Realizing it would be easier to find somewhere safe for them to stay and hunt down Tira's abuser if they returned to the city, Toya pulled his sweatshirt over Tira's head and kept her hair concealed. He managed to find a hat and some food at a small convenience store in the rural town they'd hidden out in for the night and most of the afternoon. Despite her protests, Toya carried Tira on his back. Since she was barefoot, he didn't want her on her feet and he knew she'd be able to fall asleep easily if she was on his back, she still needed rest.
They managed to keep a low profile during their travels and avoided attracting attention. By dinnertime they'd made it to a decent sized city not to far from the Asylum. It didn't take long for him to find a decent looking hotel that was a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. He paid for the room in cash knowing better than to do anything that could be traced.
Tira had been in and out of sleep all day. Once they got to their room Toya gently set her on the bed. Her eyes fluttered open as he swept a soft blanket around her. She felt a fleeting moment of panic as she realized she didn't recognize her surroundings but relaxed the moment she saw Toya. He looked like he was getting ready to go out.
"Nii-chan, where are you going?" She shakily sat up; she didn't have much strength after years of wasting away.
"I'm going to get us some new clothes and maybe some stuff to disguise our appearances a little." She could sense the deceit in his words, it wasn't a lie but there was something he was trying to keep from her.
"Is that it?" She asked curiously.
"Maybe I'll find you a coloring book and some ridiculously cute pastry you'll try to refuse to eat." He teased her with a smile. He was trying to avoid telling her more.
Tira smiled as she remembered the kitty cat pastry from the café Toya used to work at. "No, it can't be too cute." She pouted causing him to smile.
"I'll see what I can do. You stay here and rest. I'll be back soon."
"Nii-chan..." Tira's soft voice made him hesitate on his way to the door. He turned and felt his heart flutter in his chest as he noticed her looking somewhat shy and picking at the corner of the soft blanket that had fallen off of her when she sat up. She wanted to ask him something but felt too guilty.
Toya smiled and moved toward the bed. He lightly shoved her causing her to topple back onto the bed with a cute squeak. A chuckle escaped him as he draped the blanket over her again before sitting beside her on the bed. He tenderly streamed his fingers through her silken snow-white hair, "I'll wait till you fall asleep."
A faint blush claimed her cheeks and he realized he hit the nail on the head. She'd wanted to ask him to stay but felt too needy. His sweet sister was far too easy to read. He noticed she didn't look particularly tired as he continued trying to soothe and comfort her.
"I want to ask you something." He said softly.
Her breathtaking steel grey eyes flicked upward meeting his gaze, "what is it?"
"I don't want to upset you, but I have to know." He leaned forward and kissed the top of her head, "why did you do it?"
Tira felt tears welling in her eyes, she knew exactly what he meant. She turned away too ashamed to look him in the eye and admit to how much of a coward she was that she'd been willing to abandon him to escape. "I'm sorr-."
He pressed a finger to her lips and shook his head, "you never have to apologize, for anything. I just want to know why. What did that bastard talk to you about? What changed?" Tira tried to roll onto her side to hide herself but let out a soft gasp as Toya held her back. He lovingly wiped away her tears. "I will always love you, Tira. I will always be on your side. Please tell me."
Tira bit her lip, "he was going to force me into a quirk marriage...like mom..."
Toya felt something inside of him snap, his rage spiraled out of control. He managed to keep calm on the outside but inside was a raging storm. Tira gripped his hand in hers sensing his spiraling rage.
"Toya...I think he regrets it-." Tira tried to pipe up in an attempt to defend their father who'd visited her nearly every day for the past three years, he'd begged for her forgiveness on many occasions and often talked to her about how things would be once she was well enough to leave. He'd even brought up finding a way to get Rei to come home too, so they could be a family again. It sounded like a dream come true, that was all Tira had ever wanted.
Toya cut her off, "he will regret it." His cryptic words sent a shiver down Tira's spine.
She squeezed his hand trying to bring him back to his senses, "please, Nii-chan, he just wants us all to be a family again."
Toya saw the hopeful look in her eye. He didn't want to dash her hopes but he knew there was no way in hell he'd ever be able to go back to 'family' life with their monster of a father. The Todoroki Family was broken and the only way to fix it was to get rid of the problem.
Tira shuddered and her stomach churned unpleasantly as she sensed a darkness within her twin. She was worried for him. "Nii-chan?" Her voice shook.
Toya realized he was upsetting her and tried to calm himself down. "Sorry. That sounds nice." His tone was somewhat dry and unenthusiastic.
"Don't you want us all to be a family again?" Tira asked him curiously.
"You're all the family I will ever need but if it will make you happy, perhaps it's worth a try." Toya wanted nothing more than for her to be happy, but he could not forgive her abusers. They would all pay, someday. Tira sensed his lie, he wasn't willing to try.
"Nii-chan..." Her voice began to drift away, she'd worn herself out getting all worked up over things she could do nothing about.
Toya waited until she was sound asleep before sneaking out of the room. It was time to figure out the identity and location of her most recent tormenter and make him suffer.
Meanwhile, at the Endeavor Hero Agency, Enji prepared another search party. His assistant agreed to stay near the phones and call him the moment she heard anything no matter how far fetched the tip might be. He sent his sidekicks to scour the city and the nearby cities before taking off on his own. They'd found Toya's discarded cell phone outside of the asylum. He'd broken in and knocked out one of the orderlies but after trying to smooth things over, the orderly said he wouldn't press charges. There hadn't really been any damage done so the facility wasn't too upset, they were more concerned about Tira's well-being.
If he could just find them, perhaps he could reason with Toya, and get both of his children to come back home. The scolding for his inappropriate feelings toward his sister could come later he just needed to make sure they were both safe and get them home. After a few hours into his search just after the sun had set, his assistant called his mobile device.
"Sir, a hotel employee called the anonymous tip line he said he saw two people matching the description on the broadcast, I'm forwarding you the location now." His assistant was calm and collected and it helped him stay calm and collected though inside he was at war with himself. He blamed himself for all that was happening and just hoped he could get to them before it was too late.
He hurried to the location sent to his mobile device. It wasn't too far. It led to a hotel that seemed somewhat hidden within the city. The front desk clerk jumped to attention when he noticed the number two hero, Endeavor had just entered the building.
"Ah! Endeavor! What are you doi-?"
"Someone called about the missing persons." Endeavor cut him off he didn't have time for fanboy nonsense or useless babble.
"Ah, that was me-."
"Where are they?"
The young man behind the counter stumbled all over himself, "I called because the chick didn't look like she was doing too good and I thought maybe the dude had kidnap-."
"Where?!" Enji growled.
The young man yelped and prattled off a room number. Enji didn't hear anything else he tried to yell after him and bolted for the stairs to get to the room.
Tira woke with a start as she heard a loud knock at the door. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and hesitated. Maybe Toya had wound up loading himself down with too much stuff and didn't have a hand free to get to the door. She moved toward the door and frowned as she realized there wasn't a peephole for her to look through. Hesitantly she opened the door.
"Tira!" Her father's cry of relief startled her.
Instinctively she pulled back and flinched. Enji wrapped his arms around her glad to see her on her feet and clarity in her eyes. Tira felt nothing as her father hugged her tight. Her body was still numb. She tensed up and panic gripped her, was he going to take her back? As terror consumed her, she tried to pull away but she was far too weak to struggle out of his hold.
"It's alright." Her father hugged her. "We're going home." He glanced around the room and realized he didn't see his eldest son anywhere, "where's your brother?"
Tira froze up, she wasn't sure she could speak to her father. Even though he'd been trying to atone for years she couldn't help that her body wanted to tense in his presence and she wanted to flinch every time he raised his voice. She wanted to forgive him; she knew he'd been trying to make amends but she just couldn't let go of the fear she felt in his presence even though she knew she couldn't feel anything anymore. He couldn't hurt her anymore, not physically, she could only feel Toya's touch. It was probably due to brain damage from when she'd tried to overdose and drown herself, her brain had been without oxygen for too long. Damage was bound to happen.
"Tira?" Her father looked down at her worried as she clammed up. "Where is Toya?" Enji was surprisingly remaining calm. It seemed his weekly talks with an anger management specialist were helping. "He's not in any trouble, I talked to the facility, they're not going to press charges, it's okay, we can all go home."
Tira so desperately wanted to believe his words but she knew, Toya wasn't willing to try and if she had to choose between Toya and the rest of her family, she'd always choose Toya. He was her fearless protector, the only person she always felt safe with, her asylum.
Realizing it might be too early for her to speak to him, Enji tried a different approach, "do you know where he went?"
She shook her head.
"Alright, did he say exactly when he'd be back?" He asked again trying to keep his voice calm to avoid panicking her further.
She shook her head again.
He realized her entire body was trembling, it was taking her a lot of effort to stay on her feet from years of being catatonic and barely moving. "You rest, we'll wait for him together." He made a move to help her to the bed but drew back as she shied away from him. It hurt that his daughter was so scared of him, it hurt even more to think of all the awful things he'd done to put her in this position, to break her this much. He'd never atone but he was determined to spend however long it took trying to atone.
