Chapter 8 - Streets
The tenth of October had come and gone, and now it was the seventeenth. I was about ten weeks, and I was starting to show. Each week, Luke and I had looked up about how big the babies were, and we found out that for ten weeks. The babies were the sizes of grapes. I thought that was so cool.
I had talked to my mum a lot about coming in approximately two weeks. She was excited to see me again after around two years of not seeing me in person. She wanted to meet Luke too, especially since I was carrying his two babies. I had always blamed Luke when it came to cravings and when he would complain.
"Why do you have such weird cravings?" He asked.
"Why do you feel the need to question me? Don't question me. I'm pregnant. I'm going to have cravings. It's partly your fault," I put my hand on my hip.
"I know. I don't mind you being pregnant," he smiled, "but you just eat the weirdest things. Chocolate and broccoli? Together!?" I laughed and nodded.
"You don't even usually eat broccoli, though! What happened?" He looked at me weirdly.
"You impregnated me, that's what happened," I chuckled a little.
"Oh, be quiet. You're the one that's pregnant.." He turned away from me.
"Yeah, so? I can't blame my boyfriend to see the annoyed reaction that I get and that I think is so adorable," I smiled at him as he turned back towards me. I told him, "you are cute when you're annoyed."
"Yeah right," he didn't agree with me then decided to walk into what we had as the nursery now. When my mum came, she'd have to sleep on the futon in the living room.
"Luke, what are you doing?" I asked him, walking into the nursery behind him.
"Just... looking. Thinking," he smiled, sitting on the rocker that we already had in there.
"I love you," I told him, putting my hand on one of the cribs. We had gotten plain dark wooden ones, just in case the test was wrong and it was two boys.
"I love you too," he stood up again and walked over to me, putting his arms around me from behind and placing his hands on my stomach.
I heard my phone ring, so I walked out of the nursery and into the living room to pick up my phone off of the side table. I clicked accept, seeing that it was my mum.
"Hey mum," I answered it.
"Hi sweetie. How are you?" She asked, meaning me and the babies.
"I'm great, we're great," I corrected myself, laughing a little.
"That's good. I was wondering, though, if it would be okay if I didn't come until November 14th.. I want to stay home for Veterans Day because of my dad, your pap," she explained, and I accepted.
"Yeah, that would be fine," I smiled.
"And since I'll be there over Thanksgiving.. Is it okay if your dad and your grandparents come down for Thanksgiving? They can get a hotel, though," she offered, and again, after talking to Luke about it, we accepted.
"We'd love to have the whole family here for Thanksgiving!" I got excited since it had been a while since I had Thanksgiving with all of my family.
"Even if Aunt Mary and Uncle Walter come down with Parker? Aunt Trish, Uncle Carson, and the kids?"
"Um.. Yeah, I guess. You'd have to help me make everything though," I laughed. At Thanksgiving, I'd be only sixteen weeks, but I still didn't want to have all of the stress of making everything and getting everything perfect.
"That's great!" She exclaimed, "I can't wait to come to see you guys!"
"We can't wait to have you either! But just remember, you'll probably be helping a lot.." I told her, chuckling some.
"I'll be fine with that. I'll do whatever you guys need me to, especially since you're providing me a place to stay for a month," she laughed, agreeing to my comment.
"Thank you mum. I'll see you soon," I smiled.
"Okay, sweetie. I love you! Bye," she ended the call.
"Thanksgiving is going to be crazy.." Luke sighed. I nodded.
"I think I should go get groceries this afternoon.. Don't you think?" I looked in the refrigerator.
"Maybe. You want me to go with you?" He asked. I nodded, "please? It's a lot easier."
"What do you mean 'it's a lot easier'?"
"I mean that when I go without you and come back, you always say that you wanted something else. Then, I have to go back to the store and get it for you."
"I'll go with you. Unless you want me to go for you," he offered. I shook my head, "it'll be fine. I'll go too. Let's get going."
He agreed and put on his shoes while I put on mine. I grabbed my small purse and we left to go about three blocks away to the grocery store.
We were a block and a half away from the apartment when I saw a woman far up on the sidewalk who I thought I recognized. The distance between us shrank, and I pointed to her, showing Luke.
"I think it's Sister Jude," I told him. He nodded, "it's her.. It is Sister Jude. What if she recognizes us?"
"I- I don't know," I tried to look down, but right as I did, I saw her look at me. I was worried that she had recognized me.
When we got closer, I looked up quickly and saw her looking at me, as if she didn't believe I was alive or that Luke was either.
"Annamarie.. Luke.." She called us. We looked up and smiled. I put a hand on my stomach as we walked over to her.
"Hi," I smiled, yet I was still worried.
"Was it you two who wanted to shut down the asylum? No, a more important question.. How are you two alive?" She looked sternly at us.
"Well.. We planned our escape very carefully," I explained to her every detail, and Luke hit my shoulder slightly.
"Wow," she shook her head, not believing it. We just looked at each other for a while. I didn't know what to say, and I don't think she did either.
"Are you two together now?" She asked after what seemed like an eternity of not saying anything.
"Yeah," Luke nodded, putting his arm around me.
"That's nice," Jude nodded. She looked at my stomach. It seemed like she didn't want to ask.
"So why are you in Australia?" I wondered.
"Since the asylum has shut down, I've decided to come stay with my family here for a while. They live about ten miles away, but I just love it around these places. I haven't been here in decades," she looked around, "what about you guys?"
"Well.. We live here now. Ever since we escaped from the asylum. We came here with the money I had saved up before I got put into the asylum. We're both glad we got out. That was torture," I scowled at her.
"You both deserved it," she said through gritted teeth.
"Luke was falsely put in there, and you know it. You've known it all along. You chose an innocent nineteen year old, so he would cover up your crimes," I spat, "you chose him because he was mad at one of your victims."
Luke just stood there, watching. He seemed surprised at what I was saying, but he just stood there. Sister Jude fought back, "maybe I killed the others, but I never killed Michael."
"Ha!" I exclaimed. She had admitted to being Bloodyface. (A/N: /Spoiler Alert!!!/ I know that Sister Jude wasn't Bloodyface, that Dr. Thredson was, but for this, I wanted Sister Jude to be Bloodyface so.. yeah. That's what I made happen.)
"Plus, for me being put in there, Dillon was not my fault!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah. Whatever you say," she scoffed, "and I know this is off topic.."
I waited for her to continue. It seemed like she had forgotten everything she was thinking about not asking earlier, and she did anyways, "are you pregnant?"
"Yeah.. Twins. I'm ten weeks," I told her, and her mouth dropped open.
"In the asylum?" She gasped, and I nodded.
"It was nice seeing you two," she said quickly and un-meaningfully before continuing down the street.
