Chapter 1: This can't be happening
"Mom, why am I here?" I looked at my mother who was standing in front of me. She looked as if she was about to cry. I hate that look. No child wants to see their mother cry.
"You're here because you're not well," she said as my father placed his arm around her. He tries to comfort her as she starts crying.
"What are you talking about? I'm fine. Nothing is wrong with me." I stepped towards them and they stepped back. "What has gotten into you guys?"
They looked at each other than at me, "Andrew, You're not fine. All of the doctors agreed you're unwell."
Why do they keep saying that? I'm perfectly fine. "I'm going home." I began to walk past them but my father stopped me by putting a bag on my chest.
"This is your new home, son."
Grabbing the bag I saw some of my belongings. My shirts, shoes, jackets, pants and even my underwear and hats. Everything was in there.. well except for my posters of .... maybe I shouldn't be talking about that. But they can't be getting rid of me, right?
"This can't be for real."
Looking up and I saw my parents walking away from me. I tried to run after them but the hallway was getting longer and longer as I continued to run. "Mom!" I reached my hand out to grab her.
"Goodbye, my little Dru."
She looked at me smiling as tears continued to fall from her eyes. Her hand slowly went up to her mouth and she blew a kiss.
Then everything went dark.
"Shit!"
I yelled as I sat up in my bed drenched in sweat. It's only a dream, it's only a dream. That's what I keep repeating as my eyes were closed. After calming down, I opened my eyes and took a deep breath.
In front of me was my roommate. I don't know his name. He was playing with his hands, twitching, and saying he's Batman and he needs to fuck Alfred.
"I guess it wasn't a dream."
I've been having the same damn dream for about three months. I thought my parents would have come for me by now.
"Boys, it's time for Dinner."
One of the nurses came in pushing a wheelchair. I helped her get my roommate into the chair. I didn't want to walk with them but I was hungry. Leaving my room, I always got this chill. It's not because I was cold or anything but because of how this place looked and smelled. It was an old rundown buildings we are all forced to stay in.
Well, I shouldn't really say rundown since the walls are still in tack and but the ceiling was in question. The doors were metal, heavy, and had one small window in them. There was no handle in the rooms just once to open them on the outside. To better phrase, if we wanted to leave our rooms once the door was closed, we couldn't. We can try but there was no way. Unless you could fit through the small window.
There were dust and blood everywhere. Some of the patients would use the bathroom in the halls and sleep in them. The staff here would either let them rot on the ground or make them disappear. Some of the Patients here were screaming at the top of their lungs even at night for someone to kill them or someone was actually killing them. Either way, they will end up dead. If not by the patients it will be from the doctors.
Let's be honest. That way you know it will be over soon.
As I walked closer to the front door of my building, I saw a lady at the front desk. She was eating chips and watching something on her phone. She didn't have a care in the world since she was protected by glass and barbwires. the only way through is if she unlocks the small window and climbs through. I'm not even kidding I saw her do that a few times.
I smiled at her as I passed her. I was told to show respect when I'm around adults. I know I just turned 18 and I can do what I want, but that's what my mother always taught me. Even though she wasn't here I didn't want to disappoint her.
The front doors flew open and the only thing I would see was darkness and the only thing I could smell was burning garbage.
Walking through the door I held my breath as we walked to the lunchroom. Looking around I saw some patients that had to be watched as they walk to the building in line. Let me tell you something. If you haven't been in trouble as much as the others here you have a bit more freedom, but that comes with a price.
You become a target.
That's one thing you don't want to be in this place. I find it best to stay hidden. If you can.
I walked through the lunchroom doors and a bright light flashed causing me to shut my eyes for a few moments. I was pushed and forced to continue to walk. Not by one of the patients but by a nurse. As my eyes readjusted I walked to where they were serving the food.
This place is always hectic. It's never the same but it's always crazy. Girls on the right side of the room and boys on the left. Those were the rules anyway, but no one followed them. I've been here for three months and found a lot of information about this Asylum.
"That's mine," some girl yells as she pulled a guys hair.
"Bitch that's mine," he makes her let go of his hair, throws food at her and then they began to fight.
I remember when I used to get excited about seeing a fight. Now I just want them to sit the fuck down. The male nurses here broke up the fight and dragged the two down the hall two different ways. The girl is going to the South building and the boy is going to the West.
I almost forgot to explain. This Asylum is divided into six buildings. North building, East building, South building, and West building. Those buildings are where the patient's sleep. There's the activity slash lunch room building that I am in right now, and last but certainly not least the 'fix' building. That building is where patients go when they go past their normal insanity and come out either heavily drugged or dead.
"Next."
I stepped forward. It was my turn to receive my food. I was handed a plate filled with weird looking food. There was a bowl with something moving in it. I thought it was soup but soup don't continue to boil or smells like shit. Looking closely something seems to be trying to crawl out. Next to it was a piece of old gray looking bread. There was no drink at all. But that didn't bother me since everyone keeps saying don't drink their water here it could kill you. I don't want to risk it. I smiled at the lunch lady.
"Thank you."
She grins at me as I walk away. Looking around for a seat I spot one on the far right side. I quickly walked over to it and sat down. I don't know when but I was holding my breath. As I began to relax a sigh escaped my lips. Picking up my fork and a hand slammed down on the table and pushed my food away.
"Look what we have here."
Some guy with a creepy smile was now two inches away from my face. He had short black hair, old cuts on his face and arms. He looked to be around my age but I could be wrong. His clothes here like mine. All one solid color, dirty gray.
The only difference was that he was ripped in some places. Mine was still new. Unless you didn't count the blood and random other stains that came with it. As I looked at him more you can tell he's been here at this asylum for a while.
"Why are you in this seat?"
Throwing my fork to the side, "What did it look like? I was going to eat."
He sat in front of me giving me a cold stare with his already creepy smile. I couldn't tell what he was going to do thanks to his black soulless eyes.
"Not anymore." His smile disappeared. "Now move."
His voice was now deeper than before. His eyes are darker than before as well. I didn't think black eyes could do that but I'm seeing it now and it sent a shiver down my spine.
"I said to move."
He stood up leaning over the table as he grabbed my shirt and then pushed me off my seat. I hit my head on the table behind me in the process. The guy picked up the fork I tossed aside earlier with that again creepy smile. He looked at it as if studying it. Holding the fork up and with force, he drives it down towards my chest. I moved just barely dogging it. He then raised the fork again but was stopped.
"Ben, that's enough," someone grabbed his arm and snatched the fork away.
"Yes," He stopped moving. After a few seconds of him staring at me, he turned around and faces someone.
He's completely calm, what the fuck. I couldn't get a good look at the person that stopped him. I stood up as Ben was walking away. Standing there was a girl. She had long blonde hair with green eyes. I couldn't help but get lost in her eyes. She looked me up and down.
"What?" She said with an attitude.
"Umm, thank you." That's all I could think of as I continued to look into her eyes.
She rolled her eyes and walked away. Who is she and why haven't I seen her before? I forgot where I was and looked around. Thankfully no one was looking at me. I took a step and my foot stepped in something cold. Looking down I saw my food on the ground. I didn't have that much of an apatite after that and decided to walk back to my room with two twin sized beds.
My room was a little different from the halls. there were dust and dirt everywhere but I guess it was new since there was no blood or writing on the walls. I didn't mention this earlier but there used to be writing all over the place. But for some reason, they put paint over everything.
While laying down on my bed I couldn't help think about that girl. Her hair was a little messy and of course she was wearing these patients uniforms they give us. She doesn't seem like the rest of the people here. Her eyes were so beautiful.
'Knock' knock' 'knock'
I look towards the door and saw someone I've never seen before. He had brown short hair. He looked to be my age and hight. Wait, why is a patient outside my door? I thought only the staff could open doors here.
"Who do you side with?" He was leaning on the door asking me this.
"Side with? What are you talking about?"
He walked into my room and slammed the door behind him. Great, now I'm stuck with him.
"Answer me."
Why does everyone want to fight here? I stood up from my bed and faced him. "Neither."
His face slowly showed a smile. He pats my shoulder, "That will pass for now."
'Knock' knock' My door slowly opened. Standing there was a girl with long black hair and dark green eyes.
"Ken, it's time to go."
Ken looks at me then back at the girl. "Alright. I'll meet you there Beth."
She crossed her arms and walked down the hall leaving my door wide.
"What's your name?" Ken asked me.
"Andrew."
He held out his hand, "Ken."
I shook his hand.
"Look, I'm sorry if I scared you. I just needed to know who was going to be attacking me soon." He said as he began to walk out of the room.
"What are you talking about?" I walked after him. He turned around with a confused look on his face.
"You don't know?"
I shook my head no.
"There's a war going on between south and west buildings."
I heard someone screaming down the hallway. 'It's done, it's done.' The person ran past us. It was a little girl. Is the war starting? Is this what he's talking about?
"Looks like it's time." He cracked his knuckles with a big smile. "Are you in or out?"
He looked at me raising an eyebrow. More and more people were running down the halls. Some were saying freedom others were just looking for someone to fight. I want to leave this place. If this is my chance than I'm taking it. I want to go home.
I looked at Ken, "I'm in."
We ran down the hall and it was like a wild party was going on here. Patients were climbing the walls, fighting, screaming, eating what I hope isn't human. I don't know how but some were even on the ceiling and yes some were being hanged from their too. I was following Ken as I saw everything play out.
We finally made it outside, "Where are the nurses and doctors?" I haven't seen any of them since dinner started.
"Sleep, dead, who cares. We have to get out of here."
We were outside of the building but we were still trapped. There was a giant gate blocking our way out. As we approached the gate we shook, kicked, pulled at it and nothing worked.
"Fuck," Ken kicked the gate.
A bell goes off from the building. He starts to panic and walks back and forth.
"What do we do?"
When I asked this he stopped moving. He looked at the ground and began digging next to the gate.
"Stop you're not a damn dog." I tried to grab him a bit he pushed my hand away.
He continued to dig, "You got a better idea?" He yelled at me.
I looked back at the building then helped him dig. We dug as fast as we could. We almost had a good size hole, big enough for us to escape through when it started to rain.
"Damn it."
It's was coming down hard making it even harder for us to dig. Our hole was now a puddle.
"Now what?"
We stopped and looked at the hole for a moment. When Ken was about to say something we saw a light shine on us.
"Fuck!!"
We looked back and saw a bunch of nurses running towards us. Ken tried to force himself through the muddy hole. I tried to help him by pushing him down through it.
"Time to go to sleep."
A few of the nurses pulled me away from Ken and pinned me down. I tried to fight but it wasn't working. I could hear Ken screaming at them. I saw a nurse coming towards me with a needle.
"Just relax."
Again I tried to fight with all of my strength but couldn't. They even add a few more nurses to hold me down. I eventually felt a sharp pain in my neck. Then they slowly let me go.
I stood up and rubbed my neck, "what the hell did you do to me?" No one answered. I looked around and saw they were doing the same to Ken. I need to help him. I took my first step towards him and felt my legs get weak.
"Just relax."
One of the nurses tried to touch me and I swung my now numb arm at them, "Get away from me."
I took another step and fell to the ground. I tried to speak but nothing but mumbling came out. Looking around I saw the nurses try and grab me, I used what left of my strength and try to wiggle away. Of course, that didn't work. Once again they all pinned me down but this time put straps around my chest, arms and legs binding them together.
They then lift me up and began walking. I think they are going to take me to my room. On our way there my vision began to get blurry than at some point I was out.
I began to wake up as I felt something cold on my body. I tried to move but my arms and legs were strapped down. I think I'm in a chair. My eyes finally open. The first thing I saw was a bright light causing me to close them again.
"Fuck!!"
After my eyes readjusted I looked around and saw a big window, a few other chairs with open straps on them, blood on the floor and what looked like doctors around a table. I think there is someone on the table.
"Doctor, he's awake." Everyone turned to me.
"Get his files."
" Yes, sir." The woman walked out of the room as the doctor walked over to me.
I looked at the table he came from and saw Ken twitching.
"What did you do to him?"
He looked at Ken then back at me. "I gave him his medication he refused to take."
The door opened and in came the woman with a folder. "Here you are, doctor."
He takes the folder and opens it. "Andrew right?" He looked at me for an answer but he didn't get one. "This is your first act here at White Wing." He closed the folder. "Since this is your first act here we are only going to give you some pills to take to calm your voices in your head."
"I don't have voices in my head."
The woman takes the folder, then once again left the room.
"Don't be afraid. They all say that at first but you all have them."
"You're fucking insane. Let me out" I tried to get out of the chair. The straps felt like they were getting tighter and tighter.
"Calm down Andrew. You will only have to take them once a week."
I noticed that the remaining people were now surrounding me. I look towards the table and saw that Ken stopped moving, his mouth and eyes were opened and looking at me. "Why is he like that?"
The doctor pats my leg, "Don't worry about him." He opened a bottle and took out two pills. He nods to one of the people in the room. My head was then forced back and my mouth forced open. "You will thank me for this later." He said this and dropped the pills in my mouth with a little bit of water.
One of them placed their hands on my mouth while the other rubs my neck and pinched my nose forcing me to swallow. They let me go, the water didn't help the pills. They were both equally disgusting.
"This is all to help you." He smiled at me.
After a while, I no longer felt the need to fight or say anything. They brought in a wheelchair, unbuckle my straps and placed me in the chair.
....
I don't remember what happened next but somehow I was in my room looking at the ceiling counting my fingers. I guess the medicine was wearing off. I remember I was still counting and I was at 284.
I slowly sat up as my head felt all fuzzy. it wasn't normal how my head felt. I couldn't think of a word other than that to describe it. Trying to shake it off. I looked at the clock in the hallway and it said that it was 10:00. Dinner is always at 8. I wonder if it's still night or not.
"You're finally up."
I turned towards the voice and saw my roommate looking at me.
"You've been out for two days."
"What?"
"They were so focused on you, they forgot to give me my 'medicine' so thanks for that," he said with a smile.
My stomach started to growl. He picked up his pillow and hands me something. "Take it. I already eat today." It was a small loaf of bread.
"How did you get this?"
"Don't worry about it." He said as he wiggles the bread a little.
I stood up and took the bread from him. I know the bread is old and gray but it looks good. Sitting back down on my bed I began devouring it.
"It's not going anywhere." He said while laughing.
After I finished eating the bread, I saw that his hand was out. "Andy."
I shook his hand, "Andrew."
This feels so weird. We've been roommates for three months and we know nothing about each other. This is the first time we have ever spoken to each other.
"So why are you here?" he asked.
"My parents thought I needed help." I still remembered my mother's face. She looked scared and hurt that day they left me here.
"Same here. I kept hearing people talking when I was alone in my room. My parents searched the house and nothing." He laughed a little. "That was two years ago. They thought I was sick and placed me in here. If only they would have checked the basement. My room was on the bottom floor... oh well." he explained.
"I heard a girl screaming every time I would go to sleep." I looked down at my hands, they were shaking.
"Was it the same scream or different ones?" He asked me while playing with his sleeve.
"Different. Why?"
"It could've been a serial killer killing woman around your house."
I laughed a little, "If I would have said that they would have thought I was even sicker." I said jokingly.
"Well there crazy for putting us in here. There's nothing wrong with us."
"Can I ask you something?"
"What?" He stopped playing with his sleeve.
"Why were you acting the way you did when I got here?" He stood up and looked out the small window in the door.
"We're good." He looked at me and sat back down on his bed. "I was drugged a lot. I was trying to escape almost every night. If I wasn't doped up I was sleeping it off and trying to escape."
Well, that explains a lot. He was either always acting crazy or sleeping when I was here.
"You were drugged this time. Why?"
I shook my head, "I don't really remember." Everything from the girl I saw at dinner to waking up in my room was a blur.
"Well, when you do don't do it again. That just gives them an excuse to drug you more. Try something different each time that way you know what to do and not to do."
"Alright, thanks," I laid back down.
"What are roommates for?"
"Let's just get some rest." With those words, I went back to sleep again dreaming about my parents.
Adria POV.
"Donner, why can't you just kill her already?" I threw my pillow.
"It's complicated Princess." He said in the room next to me.
Boys and girls were not allowed to share rooms. Donner was my twin older brother.
"What's so complicated about killing someone?" I complained through the hole in the wall between us.
"She's not just someone, she's Luna. Ben is like always around her."
I heard a bed squeak as he talked with me through the hole. He has a roommate, I don't. I killed her a few months ago.
"Why don't you just get some rest?" He said not wanting to talk anymore.
"Why don't you kill Luna already?"
I heard him take a deep breath. "Goodnight, Adria."
I hit the wall, "Donni." I banged on the wall he didn't answer me when I called his name. "Pussy," I climbed on my mattress played with my hair.
My brother Donner and I have been here for five years. We're not supposed to be in here, but here we are. Five years ago our parents killed each other in front of us. They tried to do a scene from Mr. and Mrs. Smith but it didn't work out. We tried to tell people that but they thought we were making it up.
They said we were going insane because of the loss of our parents so they sent us to the Asylum. We stay in the West building. My brother quickly became the most feared person in the West building next to me. He was the boss and I was the princess. He would give me anything I wanted.
Everything was finally feeling normal as we lived our new life here until I saw Luna. She's one of the patients like us the only difference is that she runs the South building. I don't care why she's here or how long she's been here all I know is that she doesn't deserve to live.
She tormented me at school so many times I have six diaries field with things she's done to me. I would have been dead by now but my brother saved me. He's the reason I'm still alive now. I tried taking my life a few time before the Asylum.
Sometimes I wish he didn't stop me so I didn't have to go through this hell hole. Since I noticed she was here my life went from almost feeling normal to pissed off all the time. I couldn't sleep at all. All I could think about was killing Luna and getting the hell out of here.
The bell went off and it was time for breakfast. I walked to the lunch room with Donner. He looked down at me with a confused expression on his face.
"You don't look so good."
"Bite me."
He stood in line to get our plates while I found us a seat. Looking around I found some in the back away from these people. I walked over to them and sat down. Waiting for my brother I looked around the room to distract myself from the thought of him taking so damn long. Then I saw Luna walk into the lunchroom with Ben. I was about to stand up when someone grabbed my arm.
"Not now," it was my brother.
"But when?"
"Soon, for now just eat."
He pushed my plate over to me and I sat back down. As he sat next to me I couldn't help but watch her every annoying move. She and her south building rats cleared out a table in the middle of the room and sat there talking.
"This is a lunchroom you're supposed to eat here," I said in a low tone.
"Relax," Donner eat some of his soup.
"Suck a dick."
"Adria language."
I rolled my eyes at him and continued to watch Luna and her crew.
"You know if you think about it. This place is like an Asylum and a prison put together." He said as he watched the doctors and nurses walk around the lunch room.
"But in prison, you could have bail or parole. Here you automatically get the life and a death sentence." I said making him stop talking.
I looked at Luna making sure she knew I was watching her. When she realized I was she smiled and waved at me causing her rats to look at me as well. I smiled back to show that I wasn't intimidated she laughed and so did her rats.
"Kill her," I whispered to Donner and walked off.
"You should eat princess," I heard him say behind me.
"I'm not fucking hungry," I yelled back at him as I walked out of the room.
