Which means this is going to be a while. I sat down the steps as he ran around the house looking through the windows.
I sat there watching the birds fly and cats fighting over something. After a while he came back walking slowly, dragging his feet with his head facing down. He walked toward me and sat next to me on my left.
"Everything ... everything is gone. All of my toys, my trophies, my room, my memory's...... gone."
Man, he looks so sad. Should I do something? If I don't he might be moody like this for the rest of the day. What to do to cheer him up? Maybe something from the movies I use to watch. What do girls do to make guys stop being on their period? Think... Think... Oh! I got it. Without thinking I kissed his cheek.
His eyes were getting bigger and so was mine. Why the hell did I just do that?
"Why?' his face was getting red. "Why did you umm." While he was clearing his throat I stood up.
"Let's go" I need to change the topic. I was about to walk when he grabbed my arm.
"Why did you kiss me?"
Kiss... I didn't kiss him...I helped him. Yeah, let's go with that. "You're not sad anymore right?" I did my fake smile at him and moved my arm away from him.
While walking out of his yard he just kept staring at me. How do I know? I can feel him looking at me and he's right next to me. It doesn't take a genius to figure this out.
"Stop looking at me" I was looking straight trying to figure out where we were.
"Sorry," he said that but he still looking at me.
I'm getting really sick of this shit. I stomped on his foot. He screamed hopping up and down holding his foot.
"What was that for?"
"For looking at me dumb ass. I told you to stop." Once he put his foot back down we continued to walk but once again he kept looking at me. This motherfukcer has a staring problem.
I hit him upside his head. "Ouch.."
"You're supposed to lead the way jackass."
"Oh.. Right. Sorry." He began to lead the way I was now walking behind him.
After a while, we made it downtown. "Are you sure you don't want to see your parents Luna? Don't you want to go home?"
"No."
I do want to go home but not if I get sent back or I have to see my mother. I need to come up with a plan. We need to find a way to make a living here. We can't just steal everything all our lives. We might need to come up with new identities.
"We are working hard to fix the damage the storm caused." I know that voice.
I looked around but couldn't see him.
"Whats wrong?"
"Nothing." I shook my head.
"Senator I have a question." A different voice said.
I walked toward the voice and saw that it was coming from a TV. A store was selling TV's and my father's face was on every one of them.
He was standing behind a podium and the bitch of a mother was standing right next to him. Wrapping her arm with his. Smiling big as if she was so proud of him and actually gave a damn about anyone else other than herself.
"What are you going to do about the damaged roads in the city?"
The camera went back to my father. "We are going to try our best to raise money so that we can fix the roads that were damaged in any way. So that the people can live their lives normally once more."
Flashes began going off every second.
"Senator" a random man raised his hand. My father asked what was his question. "What about your daughter Rachel? How is she?" I bit my bottom lip as I heard my name.
I felt my heart dropped as he took a deep breath getting ready to answer the question. "She is good. I can't wait to see her."
Does he know I escaped? Another man raised his hand.
"What do you mean you can't wait to see her? Is she not staying with you two? You are her parents right?"
The press were now hounding him left and right with questions about me. I want him to answer all of them truly but I know that won't happen... With my mother around. Then right on cue, she stepped in front of him as security was getting the press to calm down.
"As you know my..." she looked at my father. "Our daughter is sick. So she's getting treatment at a private hospital."
LIES.
I walked away from the TV's not want to hear the poison from her mouth anymore.
"Hey wait," I heard Andrew yell this behind me.
I don't know where I'm going but I just can't be around 'that,' ever again... "home," I said to myself. I don't think I have a home anymore. I can't believe for a second I wanted to go back to a place I never had.
