Shoto- 15 Years Old
"Shoto, would you mind making sure Tira is awake before you leave for school?" Fuyumi called to her youngest brother from the kitchen as she packed lunches for her and Tira.
At fifteen, Shoto was ready to start his high school career at UA, a prestigious hero school, the same one their father had graduated from. Being the son of the number two hero, he got in on recommendation. He wondered if the public knew the truth behind closed doors if his father would still be number two. Because of his father he didn't really have a close relationship with any of his siblings. His eldest sister used to come to his rescue a lot but after their mother was sent away, she became very meek and withdrawn. When he was ten, she tried to commit suicide, the house had been in an uproar. Most of his childhood memories were of chaos and heartache.
He reached Tira's room and paused as he looked across the hall to Toya's room; Toya hadn't been home in two years though no one talked about it. Shoto didn't have any answers. Tira wasn't speaking, Toya was missing and their father wasn't going to tell them anything about the incident that took place when Toya had spirited Tira away from the mental health facility their father had imprisoned her in. Shoto lightly knocked on Tira's door. There wasn't a response, though there usually never was, the last time he remembered her speaking was the night he'd gotten the scar over his eye. He didn't even remember what her voice sounded like.
"Nee-san, I'm coming in." He called before stepping into her room.
Tira's room looked somewhat like princesses and fairies vomited everywhere. Everything was bright and happy. All the art on the walls was sunshine and daisies, things many of her therapists thought would help her heal. Her bed was bright and frilly with lots of super soft blankets, pillows and plushies, soft safe things she could surround herself in, not that any of it seemed to be helping. She was sound asleep lying across the foot of her bed. Shoto frowned, he didn't think she slept very well at night, sometimes when he'd sneak out of his room for a late-night snack or glass of water, he'd hear her screaming in her sleep. He knew she cried herself to sleep every night but she wouldn't talk to anyone and tell them what was wrong.
"Nee-san." He called to her softly as he slowly approached the bed trying not to make any sudden movements or too jarring of sounds that could frighten her. His eldest sister acted much like small furry creature, like a rabbit, always on alert, jumping at anything sudden and looking like she was ready to flee at any moment.
He stopped next to her bed and looked to the scars covering her arms, neck and chest. When her father had brought her home, she was bloody, crying, and screaming. She'd been clawing at her arms chest and neck as if there was something on her skin irritating her that she couldn't get off. After a week it seemed whatever had been causing her pain had stopped and she stopped trying to tear at her skin and withdrew into her shell.
"Nee-san." He called to her quietly and gently touched her hand.
Her steel grey eyes fluttered open. He saw panic fill her eyes for a moment before she noticed him and calmed a little. After a moment her eyes fell on his UA uniform. "...you start high school today..." Her voice nearly startled him and for a moment he wasn't sure if he had imagined it or not.
"Nee-san, did you say something?" He asked her in awe.
Tira froze up for a moment but relaxed after a while. "...have a good day at school..."
Shoto stared at his eldest sister in awe, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Thanks, Nee-san." He quickly scanned her revealed arms over for any bruises, since her suicide attempt, she seemed to have lost the ability to feel anything so it was always a concern that she might accidentally break a bone and not know it. It became a routine for the whole family to always check Tira for bruising or injuries she didn't know about. He hesitated as she sat up and swung her legs over the edge of the bed, he felt like he should do something more, as a thank you for her finally speaking to him. He slowly stepped forward and hugged her careful not to move too fast.
Tira tensed as her youngest brother hugged her before hugging him back. She still had no feeling; it had been almost two years since she'd last felt something. The last thing she'd felt was pain, burning and her heart shattering as she and Toya were pulled apart once again. Toya had flown into a blind rage when he'd returned to their hotel and discovered their father lying in wait. He didn't even give him a chance to speak, he attacked without thinking but it seemed like he was already at his limit as if he'd used his quirk too much already when he attacked their father.
Their father had tried to reason with him, but Toya was beyond reason. Tira tried to keep the peace and get them to stop fighting but Toya wouldn't back down. He ended up getting badly burned, his pain was too much for Tira to bear, she remembered herself falling, her father had been closest to her at the time and she suspected he'd refused to let Toya take her when he fled. Occasionally she'd feel his pain, if he got into a fight or something, it didn't happen too often but enough to let her know he was still out there somewhere, surviving and fighting to get to her. She knew deep down he'd come for her and ask her to run away with him and she'd say yes. As much as she wanted them all to be a big happy family, she couldn't stand to be apart from her brother even if she didn't quite understand his feelings for her.
Shoto pulled away and frowned as he noticed tears welling in Tira's eyes, she was probably thinking about Toya, she always cried when she thought about Toya. "Have a good day, Nee-san." He said softly.
Tira forced herself to put on a small ghost a smile and waved her youngest brother away before he was late for his first day of school. Once Shoto left, Tira went to her walk-in closet to get dressed for the day. The first few months she'd been back at home her father had hired some live-in caregivers so she had around the clock care and monitoring but none of them made Tira comfortable. After about six months he gave up on the idea. He and Fuyumi would take turns taking her with them to work. Fuyumi was a teacher at a small private school for children that also had a daycare center and preschool for younger children. Tira usually helped out in the nursery and though she didn't speak to any of the other staff, she seemed to enjoy helping out with the babies. On occasion if her father thought she was feeling especially stressed out he'd take her to spend the day with Rei, it seemed good for both of them. Sometimes, Tira's doctor would advise her father to have her admitted into another facility but Enji refused, even if it might seem like a better fit, he knew that wasn't what she wanted and he didn't want to push her over the edge again.
She changed into a pale grey knee length dress and tied her hair back with a grey ribbon before stepping into a pair of matching flats and exiting her bedroom. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a figure in her periphery and jumped.
"Sorry." Her father's voice had her instantly on edge, she tried to force herself to calm as she turned to see what he wanted. His gaze flicked down to her revealed legs and his lips pulled into a frown, "there's a bruise on your leg."
Tira glanced down and spotted a bruise over her shin, she hadn't even noticed it when she was changing perhaps, she'd accidentally kicked one of the posts. It wasn't a good idea to lay at the foot of her bed last night. Her father knelt on the ground and made a move to reach out to check the bruise and make sure it wasn't anything serious. As panic gripped her, Tira's body jerked away reflexively. She winced as she saw him react as if it had hurt him and pull away from her. He got to his feet and cleared his throat putting some distance between them so as not to startle her further.
"I'll tell Fuyumi to look at..." He amended. "Will you be alright going to school with Fuyumi for a few days?"
Tira nodded.
"Alright. If you're not sure, you could come with me...the conference is at a resort, they probably have a pool and other things." He tried, worried about leaving her behind for a few days while he went to some hero conference.
Tira shook her head.
Enji bowed his head, "alright, whatever you want..." He hesitated again, "do you need anything before I go?"
Tira shook her head again.
Enji hesitated once more, he wanted to give her a hug goodbye but didn't want to overwhelm her or make her panic further. The therapist he saw on a weekly basis to help with his anger issues suggested he try to be more affectionate with his children that physical contact could help alleviate some of the tension. He started to open his arms as if to hug her but noticed her wince slightly and stopped himself.
"I'll be on my way then...if you need anything, let Fuyumi know...I'll be home in a few days..." he awkwardly ran his hand through his hair not sure how to talk to the daughter he'd damaged so badly. "Have a good day." He turned to walk away somewhat stiffly while mentally scolding himself for how terribly he'd done in his attempt to talk to her and be comforting.
He took a step away before he felt a light tap on his back. He froze in place knowing better than to turn around too quickly, it would only make Tira cower in terror. Her thin arms encircled him from behind giving him a brief hug. Enji lightly pat her on the arm though he knew she probably couldn't feel it.
"Thank you, Tira."
She let go and took a hurried step away. He chanced a glance over his shoulder and saw her standing a few paces away with her head bowed. He smiled and headed to the kitchen to tell Fuyumi about the bruise on Tira's leg before taking his leave.
Tira slowly made her way to the dining room. She spotted her younger brother, Natsuo, sitting at the dining table rushing to finish one of his assignments. He was in college and had started classes a week ago and was already behind. He was an expert procrastinator and put off everything until the last possible minute. She noticed he'd answered one of the math problems incorrectly and pointed to it.
Natsuo jumped startled by her sudden appearance which in turn made her jump and nearly fall over. He reached out and caught her gently by the hand and managed to steady her, "sorry about that, Nee-chan, you startled me." He smiled. His smile reminded her of Toya's smile. He released his grip on her hand and ran his hand through his short spiky white hair before looking to the problem she'd pointed to, "is it wrong?" He asked her curiously and looked to her for a response.
She nodded.
"Ah crap." Natsuo groaned and began erasing his answer and trying again. "That?" He asked her again.
She shook her head and he erased it once more before thinking it over a little harder. Tira reached for his pencil and scribbled down the correct method to figure out the calculation.
Natsuo smiled, "I always knew Nee-chan was the smart one."
Tira handed him his pencil as Fuyumi exited the kitchen with breakfast. Fuyumi greeted her elder sister with a bright smile and set down a plate with French toast and some fresh strawberries at Tira's usual seat. She pulled the chair out for Tira to take a seat.
Tira felt a little frustrated, she didn't like feeling like everyone was taking care of her, it made her feel helpless. She was the eldest sister yet all of her younger siblings treated her like a child. She knew they all did it because they cared about her but she wished they'd worry a little less and let her do more for herself. She took her seat and her lips pulled into a frown as Fuyumi bent forward to examine her bruise. Once she ascertained it wasn't a break and just a bruise, she pushed in Tira's chair and returned to the kitchen to get her own plate of food before taking her seat.
Natsuo and Fuyumi watched Tira quietly as she nibbled at her food. Strawberries had always been her favorite but she just pushed them around on her plate. They both frowned. It hurt to see her like this. Natsuo glanced down at his watch, he had to get going or he'd be late. He got up and moved over to kiss the top of Tira's head.
"Have a good day." He waved farewell to his older sisters before heading off.
Fuyumi and Tira finished up their breakfast. Tira helped with the dishes and they went to the awaiting car to take them to the school Fuyumi taught at. In the car, Tira let her thoughts wander to Toya. She wished Toya would come home but she feared after what she had witnessed of his fight with their father and what she felt in the days that followed that there would be no talking him down from his rage this time. As the car pulled up to the entrance of the school, Tira felt her breath hitch in her throat. Her chest swelled, Toya was somewhere nearby, she could sense him. Frantically she peered out the window. Her steel grey eyes locked on a pair of turquoise eyes she'd be able to pick out of any crowd. They belonged to a tall thin yet lean young man of twenty-three. His hair was dyed black, the burns he'd received from the fight with their father had turned his flesh somewhat black and mottled. There were more patches of black mottled flesh beneath his eyes and the lower half of his face from his bottom lip all the way down his neck. There were what looked like medical staples along his cheek and under his eyes connecting the scarred skin to the untouched skin. He smiled as he held her gaze and held a finger up to his lips urging her not to give him away. Tira nodded in a daze and allowed Fuyumi to steer her inside.
