Chapter Three

Toya & Tira- 7 Years Old

Fuyumi- 6 Years Old

Natsuo- 3 Years Old

Enji returned home to chaos. The training hall had been destroyed. Natsuo wouldn't stop crying. Fuyumi was on some kind of hunger strike, refusing to eat until she knew her big sister was okay. Toya had locked himself in his room. Rei was beside herself trying to take care of all the upset children while fighting with her own emotions. In an attempt to help, Enji tried to tackle the hunger strike as it seemed to be the biggest concern but he had to admit defeat as he realized all his yelling was doing was making matters worse as Fuyumi was now crying and not eating.

Giving up on that problem he tried to get Toya out of his room. He knocked twice and called for his son in a stern voice. Rei stood at the end of the hall holding a still crying Natsuo and watched Enji warily. He wasn't known for his patience and she had a feeling things were going to get ugly with Enji's temper and Toya's fragile state of mind.

"Toya! Get out here! Now!" Enji roared as he lost his patience after a few more 'nice' attempts.

Rei flinched as Enji tore the door off its hinges. The moment the door came off there was a raging inferno as bright blue flames exploded out of Toya's bedroom. Before Enji had a moment to react, ice began to encase the flames slowly snuffing them out before the fire could spread. Enji glanced down the hall to a very tired Rei who appeared to have been putting fires out all day, literally and figuratively.

Natsuo had finally stopped crying as Enji had nearly been engulfed in Toya's blue flames. He was too worn out from his day of screaming to stay awake any longer and fell asleep in his mother's arms. Rei looked to her husband, her gaze cold and unfeeling.

"Are you going to tell me how our daughter is doing?" She asked stiffly.

"I told you on the phone, she'll be fine." Enji remarked as he set the door down and made a move to step into Toya's room. It was pitch black inside.

As Enji took a step forward he was nearly blinded by bright blue flames as they flared to life atop Toya's head of crimson hair like bright horns of hellish blue fire. The eerie sight of Toya standing in the middle of the dark room gave him pause.

"Your behavior is unacceptable-." Enji began in a stern voice but cut off as Toya hurled a flurry of blue fire at him. "Toya!"

"YOU KILLED MY SISTER!" Toya screamed.

"She's not dead." Enji attempted to reassure the distraught child.

"I FELT HER DIE!" Toya wailed, his quirk went awry and blue flames exploded out from his body engulfing everything in his room.

Enji felt like someone had punched him in the throat as he watched helplessly as Toya broke down. He had a horrible feeling in the pit of his stomach that this day marked a turning point in the lives of his two eldest children and no matter the outcome, he was at fault.

The following day, Enji went to the hospital to check on Tira's condition. The lead doctor in charge of her care assured him she was on a steady recovery path and that all of her vitals looked good. He was hopeful after another day or two of close monitoring she could be moved from the Intensive Care Unit to the general pediatric ward. He followed the doctor to Tira's room listening to all his medical jargon and his constant reassurances that Tira was going to make a full recovery.

As the door swung open Enji and the doctor cringed as Tira screamed in terror and tried to curl into a ball and cower in fear. Her broken ribs protested violently and she let out a cry of pain. Reflexively, her quirk activated and lethal shards of ice shot up from the floor snaking dangerously close to the doctor and Enji. Her quirk had always been strong, stronger than Rei's could ever be. Seeing the fear and panic in her steel grey eyes nearly broke him. Enji activated his quirk to melt the ice and stepped out of the room as he heard the doctor yelling for a nurse to bring a sedative. He waited until Tira had been sedated before trying to enter the room again.

The doctor tried to reassure him that this sometimes happened with patients that had close calls and it was probably for the best to keep her sedated to give her body some time to heal so she didn't end up doing irreparable damage to herself. Enji agreed and returned home. He avoided his family for a few days and went about his life as if everything were normal. The hospital called him with updates at regular intervals. Tira needed another minor surgery after her panicked awakening and activation of her quirk when she'd awoken and after a week of sedation was finally moved to the general pediatric ward to finish out her recovery stay.

Once Tira was moved to the general pediatric ward the doctors suggested taking her off the sedatives, Enji agreed and left the office early. He stopped at home to pick up Toya thinking he'd be able to keep Tira calm. Though Toya wasn't speaking to him, he got in the car when he found out where they were going. The week he'd spent without Tira had left him feeling empty and like a piece of himself was missing.

They arrived at the hospital and made their way in silence to the pediatric ward to Tira's private suite. Enji hesitated outside the door. Worried Tira would scream and end up hurting herself again, he sent Toya in alone as he waited out in the hall.

Toya stepped into the dimly lit hospital room. The door closed quietly behind him. It was eerily quiet, the only sound in the room being the faint rhythmic beeping of the heart rate monitor. He shuffled toward the only bed in the room where he could faintly make out the outline of a small frail girl with long white hair. Tears welled in his eyes as he spotted her and all the feelings, he'd made himself numb to came rushing back at once.

"Tira!" He raced to her bedside as her steel grey eyes fluttered open.

"T-Toya?" Her voice was whisper soft and sounded like it was fading away.

Without thinking he scrambled atop the bed beside her. He hesitated before finding a way to wrap his arms around her without irritating any of the various tubes and IV's sticking out of her. He felt whole once more as he hugged his twin gently and smiled as he felt her frail form relax against him.

"I'm sorry." He sobbed as he held her close being careful not to squeeze her too tight.

"You didn't do anything wrong." Tira's voice was so weak he almost hadn't heard her.

"I should have stopped him-."

"You couldn't have."

Toya bit his lip and struggled for composure, "I will, from now on." He vowed. "I'll never let him lay a hand on you ever again. I promise."

Tira nestled into his arms and closed her eyes, though she'd been in a drug induced slumber for quite some time, she didn't feel rested. She couldn't sleep properly without Toya at her side. Feeling safe in the arms of her twin, she allowed herself to drift into a peaceful sleep.

Enji peered through the small window on the door unable to make out what the children were saying. He almost reprimanded Toya but stopped himself as he realized it was the first time, he'd seen Tira relax since she'd been admitted into the hospital. He sighed and went to find a doctor so he could arrange some way to have Toya stay with Tira. The hospital was very accommodating and agreed to let Toya stay as they believed it would help with Tira's recovery. Ever since she'd woken up, she hadn't said a single word to anyone.

The twins ended up spending the majority of their summer break in the hospital. A few weeks into their hospital stay, Toya realized it was the night of the summer festival and slowly crept out of bed. He padded barefoot across the cool tile floor to the window. In the distance he could see the glow of lanterns from the festival. The fireworks would be starting soon. He struggled to move Tira's hospital bed so that it was facing the window before scrambling to pull all the blinds open.

He hopped back into bed and gently shook Tira awake. Her steel grey eyes fluttered open; they were brighter than they had been in days she finally seemed to be feeling better. She had less tubes and IV's attached to her now and was finally able to eat solid food again and go to the bathroom by herself. A small yawn escaped her and she winced at the slight ache in her ribs from the motion before rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

"Toya? What is it?" She blinked a few times before realizing they were facing the window, "did you move the bed?"

"The fireworks are going to start soon." Toya smiled as he pressed the button on the control panel of the bed to ease Tira into a more upright position so she could see better. "You wanted to see them, right?"

Tears welled in Tira's eyes and she threw her arms around her brother as a soft happy cry escaped her. Toya chuckled as he caught her in his arms and pat her atop the head.

"How are you supposed to watch the fireworks if you keep crying like that?" He teased her with a smile before holding her at an arm's length away so he could wipe away her tears.

There was a loud boom from outside the window. The twins turned and Toya smiled softly to himself as Tira's face lit up. The room filled with the glow of flashing lights from the glittering rainbow of explosives lighting up the sky. From their view it felt like they were in the sky with the fireworks. Toya reached over and placed his hands over Tira's ears to protect her from the loud noises. Her squeals of delight and her lyrical laughter made his heart soar.
