Chapter Thirty Four
"You're letting her leave the house in THAT?!" Natsuo momentarily forgot he wasn't speaking to his father as he stared at him incredulously after seeing the dress Tira was wearing.
Endeavor looked Tira over. His gut reaction was to side with Natsuo and make her change, but Rei told him Tira had picked it out herself and seemed excited about it. He'd done enough to squash her happiness, he could let her have this. The dress was bold and daring in a vibrant red color. It was an a-line dress with some beading on the form fitting bodice. It had a deep v neck and a low back though her long snow white hair covered the back. Rei handed her a pair of long satin gloves to cover the scarring on her hands, wrist and forearm.
Tira shakily put the gloves on before looking to her family anxiously. She'd never worn something in this bright of a color before. Was it strange? Natsuo seemed to be upset by her appearance as he kept throwing furious looks at their father. She bit her lip nervously as everyone stayed quiet, stunned that Natsuo had spoken to his father.
"Seriously?!" Natsuo hissed at his father.
Enji looked to Tira as she nervously glanced around waiting for someone to say something, "you look beautiful."
Fuyumi nodded her agreement, "absolutely stunning, that cute hero won't know what hit him."
Tira blushed as she thought of the handsome hero who'd come to her rescue at the mall.
"What hero?" Enji and Natsuo asked in unison.
Rei waved away their concern with a smile, "just a nice boy Tira met at the mall. He was a perfect gentleman, no need to worry."
"She talked to someone?!" Natsuo gaped.
Fuyumi nodded.
"Why did no one think to tell me about any of this?" Enji asked, feeling at a loss.
"I didn't think anything was wrong and didn't want you two acting exactly how you're acting now." Rei pointed as she looked to her husband and middle son. They were both standing disapprovingly with their arms folding in front of their chests.
Natsuo, realizing he'd been mimicking his father's pose, dropped his arms at his side immediately. "Aren't things moving a bit fast?"
"Fast?" Fuyumi frowned, "they talked once at a mall and are going to be at a public conference, what on earth is fast about that?"
Tira sighed softly, her family was talking about her like she wasn't even here. While her mother and sister continued trying to smooth things over, Tira heard a faint knock at the door and went to answer it. She opened the door without her family noticing and smiled softly as she spotted one of her father's sidekicks. Burnin was a few years her senior with bright flaming hair, dark eyes, pointed teeth and a fiery personality. She was wearing a long black military style jacket over a pair of leggings. Her dark eyes grew wide as she spotted the timid eldest Todoroki daughter wearing a bright red dress.
"Well, look at you, I think red might be your color." Burnin greeted the fragile girl with a smile.
Tira's smile grew.
"They let you answer the door on your own, that seems uncharacteristic?" Burnin inquired as she stepped inside before noticing the rest of the Todoroki family, save for the youngest and eldest sons, seeming to be having some kind of argument. Burnin looked to Tira with a sigh, "they doing that thing where they talk about you like you're not there?"
Tira nodded.
Burnin sighed and poised her thumb and index finger together before sticking them in her mouth. She let out a loud shrill whistle that got everyone's attention and caused Tira to giggle quietly.
"Oh, Burnin, don't you look nice." Rei smiled politely as she looked at Burnin's military-like attire.
Burning shrugged, "I don't do ball gowns."
"We should get going." Endeavor picked up a shawl for Tira and extended it to her.
"H-hey! Burnin! Don't let anyone creep on my sister!" Natsuo yelled after them.
Burnin waved behind her nonchalantly, dismissing him, "she held her own against the Hero Killer, I'm sure she can handle a creep or two." She looked over at the timid Todoroki at her side, "right?"
Tira offered her a small smile and nodded. She liked Burnin, even if she was a bit loud and at times scary, she was a good person and let Tira be more independent than most of her family. Burnin offered her an arm to assist her with walking in heels and helped her to the car. She soon found herself sitting in the back of a limo between her father and his sidekick, feeling giddy and anxious about seeing the handsome winged hero that had somehow made her feel.
The limo slowed after about twenty minutes as they reached the convention center the conference was being held at. Endeavor frowned as he saw press cluttering the entrance and screaming fans just behind the press. He looked to his fragile daughter warily. The press and screaming fans might be too much for her. "This could be troublesome." He frowned.
Burnin looked out the window and quickly realized the dilemma, "we could set the press on fire?" She offered.
Tira threw her a worried look not sure if she was joking or not.
"Let's call that plan B." Endeavor smirked.
"Affirmative." Burnin nodded seriously.
Tira's eyes grew wide.
The driver cleared his throat, "Sir, there is a back entrance."
Tira breathed a sigh of relief not sure if her father and Burnin were seriously going to barbeque the press.
"That works." Endeavor shrugged.
As the car moved past the crowded front entrance, Tira perked up a little as she heard dozens of women scream 'HAWKS!' really loudly. She sat up a little and strained to look out the tinted windows through the crowd of people to try and get a glimpse of him.
"What on earth is all the hullabaloo about?" Her father growled annoyed by all the screaming.
"A nuisance." Burnin grumbled with distaste.
Tira spotted Hawks, flying through the air making a grand entrance. Her heart stuttered in her chest as she watched him land among his fans with a smile. He was so nice! He greeted his fans warmly and even took selfies with them. She turned around in her seat to get a better look as the limo drove away to pull around to the back of the building.
"Something the matter?" Burnin asked her curiously.
Tira shook her head and hurriedly righted herself in her seat as Burnin, her father and their driver stared at her in wonder. She folded her hands in her lap in front of her and stared down at her clasped hands.
Burnin and Endeavor exchanged a quick look with the driver before they all resumed looking away, not wanting to draw any further attention to Tira. The car came to a stop at the back entrance that luckily wasn't crowded with press. They managed to quietly make their way inside through the catering door, receiving a few curious looks from the catering staff.
Once they arrived in the main hall outside of the auditorium, Endeavor was approached by convention center staff urging him to go backstage for interviews before the conference began. He hesitated, he'd been hoping to get Tira safely to her seat and make sure she was alright.
Burnin draped an arm across Tira's slender shoulders, "don't worry, Sir, we'll be alright."
Enji hesitated and looked at Tira. She offered him a smile and a quick hug for good luck. "If you need me-." He cut off unsure of how she could really contact him quickly.
"She'll turn the place into an ice palace." Burnin surmised.
"Let's avoid that, if we can." Endeavor groaned.
Tira giggled quietly and he gave her a slightly awkward pat on the head still not knowing best how to show affection.
"I won't be far." He assured her before following the convention staff.
Burnin looked around the crowded main hall and noticed a few people holding program booklets. "Lets get some of those so we can avoid people who try to talk to us." She pointed to the programs.
Tira nodded and allowed Burnin to steer her away. Burnin aggressively accepted a program from one of the convention staff, nearly giving him a heart attack as she yanked it from his grasp. Tira politely bowed her head in thanks as he recovered and offered her one of her own. As she grabbed for the pamphlet a strong gust of wind, from a low ranking hero who'd picked an inopportune moment to show off his quirk, sent the pamphlet skittering away.
Tira broke away from Burnin and went to retrieve it. The program fell to the floor halfway across the room. Her heart skipped a beat as she spotted a familiar gloved hand scoop up her pamphlet as Hawks knelt to pick it up for her.
He looked up at her with a suave smile and extended the program to her, "lose something, Ice Queen?"
There was a chorus of squeals around them and a plethora of flashing lights as several of the press who'd been allowed access began snapping photos of the scene. Tira momentarily froze up at the sudden uproar and unwanted attention. She focused on Hawks' calming gold eyes and managed to smile and accept the program from him,
"....thank you...." Tira blushed. His gloved hand brushed against hers as she accepted the program and she felt the gentlest of warm touches.
Burnin caught up and took one look at the scene before rushing to Tira's aid, "hey, not so close pal." She draped an arm across Tira's shoulders and pulled her back a step away from the flashy fan favorite nuisance of a hero.
Hawks looked to the sidekick curiously, she was one of Endeavor's sidekicks. He looked over the timid white haired girl curiously. He didn't recall her being one of his favorite hero's sidekicks. She had an ice quirk, not really his style. Not a lot was known about the Todoroki family behind the scenes, they were good at keeping things behind closed doors, but he recalled the youngest Todoroki child having both fire and ice quirks.
"Are you also one of Endeavor's sidekicks?" He asked warily, fearing the alternative answer, immensely.
"Daughter." Burnin corrected him with a scowl, "so unless you were interested in becoming fried chicken, shoo."
Hawks' eyes grew wide.
"Burnin." Tira protested softly causing the girl with the flaming hair to let out a gasp.
"You're talking?!" Burnin yelped before looking from Tira to Hawks, "oh no, oh no, no, no, no...not because of that?" She pointed at Hawks with a groan.
"That?" Hawks frowned at the insult.
"You're going to get me fired." Burnin glared at him.
Hawks noticed some of the convention staff trying to get his attention. He looked to the timid beauty with the deep steel eyes and felt nervousness bubble up inside of him. He had no idea she was Endeavor's daughter.
"Perhaps I'll see you afterward." Hawks offered her a smile.
Tira felt somewhat giddy and tried to conceal her shy smile behind her silken sheets of frosty white hair.
"See you around, Ice Queen." Hawks bowed to her, causing her heart to flutter in her chest and her stomach to attempt somersaults.
"I'm gonna hurl." Burnin groaned as she watched the winged hero take his leave. She looked to Tira who was trying her best to fight off a goofy smile, "seriously? He takes selfies! Why couldn't you like someone cool?"
Tira blushed, "....I think he's pretty cool."
"Ugh there's probably already a ton of rumors in the news now since you're both annoyingly attractive and photogenic." Burnin huffed and pulled out her phone. Sure enough a picture of the moment that had just happened was already on the internet and people were wondering who the mystery princess was that had 'captured Hawks' heart'. Burnin scowled at the article, "these vultures are delusional, he picked up a pamphlet it's not like he proposed."
Tira looked at the article on Burnin's phone and felt overcome with panic and worry. What if Toya saw it and got the wrong idea?! Would he try to hurt Hawks?! She felt light headed and nearly swayed on her feet.
"Whoa, what's wrong with you?" Burnin asked worriedly and adjusted her grip on her to steady her. "You got pale, I mean you're always pale but you got like scary pale." She noticed Tira staring at the photo, "you worried about your Dad seeing this?"
Tira lied and nodded her head.
Burnin smirked, "I'm sure it will prove to be entertaining."
Tira imagined Toya incinerating Hawks in a horrific blast of blue hellfire and felt her stomach churn unpleasantly.
Burnin frowned as she realized Tira was still worried. "Don't worry, your Dad won't seriously hurt him or anything. It'll be okay."
