Chapter Twenty Eight
Over the next two weeks, Tira recovered from her injuries. She'd broken out with another fever again after a few days, but Toya caved and accepted help from Kurogiri and Giran. They both offered to watch over her and tend to her when he couldn't. Between the three of them and their around the clock care, they got Tira back to health. Her color had returned, she had her strength back and she didn't feel pain when Toya touched her.
Now that she was feeling better, Tira was growing bored, Dabi was busy with The League but wouldn't tell her what they were up to. He was out till late in the night. Kurogiri and Giran made sure to bring her meals throughout the day but she was worried about her twin. She didn't like his new friends or his goal.
"What's wrong, little one?" Giran's voice shook her from her moping as she stared off into space worrying about Toya.
She jumped, startled by his voice and glanced up to see the familiar man with the pale greasy hair. Though she knew he was a criminal now, she still liked him the most of anyone else she'd met within The League. Still nervous around everyone here, she chewed on her bottom lip, hesitant to respond.
Sensing where the pale girl's thoughts lingered, Giran smiled gently at her, "worried about your brother?"
Tira paled and stared up at him with wide eyes. How did he know?! "Wh-what? N-no, you're mistak-."
Giran took a step closer and gently pat her on the head though he knew she couldn't feel it, "don't worry, your secret is safe with me."
"Why are you helping us so much?" Tira asked him curiously.
Giran smiled, "years ago, I was meeting up with a contact to obtain some...items to sell... from a hospital...and I spotted something very interesting. The number two hero with what looked like the bloody corpse of a little girl with pretty white hair." He gently lifted a lock of her hair before letting it fall. "I was curious, I did a little digging, and found out a bit more about her, and her brother and I just had this funny feeling their circumstances would put one or both of them in my line of work and I made a little promise to myself."
"What's that?" Tira asked him with a sniffle, she remembered that day vividly, the day she'd died, it had only been a short time but it was a terrifying experience that still occasionally haunted her dreams.
"If they ended up in my line of work, I'd make sure they had someone on their side." Giran offered her the plate of food, it didn't look appetizing and she shook her head. "I'm not as good of a cook as your brother or Kurogiri, sorry about that." He chuckled.
"I-it's okay, I'm not very hungry." Tira tried to spare his feelings but her stomach let out a tiny grumble.
Giran chuckled, "you know, I have a craving for some burgers and I know a place close by that has amazing burgers and I heard they had some pretty impressive strawberry shortcake..."
Tira perked up a little at the mention of strawberry shortcake.
"Shall we?" He offered her a hand up.
Tira hesitated, "is it okay?"
"It's fine." Giran reassured her.
Tira took his hand and allowed him to pull her to her feet. He paused at the door as he realized she might be recognized as many heroes were searching for her right now. Noticing his hesitation, Tira paused and threw him a curious look.
"Perhaps you should put on a jacket." He suggested.
Tira nodded, suddenly feeling a little anxious as she realized it was because people were probably looking for her. She grimaced as she thought of her father, mother and younger siblings and how worried they must all be about her. She didn't have her phone and hadn't been able to leave any of them a note. Toya wouldn't let her send them a message to let them know she was okay. After pulling a hooded sweater on, Giran relaxed and offered her his arm to escort her.
It had been the first time she'd really gotten to leave Toya's room on her own and her first time leaving the lair. They kept to back alleys avoiding the streets and after a few blocks they found themselves at a hole in the wall bar. There weren't any other patrons at any of the other tables and appeared to only have one person working, a young man in his early twenties behind the bar. Giran led her to a table near the back and politely pulled her chair out for her.
Once they were seated, the young man behind the bar came over to their table leaned forward and whispered something to Giran who whispered something back. The young man nodded before taking a step away so he wasn't so close he looked to Tira. "What can I get you to drink?"
Tira shrank a little, worried, "do you have strawberry milk?"
Giran smiled.
The young man taking her order paused for a moment, "yeah, I can make that for you. I'll be back with a menu." He turned and walked away.
"Aren't you getting anything?" Tira asked Giran curiously.
"I'm boring and get the same thing every time." He chuckled before reaching into his breast pocket. He pulled out a cellphone and slid it across the table to her.
Tira looked to him curiously.
"It's just a burner phone, it can't be traced, so it's safe enough if you wanted to check in with someone. Just don't reveal our location, please."
Tira hesitated for a moment before picking up the phone. "Do I have to stay here?"
"I'd feel more at ease if you did. We're not in the safest area."
Tira relaxed a little as she realized it wasn't because he didn't trust her. He was more concerned with her safety. She dialed her father's cell phone and waited a moment. He picked up after a few rings.
"Who is this?" He growled, he sounded much more aggravated than usual and for a fleeting moment she was brought back to her childhood trauma.
It took her a moment to shake herself out of it, "D-Dad?"
"Tira! Where are you? Are you hurt? Are you safe?"
Tears welled in her eyes, not that she could feel them. He sounded so worried. "I'm safe...Nii-chan and his friends are taking good care of me..."
Giran looked to the pale sickly girl with a sorrowful look. It broke his heart to see her look so upset. He knew her brother meant well and that his love for her and his need to protect her from all those who had done her harm made him go a little over the top. He could sympathize with them both after seeing where they'd come from and how bad it had been. Tira internalized her trauma and withdrew, Toya was the opposite, he turned his trauma into an explosive force to keep his sister safe.
"Where are you? I'll come get you."
Tira bit her lip, "I'm going to stay with Nii-chan."
Her father was quiet.
"Is that okay?" She asked softly.
"If that's what you want...I just want to know you're safe." Her father's voice seemed to break a little.
"I am safe."
"Alright...I won't try to separate you two, but try to come home for dinner sometime...your brothers and sister are worried...we all want to see you soon..." Her father said softly, he was starting to panic thinking she was going to slip away, "Tira?"
"I'll try." Tira sniffled.
"I love you." His voice cracked.
Tira smiled, "I love you too, Dad."
"It's okay for you to love your brother...I know it seemed like I wasn't on board before, but if that's what makes you happy...it's okay...so please don't feel like you have to run away...I won't stop you two..." He sounded like he was in pain. "Just come home, please."
"I'll try to talk to Nii-chan." Tira replied as tears streamed down her cheeks. Giran made a motion for her to wrap it up. She nodded, "I have to go, Dad...I'll try to contact you soon."
"Tira, don-." She hung up cutting off his words not sure she could handle him begging her not to go.
She handed the phone to Giran. "...thanks..."
"Interesting that you'd call your abuser." Giran noted with a frown.
Tira bowed her head, "it's complicated."
Giran smiled, "much in your life is. I take it Dabi takes after your father a bit, they both love you, in different ways, and struggle with how to express it." He tucked his phone back into his pocket.
Tira nodded. She knew that, and she knew it was hard for Toya to forgive their father as she had done, because he left. He didn't get to see for himself that their father was trying so hard to make amends. The server returned with strawberry milk for Tira and a beer for Giran. He handed Tira a menu and disappeared again.
Tira sipped at her strawberry milk and looked over the menu. She noticed Giran wasn't drinking his drink and thought it somewhat strange. There was a strawberry shortcake on the menu, she glanced at it and wondered if it would be okay to just order that. Giran noticed where she'd stopped at on the menu and chuckled softly to himself.
The server returned after a bit and looked to Tira. "What can I get you?"
Tira looked nervously to Giran then back to the server before bowing her head, "strawberry shortcake."
Giran chuckled. The server took the menu without a word and went to put in their order before returning to the bar and getting on his phone to play some game. Giran pulled another phone out of his inside jacket pocket and sent a quick text as Tira glanced around at the various pictures on the walls. There was a random assortment of street signs and posters with no rhyme or reason behind it. Nothing seemed to go together.
After a few minutes Giran got to his feet, startling Tira as he'd moved so suddenly. He offered the pale girl a smile and gently ruffled her hair, "enjoy your date, little one." He turned and walked toward the door as it opened.
Tira's heart stuttered in her chest as she spotted Toya framed in the doorway. His teal eyes found her instantly and his body relaxed. He must have been worried to find her missing. Giran gave Toya a pat on his shoulder before taking his leave.
"Sorry." Tira blurted once Toya reached the table.
Toya frowned before dropping into Giran's abandoned seat with a sigh. He ran his hands through his dark hair, "why are you apologizing? I should be apologizing, sorry for keeping you cooped up."
Tira smiled, "it's okay, Nii-chan." She blushed as she realized her slip of the tongue.
Toya reached across the table and captured her hand in his. Her heartbeat quickened as he slowly lifted her hand to his lips and placed a kiss to the back of her hand. He smiled as an endearing blush spread across her cheeks. "Now that you're feeling better, am I allowed to tease you?"
"N-no." Tira protested, "it's mean to tease people."
Toya smiled.
The server returned not seeming the least bit surprised to see Giran was gone. He placed two strawberry shortcakes in front of them and walked away without a word. Tira looked to her twin nervously, she was worried about telling him that she'd called their father.
"What's wrong?" Toya frowned as he noticed her smile starting to falter.
"I have to tell you something." Tira pulled her hand away and folded her hands together in her lap, withdrawing into herself.
Toya waited.
"...I called Dad...to let him know I was safe..." She flinched expecting Toya to get upset, but chanced a glance when nothing happened. Toya looked hurt by her reaction.
"I'm sorry, for losing my temper before..." He leaned back in his chair to give her some space, "do you want me to take you back?"
Tira pursed her lips, "not if you're not coming with me." She wrung her hands together in her lap nervously, "Dad said he wouldn't stop us...we can be together...and go home..."
Toya felt a tight pain in his chest, he didn't like seeing her upset, but he couldn't forgive their father, "...I'll think about it...and maybe in a few days, I can wrap my head around him being capable of changing...we can talk about it then..."
Tira smiled, he was willing to listen. "Thank you, N-." She blushed again as she realized she'd been about to call him Nii-chan, "Dabi." She corrected herself.
Toya dipped his finger in some of the whipped cream atop his strawberry shortcake and dropped a dollop on the tip of her nose causing her to let out a cute squeal. He delighted in the sound of her innocent laughter as she giggled and retaliated and smeared the entire glob of whipped cream atop her strawberry shortcake on the side of Toya's face.
As he reeled back with laughter to wipe his face the server approached the table and dropped a cannister of whipped cream in front of Tira before walking away without Toya noticing. Tira giggled as she picked up the cannister while Toya wiped the whipped cream off his face. He managed to wipe it all away and turned to say something to his twin only to find the tip of a whipped cream cannister in his face. He wasn't quick enough to dodge and got covered in whipped cream.
The server laughed behind the bar.
"Alright, now you're in trouble." Toya laughed and attempted to wrestle the cannister away from her.
Tira giggled and tightened her grip accidentally pressing on the nozzle again spraying them both with whipped cream. The server behind the bar lost it and ducked under the bar to hide his laughter.
