Chapter 12: Freedom
It was still dark outside and the moon was right above us. The only sound that was heard were our footsteps in the grass and the sound of crickets. We have been walking for a while now and I'm starting to feel the pain in my leg.
"Hope we're going in the right direction." Andrew said.
"Me too," we went up on a hill. "Thank god." when we made it to the top we could see the city lights.
I sat down not wanting to walk anymore.
"It looks the same." Over the years I've been gone I barley really remember what the city looks like.
Andrew sat next to me. "It is... in some areas."
"Do you think this was a good idea?" I caused so many problems for my father and other people.
"I don't know. But it's too late to turn back now."
He's right. It time to move forward. I should just stop thinking about it. But we all know it's easier said than done.
"So, what do you want to do first?" Since I'm stuck with him I need to know what I'm goin to be doing for a while. Until I ditch him.
"If it's alright with you. I would like to see my parents."
"Okay. But it will be a while before we get to the city. I think it's best we call it a night." I felt my leg hurt a bit more.
"Oh! Look," he pointed to the sky.
I saw something fly quickly across it, "What is it?"
"I think it's a shooting star. Make a wish." I saw him close his eyes so I did the same.
I'm not sure what came over me to do this but I am. I wish I can be happy forever. Opening my eyes I saw the start was no longer there. This was stupid. Turning my head I saw Andrew looking at me.
"What?" Why does he keep looking at me?
"N-nothing."
I tried to stand up but in the process, my hand touched something. It's was Andrew's hand.
Quickly forcing myself to stand up. I lost balance due to the pain in my leg. Ready to hit the ground I closed my eyes waiting for the impact. It never came. I felt something wrapped around me. As I look down at what it was I felt my heart quicken.
"Are you okay?"
I was in his arms. What made it worse is that my dumb ass looked up at him and our nose touched.
"Ummm," I pushed him back and picked up my bag. "W-w-we need to find a place to stay the night."
"Okay"
It took a while for my heart to stop beating so fast as we walked a bit further towards the city.
"Is that a house or a barn?" He pointed to the left.
"I think it's both."
Walking closer to it we saw clothes hanging on a line, muddy shoes next to the door, a few horses and cows. The lights were off so they must be sleep. We can take some of their clothes to wear. As I thought this Andrew walked up to the front door.
"What are you--" I whispered as his hand got closer to the door. I grabbed it just in time. "What the hell. What are you thinking?"
"I was thinking about getting us a place to stay the night."
This guy just doesn't think before acting does he.
"You can't just knock on their door. What if the police have already talked to them about us."
"It's worth a shot." He went to know on the door again and I stopped him.
"So you're willing to risk your freedom on a five minutes place to stay," he lowers his hand.
I walked over to the clothes line and picked out a long dress shirt and jeans. I guess I'll take some shoes later. Looking back I saw Andrew looking at me as I carefully stuff the clothes in the bag.
"Are you just gonna stand there are you gonna pick out some clothes?"
"Luna that's stealing."
"So you're gonna meet your parents looking like that." He looked down at his clothes. They were mixed with sweat, blood, dirt and during corpse.
"Plus, if we get spotted they will automatically know we are from the Asylum with these and throw us back in. Do you want that?" I added.
He dragged his feet and picked out a shirt and jeans as well. I took it from him and placed it in the bag.
"Now what?"
That's a good question.
Okay so this is a barn so their has to be food. I saw a cow. Don't want to milk it or have time to kill it. Pig, again don't have time to kill it and how am I gonna fry it out in the woods. I walked over to the chicken coop and saw that majority of them were sleeping. Maybe scrambled eggs on a flat rock.
"Its better than nothing."
Slowly taking out a few eggs I placed them in a different part of the bag away from the clothes and needles. As I did this the chickens began to get loud.
"We gotta bail," he pulled my arm.
I saw the lights in the house turn on. Quickly closing the door to the chicken coop and picking up my bag we ran as fast as we could towards the city. We were a good distance away from them so we stayed by this little river. We were under this tree as we rest.
"Why did you take the eggs?"
I thought that was self explanatory. "To eat in the morning."
I looked up at the sky and saw the moon going down. Should I let my father know I'm out it or should I just stay hidden.
"Hay!" I continued to look at the sky.
"what?"
"What's your family like?" I know everyone's family is different but.. I wonder why he wants to see them so much.
"They are like typical parents. They embarrass me at the wrong times. They fight over who is right on politics. Some times like to go head to head in football to prove who's stronger or who still got it. We have eating contests and family game nights."
That all sounds nice. I don't have that. All I have is a father that works all the time and a mother that doesn't like me.
I learned how to cook spaghetti at a young age. My mother wouldn't feed me so I had to learn how. My parents would fight but not about politics but about money. I know football is a sport but they my mother wouldn't let sports in the house. I wish my family was more like his. If they were maybe I would have turned out differently.
"One year we went camping. Next we went to a resort. My mom dove off a small cliff into the ocean. We took a picture at the perfect moment she hit a bird." He laughed a little.
