UA was overflowing with people in attendance for the Sports Festival. Tira wanted to support her youngest brother and when her father had asked her if she wanted to tag alone with him, she agreed to join him, much to his surprise. Enji looked down at Tira worried that the amount of people would make her panic but found her looking around curiously. She was standing much closer to him than she usually would so he knew the crowd was making her a little nervous but her curiosity seemed to be winning out.
There were many pro-heroes on staff at the event working security. Enji was starting to regret showing up in his hero costume as it was drawing a lot of unwanted attention. Though he'd been noticed by many people because of his usual disposition many of his fans gave him space and didn't approach him too often. He saw a handful of press straining to get a good look at him. He ignored them and turned his attention to Tira as she looked at the various food stands with interest.
"Are you hungry?" He asked her curiously and grimaced as he noticed her jump at the sudden sound of his voice.
She looked up at him and shook her head causing her silken frosty white locks to flutter around her catching the beams of sunlight perfectly. Enji frowned as he saw a plethora of young men looking in her direction. He threw a scowl at them all before gently placing his hands on her shoulders and steering her away from the onlookers and toward the stadium.
"Let's go." He grumbled in annoyance not liking that so many men were ogling his daughter.
Tira glanced up at her father curiously not understanding his sudden hurry but allowed herself to be steered away. Her steel gaze drifted to a nearby food stall and her feet stopped moving as she spotted a sign with a strawberry on it.
Meeting resistance, Enji paused not wanting to hurt her and followed her gaze to a frozen yogurt stand. He noticed a giant sign with a strawberry on it and realized that was where Tira was looking. Did she like strawberries? He mentally kicked himself as he realized he knew next to nothing about what his eldest daughter liked.
"Tira, do you like strawberries?" He asked her curiously.
A small smile twisted onto her lips and she nodded.
"Do you want frozen yogurt with strawberry topping?" He asked as he looked to the line at the stall.
She hesitated. She didn't want to ask for anything but it did look really good and all the smiling faces of the children enjoying the frozen dessert made it seem even more enticing. After a moment she nodded shyly.
Enji caved and steered her toward the frozen yogurt stand. Luckily no one approached them, though he did hear a few people exclaim, 'look it's Endeavor' and 'is that his new sidekick' when they looked at him and Tira.
The man behind the food stand stared at him wide eyed for a moment not believing the number two hero, Endeavor, had graced his stand with his presence, "ah, Endeavor, sir, what can I get you?" The middle-aged man stumbled all over himself completely starstruck.
Enji looked down at Tira curiously, she wouldn't speak to strangers. "Strawberry?"
Realizing the dessert was for the fragile looking girl at his side, the man behind the counter offered Tira a warm smile, "you like strawberries, miss?"
Tira nodded and unconsciously took a step closer to her father.
"I've got just the thing, for you." The man behind the counter smiled and went to make a dessert.
Enji tried to hold back a smile as Tira peered around him to get a closer look at what the man was doing as he expertly swirled some pink frozen yogurt into a cup before topping it with fluffy pink streaked whipped cream, fresh strawberries and finishing it with a drizzle of strawberry sauce. There were stars in Tira's eyes as she watched him expertly construct the delightful strawberry dessert. He could no longer hold back his smile as he saw the innocent look of delight on Tira's face as the man behind the counter presented the strawberry dessert to her. She timidly accepted it with a polite bow of her head as Enji handed the man some money and told him to keep the change.
Enji chuckled as he watched Tira take a bite of the strawberry dessert. Her face lit up and for a moment he thought she might try to hug the dessert. He placed a hand atop her head and gently steered her toward the stadium.
"Are strawberries your favorite food, Tira?" He asked her curiously as they made their way to the stands. He felt her head bob a little as she nodded and took another bite of the strawberry dessert. He frowned as he realized he had no idea what any of his children's favorite foods were. Did any of them have food allergies? That seemed like something he should know. "Do you know what your brothers' and sister's favorite foods are?"
Tira nodded.
"Toya?" Enji pondered.
"Strawberries."
"I guess I should have known that." Enji smirked, "Shoto?"
"Zaru Soba."
"Fuyumi?" Enji asked.
"Ice cream." Tira took another bite of the delightful strawberry dessert.
"Natsuo?"
"Sashimi."
Enji smiled and gave her a gentle pat on the head, "do any of you have food allergies?"
Tira thought for a moment and shook her head.
"Well that's a relief." Enji sighed as they stepped out of the stairwell into the stadium. The stands were already packed with onlookers.
The first years made their way onto the field below as the Sports Festival began. Shoto looked up in the stands, his face was about to contort into a scowl as he noticed his father but it turned into a look of awe as he noticed Tira at his side. Her steel grey eyes met his and she smiled and waved at him. He smiled for a moment before turning away. He hadn't expected her to be here but he was happy to see her out and about.
When he'd been training at home for the upcoming festival, Fuyumi had suggested he ask Tira for help. Shoto was a little reluctant at first, he didn't think his feeble eldest sister would be of much help. When he asked for her help, she seemed more than happy to help him. Not sure what to expect, Shoto had been surprised to find out her quirk was insanely strong. With her help he'd managed to strengthen his ice quirk but he had no idea how she could create ice that couldn't be melted even with his left side. As he'd watched Tira use her insane power, he'd remembered the night he'd gotten the scar on his left eye when Toya had told him that Tira was the strongest person he knew.
The first event was an obstacle course race around the stadium. Shoto took an early lead and managed to stay ahead of all the other students for most of the race. Tira noticed he was only using his ice quirk and chanced a glance at her father. He seemed frustrated but also like he was trying to keep himself calm. She knew it bothered him that Shoto refused to use his left side. During the last obstacle one of Shoto's classmates caught up to him appearing to be upset about something and tried to violently take the lead. Not long after another of his classmates blasted himself into first place, literally.
Shoto finished in second place, though neither Shoto nor their father seemed happy about it. Tira looked at her father scowling at the leaderboard lineup and frowned. A chill ran down Enji's spine and it felt like the air around him had plummeted in temperature. He peeled his eyes away from the scoreboard and looked down to find Tira fixing him with what she thought was an intimidating look. It didn't have the desired effect in her cute lilac colored dress and matching ribbon in her hair, making her appear childlike and not very threatening.
"What?" Enji frowned.
She mustered up a reprimanding glare.
"He would have easily gotten first if he-." Enji tried to reason with her but cut off as her glare suddenly turned intimidating. There was a split second where he actually felt a fleeting moment of fear. Ice began to climb up the wall behind him, thick ice with a black core that nearly burned at the touch with how cold it was. He sighed, "second place is still good."
Her glare vanished and the ice disappeared.
Enji looked down at Tira curiously not sure if he should laugh at the absurdity of what had just happened or feel immensely proud of her for standing up to him like she did. He smiled down at her and gave her a light pat on the head.
The second event was a cavalry battle. Shoto still insisted on using only his ice quirk. There was a brief moment where he used his left side near the end of the event, though he looked like he regretted it instantly. Tira sympathized with her youngest brother. She chanced a glance in her father's direction. He looked frustrated. Shoto's rejection of his quirk was really getting under his skin. Sensing Tira's gaze he managed to calm himself.
"Let's get some lunch." He guided her back into the labyrinth of tunnels and stairs to find their way to where the food stalls were located.
As they reached an empty stairwell, Tira skipped down the steps, she wanted to find Shoto on his lunch break to cheer him on and offer him some words of encouragement but she had a feeling he wouldn't want to see her right now since their father was with her. Her father was a step behind her and smiled as he noticed the skip in her step.
"Yo! Long time no see! Let's catch up, Endeavor." A voice boomed on the stairs behind them.
A yelp escaped Tira and her foot missed the next step as she jumped at the sudden sound. Enji moved quickly and caught her around the middle before she could fall and hurt herself. He turned to scowl at the jovial blonde nuisance that had appeared behind them, his rival and number one hero, All Might.
All Might looked concerned as he noticed the seemingly fragile girl at Endeavor's side. She was thin and her skin ghostly pale. There were various scars on her arms and poking out of the neck of her lilac dress. One particular scar on her arm caught his eye, it was a burn in the shape of a hand that looked like it was the exact size of Endeavor's hand. She seemed to freeze up in panic by his sudden appearance. The temperature in the stairwell began to drop.
Enji looked down at his daughter in concern as he gently righted her. He kept a firm grip on her shoulder to make sure she was still upright and turned to shoot a menacing look at his rival, "All Might." His voice came out in a threatening growl. Tira still didn't do well with sudden movements or noises and the blonde menace was a recipe for disaster.
"I haven't talked to you since that press conference ten years ago. Been awhile. I saw you and figured I'd say hi." All Might continued on with a smile though his gaze lingered on the now seemingly catatonic girl at Endeavor's side. At the mention of ten years ago she was drawn back to the night Shoto had gotten his scar and her father had mistakenly thought she was responsible.
Enji felt Tira begin to tremble, he had to get her away from the loudmouth. "Did you now?" He growled at his rival, "well then, if that's all you wanted to do, we're done." His grip was firm yet gentle on Tira's shoulder as he tried to guide her safely down the stairs. "Chatting like we're old friends, what a joke" he grumbled in annoyance under his breath.
All Might let out a loud boisterous laugh and flipped through the air he dropped out of the air onto the landing before them. Tira jumped at his sudden appearance and let out a soft gasp. Her quirk activated reflexively and in the blink of an eye the entire stairwell had turned into an icy wasteland. Spears of ice shot up protectively around her. Enji swore under his breath and moved away just in time to avoid being impaled by one of the spears of ice. He threw another glare at All Might.
"Your presence isn't really necessary." Enji hissed at his rival before turning to look at Tira, she'd dropped to her knees and was cowering in her prison of ice.
All Might looked down at the girl. She'd clearly been through a great trauma. He wondered if all the Todoroki children were badly damaged. "I take it she's not your new sidekick?"
Enji glared at him again, "my daughter, Tira, not that it's any of your business."
"Is she alright?" All Might pondered.
"She's fine." Enji glowered at him before activating his quirk to get rid of the ice in the stairwell. In moments all the ice was gone save for the spears of ice protectively crisscrossing around her. The spears of ice had black cores and couldn't be melted by his flames. He sighed and knelt on the stairs, "Tira..."
Her body jerked as she came back to her senses. She peered through the prison like enclosure of ice and saw her father looking at her with concern. He extended a hand toward her. For a fleeting moment she felt a spark of terror run through her. Hesitantly she reached a shaky hand toward him and placed it in his hand. She managed to dismiss the ice around her and allowed her father to pull her to her feet.
Enji felt a grim satisfaction as Tira hid behind him and his stomach churned with guilt. The only reason she was so timid and jumpy was because of what he'd done to her. Even so he couldn't help but think it felt good that she seemed to be triggered enough by All Might's loudness that she felt safer hiding behind her father. It wasn't quite the 'one up' moment he'd been hoping to experience with his long-time rival but it would have to suffice for now.
"If you're finished upsetting my daughter with your annoying presence, we'll be on our way." Enji huffed trying to sound stern even though he was worried about Tira and wanted to get her away so he could make sure she hadn't hurt herself when she'd dropped to the ground.
"Come on, why the cold shoulder?" All Might tried again, even if it upset the girl, he'd come here for a reason. Before the press conference ten years ago when Endeavor had claimed his son would surpass him some day, he remembered another conference six years prior to that when he'd sworn his daughter Tira would surpass him. He didn't know what kind of hellish training regimen Endeavor put his children through but it appeared Tira hadn't survived it or Endeavor had learned from his mistakes and adjusted it. "You should be thrilled. After all, your son's doing very well out there, just using half his power. You must be a great teacher." He smiled at his grouchy rival though his gaze flicked to the petite white-haired girl, she'd flinched at his words.
Enji scowled, "are you implying something?" He clenched his fists at his sides as his temper began to flare.
Sensing her father was about to lose his cool, Tira fled down the stairs. She didn't like the tension between them and could feel her grip on her quirk starting to slip, if she didn't get away, she could lose control and turn the entire stadium into an ice prison. Blindly she raced down the stairs trying to find an exit. Before long she wound up on the lower level and found one of Shoto's classmates, a boy with unruly dusty blonde hair and crimson eyes, the one who'd declared he was going to win in his opening speech. He appeared to be trying to conceal his presence outside of one of the tunnels leading to the exit. She could hear voices from the end of the tunnel that carried to where they were standing. One was Shoto's! The violent boy stared at her wide eyed as she appeared before him his gaze lingering to the burned hand print on her arm. From what she'd made out of Shoto's conversation he was telling someone about their father, she assumed she must have been part of the earlier conversation. It sounded like the conversation was ending, she sprinted down the tunnel to see Shoto talking to a freckle faced boy with unruly dark green hair and bright green eyes.
"Nee-san?" Shoto blinked in awe as she ran toward him. He caught her in a hug before turning to the boy he'd been talking to, "we're done here." With that said he steered his sister out of the tunnel. It exited outside of the stadium away from all the other people. There was a vacant utility road that went around the stadium and on the opposite side of the road were some lush trees and quiet scenery.
Shoto pulled Tira away from the stadium and into the tree line. She calmed down after they were away from everyone else and sat on the plush grass. Looking at his eldest sister, Shoto noticed two new bruises on her legs and a small scrape on her left shin.
"Nee-san, you fell down again." He pointed.
Tira looked down at her legs and frowned, it must have been when she'd fallen on the stairs. Shoto knelt next to her and retrieved a small plastic container from his pocket that had adhesive bandages and antiseptic pads inside. All the Todoroki children had started carrying them on their person for Tira.
"Sorry for interrupting." Tira bowed her head as her younger brother tended to the small scrape on her leg.
"It's not something you need to apologize for." Shoto shrugged, "how come you aren't with, Dad?"
"He was talking to All Might..."
Shoto guessed based on his father's obvious hatred of the man that his father must have gotten angry and it triggered Tira enough she ran away. He nodded his understanding and decided to change the subject, "thanks for helping me with my training."
Tira smiled at her youngest brother and reached up to ruffle his two-toned hair. Shoto felt a small ghost of a smile tug at the corner of his lips. "thanks for letting me help."
"I'd be glad for your help anytime, Nee-san. Toya-nii was right, you are really strong." Shoto winced as he realized he'd said Toya's name and wasn't sure how Tira would react to it. They were twins but he'd been missing for two years. Tira had to be the most devastated of all.
"Huh?" Her cheeks reddened, "he said that?"
Shoto glanced at her curiously, that wasn't quite the reaction he'd expected, "when mom was sent away...right after you'd fainted."
"Oh."
"Sorry for bringing him up." Shoto frowned.
"Hm?" Tira tilted her head to the side in confusion, "why?"
"Doesn't it make you sad?"
"Nii-chan doesn't make me sad, he makes me happy." Tira smiled brightly as she thought of her twin.
Shoto thought for a moment, she had been doing exponentially better these past few weeks. "Nee-san...have you seen Toya-nii recently?"
Tira nodded.
"Is that why you're talking again?" He asked with a smile.
Tira thought for a moment, she hadn't really realized it but it did probably have something to do with it. "I guess so..."
Shoto tensed as he spotted their father looking irritated near the entrance of the tunnel, he and Tira had exited from not too long ago. He got to his feet and offered Tira a hand up. Noticing the shift in her brother's demeanor, Tira looked over and spotted their father. He looked irritated but also relieved to see her. His turquoise eyes instantly fell on the new bruises and the adhesive bandage on her legs.
"What do you want?" Shoto growled as their father turned his gaze to him once he realized Tira was okay.
"You're acting disgracefully, Shoto." Enji reprimanded his youngest son.
Tira frowned and looked between the two of them as both their tempers flared.
"You're the one who scared Tira away." Shoto growled.
"I'm talking about the tournament." Enji grumbled ignoring the look Tira shot in his direction. "If you simply used the power in your left side you would've had an overwhelming victory in both of the first rounds. It's time for you to stop your childish rebellion-." He cut off as a spear of ice shot toward him.
"Leave him alone." Tira said softly as she caused the ice to stop short of hitting him.
Enji stared in awe as he realized he was completely surrounded by lethal jagged spears of ice all with deadly sharp points. They all had a black core; he couldn't have melted them to save himself from getting impaled by them. He stared at his daughter in awe.
Shoto looked to his sister with wide eyes as she turned to him with a smile and reached up to ruffle his hair. "Good luck in the next round, Shoto." Tira smiled and he realized she was giving him a chance to escape.
Shoto smiled, "thanks, Nee-san." He walked away.
Once he was gone Tira dismissed her ice and looked to her father surprised to see he wasn't angry. Enji couldn't help but feel proud of her. "If you'd like to do more than just paperwork when you come to work with me, perhaps we could arrange something." He smiled as she returned to his side.
