Chapter Thirty Seven
Dabi was livid. Blue hellfire filled the expansive darkness all around her threatening to engulf her. His eyes were filled with so much hatred, it scared her. She tried to reach him but his fire threatened to consume them both. It was so hot she couldn't breathe.
"TOYA!" She screamed as she forced her way through the hellish fire. "STOP!"
"I'LL KILL THEM ALL!" He yelled.
"NO!" Tira cried as she saw Hawks trying to help her injured father stay on his feet, Dabi's flames surged toward them. "I SAID STOP!" Tira shrieked and suddenly her vision cracked and fell apart, like broken glass.
"Easy, Ice Queen, you're okay." A familiar voice penetrated the darkness.
Tira woke to find herself in a hospital bed. There were jagged spears of black ice all around her, as if they'd been about to lurch outward and attack anything or anyone that approached her. She tried to sit up but fell back with a wince of pain as her abdomen protested violently, soon other parts of her began to react and she let out a gasp, she could feel again! She crumpled on her bed with a grimace, if only her body had decided it would start feeling again at a less painful moment.
She managed to wave away the ice she'd unconsciously created and Hawks appeared at her side. He slipped his hand in hers and gave it a gentle squeeze. It had been awhile since she'd felt this intense of a pain and it threatened to throw her back into unconsciousness. She tried to take a few deep breaths to acclimate to the pain but that only hurt more as the stitches in her abdomen pulled slightly with her deep breaths.
Hawks leaned over her and pressed a button on something dangling next to her. A moment later she felt a faint numbing sensation wash over her, easing her terrible pain. "Your Dad's sidekick said you had nerve damage and couldn't feel anymore." He looked down at her curiously.
"It picked a great time to go away." Tira murmured sarcastically, even with the help of the numbing pain killer, she was still in pain.
Hawks tried to adjust her pillows to make her more comfortable before sighing as he realized it was hopeless. He took a seat at the chair at her bedside and held her hand. "What happened out there? I thought for sure your Old Man and I were about to be toast."
Tira hesitated, "is my Dad alright?"
Hawks offered her a smile, "he will be, he's in the next room over."
Tira relaxed, relieved that her father was alright.
"What happened?" Hawks asked her, squeezing her cold hand gently in his. "I'm a little fuzzy on the end part. It seemed like there was a lot of fire heading right for us and suddenly a dome of black ice surged up around us."
Tira shook her head as tears welled in her eyes as she thought about what had happened. She'd fought with her twin, to save them. She felt guilty, Toya should be the most important person to her, yet she hurt him, to save them.
"Tira?" Hawks tenderly wiped away the single icy tear that had fallen.
"Can I see my Dad?" She asked him shakily.
Hawks' gaze slipped down to the handprint burned into her arm, since he'd seen it he'd been trying to figure out how it had gotten there. As much as he had looked up to Endeavor, when he saw the handprint he realized it was the same size as his hand, a perfect fit. "You sure?"
She nodded.
"On one condition." Hawks offered her a small smile.
"What's that?" She asked curiously.
"Don't move." He smiled.
She threw him a curious glance.
Hawks smiled and swept her into his arms, delighting in the cute squeal of shock and awe that had escaped her. "Deal?"
Tira's cheeks flushed scarlet and she nodded her head.
"Alright, think you can grab that?" He indicated the IV stand at her bedside.
Tira reached out and grabbed the thin metal stand with her good hand, her other was in a thin cast. The IV stand wheeled along beside them as Hawks carried her from the room. She felt wary and her body ached all over. Her head dropped onto Hawks' shoulder. He paused and glanced down, worried she'd lost consciousness. His lips pulled into a smile as he noticed she was still awake. He gently adjusted his grip, holding her closer. Perhaps all she needed was some kind of comforting touch, it had been quite some time since she'd been able to feel.
"You okay?" He asked her.
Tira nodded.
Her father's room was right next to hers. He looked up as the door opened and threw a dark look at Hawks as he spotted a pained Tira in his arms. His expression softened as her dark grey eyes quickly scanned the room and fell on him. Hawks gently set her on the chair at her father's bedside and took his leave after receiving several threatening looks from Endeavor.
"Tira? Are you alright?" Her father asked worriedly.
Tira shook her head, "...I hurt Toya..."
Endeavor thought for a moment pondering over her words carefully. He had to be careful how he responded, he could see she was in a very precarious position, she was drowning herself in guilt. "You saved a lot of people, myself and Hawks included..." He could see that wasn't enough, "...your brother is strong, you should know that more than anyone. I'm sure he'll recover, just fine. Don't beat yourself up over it." His gaze fell to the cast around her wrist. "Where did that winged brat go, I told him he'd pay if anything happened to yo-."
"...Nii-chan did it..." Tira said softly.
Enji's eyes widened. Why would he do that? Toya loved Tira more than anything, why would he hurt her? Guilt began to consume him, it was all he'd ever known growing up. Enji had been a horrid example for them. He felt sick with himself as he saw Tira withdrawing into herself, making herself small.
"Tira...you give your brother and I way too many second chances...it's okay for you to be angry with both of us, you don't have to forgive anyone...you can be angry...it's probably not the right advice or the healthy advice but you can retaliate...you deserve that much." Enji spoke softly.
Tira shook her head as tears welled in her eyes, "I don't want to be angry...I just want us all to be a family again..."
Enji felt his heart clench painfully in his chest as a single tear escaped her and froze in place halfway down her cheek. He felt his own eyes begin to dampen, "...I don't know if that will ever happen again Tira..." He admitted, heartbrokenly.
Tira was quiet for a very long time. She sat frozen in a catatonic state trying to process the very likely possibility that her one wish, for them to be a family, would never come true.
Enji winced in pain as he lifted his arm and reached toward her. His doctor had told him not to move but to hell with that. He placed his hand in hers and was surprised when she reacted as if she had felt it. She looked up at him with pain filled eyes.
"Tira? Can you feel again?" He asked in awe.
She nodded.
His heart stuttered in his chest, swelling with relief. If she could feel again, she could live her life like other girls her age. She wouldn't need constant monitoring or bruise checks anymore. She could live freely. "That's wonderful." He said without thinking before realizing she was currently injured, "-ah-...I mean...probably not right this very moment..."
Tira nodded but said nothing. Her gaze drifted up to the clock on the wall. It was now nearly 9pm. "...we missed dinner..."
Enji smiled somberly, "we did."
"We should bring mom flowers to say we're sorry." Tira murmured.
"We can do that." Enji gently squeezed her hand.
She fell silent again.
Enji frowned. "Tira?"
She turned her steel grey eyes upward, meeting his gaze.
"About that winged brat..." Enji began nervously.
"Hawks?" She inquired.
"Yes." Enji paused. It took him a moment to put his thoughts into words, "...it's alright if you have feelings for him...I know I don't exactly seem very supportive of him...but it is okay, if you like him. It's also okay if you like Toya..." He sighed. He wasn't doing a very good job at this. "...what I'm trying to say is it's alright for you to like whoever you like, I only want you to do what makes you happy."
Tira bowed her head. She felt conflicted.
Much later, after her father drifted back to sleep. Hawks returned for her. Tira looked up as he stepped into the room and frowned as she realized the collar of his jacket was sizzling and smoking a little as if he'd just recently been burned. She extended her hand toward him and Hawks paused as he saw ice begin to spread around his collar putting out the remaining dying embers from his very close encounter with his contact, who until recently had been fairly safe to converse with. After today's events, however, Dabi seemed very intent on taking his life.
"Thanks, Ice Queen." He said softly so as not to wake her temperamental father.
"Why was it on fire?" Tira asked him worriedly.
"Just thought I'd help with the damage cleanup there were still some small fires here and there. It's all under control now, so no need to worry." He lied. His gaze flicked to the handprint on her arm and he thought for a moment before speaking, "I've been wanting to ask you something since I saw that handprint on your arm, but I don't want to make you uncomfortable..."
Tira looked at her father sleeping restlessly in his hospital bed. "...ask..."
Hawks glanced over at her father's hand resting atop the bed, "...that hand there looks like it fits perfectly..."
Tira's gaze snapped to Hawks. That wasn't a question, "...ask..."
Hawks hesitated, "did your Old Man do that?"
Tears welled in her eyes as she suddenly realized the only person outside of her family that knew was Giran. She'd never told anyone. She'd never admitted it aloud to anyone. "...yes..."
Hawks felt as if someone punched him in the gut, "you saved his life today."
Tira nodded.
"Why?" Hawks asked.
"...he's trying really hard to make things right. Nobody else sees it. Even he can't see it most days. He's really hard on himself and I think he's scared every day that he'll fail, but he's not the same person he was, one day I hope everyone will see that...even him." Tira said softly.
Hawks stared at her for a long moment before smiling softly. To an outsider looking in, they'd see a frail, weak, withering girl who looked like she could break in even the gentlest of breezes. To Hawks, he saw the reality, she wasn't frail, she wasn't weak. She was unbreakable. "You truly are amazing, Ice Queen. I hope you can see that." He smiled fondly. An idea struck him and his smile grew, "I want to show you something."
Tira looked at him curiously as he approached her and stopped next to her chair.
"May I?" He asked with a suave smile that gave her butterflies.
"O-okay." She blushed.
Hawks smiled and swept her into his arms, delighting in the way she threw her arms around his neck as if she were afraid she'd fall. He chuckled softly as she clung to him for a moment before relaxing. He waited for her to grab hold of her IV stand before carrying her out of the room.
"Where are we going?" Tira asked him curiously as he walked past her room and headed for the staff only elevator.
"It's a surprise." Hawks smiled.
"Are we allowed to use these?" Tira asked worriedly as he pressed the button for the elevator.
"I won't tell if you won't." He grinned.
Tira felt a strange giddiness well up inside of her and couldn't help but smile at his mischievous behavior. She nodded and he whisked her onto the staff elevator. They rode all the way up to the rooftop.
"What are we doing?" Tira asked curiously as they exited onto the roof of the hospital.
Hawks chuckled and carried her to the west side of the hospital facing the nearby destruction where countless city blocks were still without power. "Look." He smiled.
Tira looked out across the rooftop to the city before them. There was a small portion of darkness amidst the sparkling city where the starlit sky was visible. It looked like a piece of art with this beautiful natural star speckled sky trapped between two skies filled with light pollution and a dazzling cityscape. Her heart suddenly hurt as she was momentarily transported back to the VR arcade Toya had brought her to where they laid under a night sky and watched fireworks exploding amongst the stars. She turned her face to look at Hawks and smiled, "thank you, Hawks."
