Chapter 6 - Liz
September 14, 2015
After two weeks of being in Australia, I had a part time job at a local restaurant which was right around the corner from the apartment, and Luke was working at a pizza place about two blocks away. We had been working for about a week and a half now. We didn't need a car for anything, really. We were within walking distance from our work. We could just walk down a block or two to get groceries. We could get anything else from the outlets just three blocks away. There was also a bus in case we needed to go anywhere farther away, or if we didn't feel like walking.
When Luke got home from work, we always watched a few shows before eating. We began looking for a show after I had gotten back from the bathroom.
"What do you want to watch?" He asked.
"I don't know. Anything."
"Friends?" He smiled.
"Sure. Two episodes, then I'll start supper."
"Okay," he agreed. When the first episode was almost over, I told him to pause it, but he asked why.
"I need to go to the bathroom, just pause it," I told him. He nodded, and when I came back, we finished it, then watched a second episode.
I had made supper after that, and when it was ready, I told Luke to wash his hands before eating, like we always do. I went to the bathroom and washed my hands before joining him at the table.
"So.. How was your work today?" He asked.
"Pretty busy. What about yours?"
"It was okay. Since today's a Monday, we don't have as big of a rush as we do on, like, Friday's or Saturday's."
"Yeah," I nodded.
We had finished our spaghetti, and I washed up our plates and utensils. I was actually getting used to life in Australia. I liked it. I walked over to Luke and asked him if he wanted to go out and do something, like watch a movie.
He agreed, so I grabbed my small purse and we left. We decided to take the bus since the movie theater was about three miles away, and we didn't feel like walking it.
When we got to the movie theater, we looked at the movies and chose one. I didn't exactly want to see it, but it looked like a good movie. It was horror, and it had just come out about a week before. The Visit is what we saw. (A/N: I haven't seen it, so no spoilers please!)
Halfway through the movie, I got scared and held onto Luke tightly. He wrapped his arm around me and kissed my forehead before telling me I'd be alright. I smiled and nodded. God, I loved him so much.
"I love you, Luke.." I whispered.
"I love you too," he smiled, and we continued watching the movie.
Every once in a while, I would ask Luke for the large popcorn or soda that we had gotten. I also had gummy bears, and I ate two every time I got scared. I was out of them before the movie was even three-quarters over. Luke shared some of his with me. It really was a good movie, though. I think that it's good to watch scary movies sometimes, or else the movies I watch get boring, and they're just the same-old, same-old.
We took the bus back home, and right after we got back into the apartment, Luke pushed me against the back of the door and smashed his lips onto mine. I kissed him back, with force. He smirked as we walked into the living room to watch some Full House on Netflix before going to sleep.
------
The next morning, I woke up, and I didn't feel very good. I felt like I had a cold. I threw up a little bit, and Luke told me that I should stay home from work.
"No," I told him, "I can go to work. If I absolutely need to, I can come home early and rest."
"Annamarie, babe.. I don't think they'll want you sick all over the food."
"I won't be. I'll take some medicine, and I'll be fine. I've never been sick for long. It always lasts an hour or two in the morning, then goes away. I'll be fine," I told Luke and smiled.
"Okay.. If you say so, babe.." He smiled at me and walked out of the bedroom. I heard him moving around in the kitchen, but then he came back in a few minutes later with a tray. It had two pieces of toast on it, with Vegemite, which I had grown to like in the past two weeks. He had also gotten me some hot chocolate, and had given me two pills for a cold. I thanked him, and he kissed me. Then he walked into the bathroom to shower.
I ate the toast and drank the hot chocolate, then took the pills. I heard Luke turn the shower off. He walked into the room with a towel on his head, with him moving it around with his hands to dry off his hair. He smiled at me when he saw me looking.
"Do you want me to make you feel better?" Luke asked.
"Not right now.. Maybe later," I smirked, "I've got to shower. You get dressed."
Surprisingly, Luke and I had never had sex, except for that time in the bakery. Despite what we had done in the asylum, we don't want our relationship to be physical. Ever since we moved to Australia, we've decided to have a relationship based on love, not lust. I liked that. I was okay with it.
I got into the shower and heard Luke begin to sing. I smiled at the sound of his voice. He sang a lot, and I loved it, even though he really only sings when he thinks I can't hear, but I can, and I love his voice. I don't tell him that often enough.
When I was done in the shower, I dried off and walked into the room, where Luke was in his "Pete's Pizza's" shirt and a pair of jeans. I began to get dressed as he talked to me.
"I don't want to have this job much longer, but I can't get a much better job because I didn't go to college," he frowned.
"You can go to college, I won't mind. I can work, and you can go to college. Being a waitress doesn't bother me," I told him.
He smiled, "maybe I could take college courses online. That would save us a lot of money, and I could still live here."
"Yeah," I nodded, "but you're still working at the pizza place, so you need to get going. I won't be too far behind you."
"Okay. I'll see you this afternoon, babe.." He whispered in my ear as he kissed my cheek, "I hope you feel better by then."
He began to walk out of the apartment, and he yelled to me, "I love you!" I yelled it back, "I love you too!"
I grabbed my purse and pulled my hair into a bun before leaving the apartment and walking around the corner to work.
I actually did end up leaving early. I just really didn't feel very good. I didn't call Luke. I didn't want to worry him. I would just stay home by myself.
------
*Luke's POV*
I was walking home, and I wondered if Annamarie had stayed the whole day at work or not. She seemed to be pretty miserable when she woke up this morning, and a little less so when I left for work. Who knows?
I walked into the apartment and yelled, "BABY, I'M HOME-"
I heard her throwing up in the bathroom. I closed the door and ran to the bathroom. I held her hair back.
"Are you okay, now?" I asked when she was done. She shrugged, "I don't know.."
"What do you mean you don't know? Are you done throwing up? I can get your toothbrush out for you," I told her. She shook her head, "I don't know. I'm still nauseous.."
"I'm sorry, baby," I frowned, then hugged her and kissed her forehead.
"Luke.." she sighed, "look on my night stand."
I walked to the bed and looked down at her nightstand. There sat two pregnancy tests, and both were positive. My mouth dropped open in shock. I grabbed them and walked back towards Annamarie, who was still in the bathroom.
"These?" I asked her, and she nodded.
"But we haven't-"
"The bakery," she reminded me. I nodded.
"Oh yeah.." I remembered.
"What are we going to do?" She asked, looking at me worriedly, "I'd only be about five and a half weeks, but I'm already showing! You can tell! I just noticed that today.."
She turned to the side and lifted up her shirt. I could see that she did already have a teeny tiny baby bump.
"Oh my god," I placed my hand on her stomach and smiled, "is that bad?"
"I don't know," she shrugged. I didn't know about her, but I was sort of excited.
"Are you excited, at all?" I asked.
"Yeah, a little, I guess," she nodded.
"I am," I hugged her. I then crouched down in front of her baby bump, "hi baby, I'm your daddy.. I can't wait to meet you in a few months. You better not hurt your mommy too much, okay? I love you," I whispered.
"I love you so much, Lucas," Annamarie told me. I stood up again and kissed her.
"I love you too," I smiled.
"What are our parents going to say?" She asked me.
*Annamarie's POV*
"I don't know. But my parents don't even know about you yet. I haven't told them I'm not dead and that I moved to Australia.."
"Oh yeah. But what about my parents?" I asked, pouting.
"I don't know. We'll tell them sometime. It'll be fine, don't worry," he assured me. I smiled.
"Do you want to go get a scan? I want to see the baby. And I want to ask a doctor if I should be this big at only five and a half weeks," I told Luke. He nodded, agreeing with me. I smiled, and we left.
We walked there because the hospital was only about two blocks away. I was happy about that. We got there within a few minutes.
We got into one of the rooms for a scan, and a nurse walked in behind us. She smiled as she got the ultrasound equipment out. She put cold gel on my stomach and moved the wand around. She looked at the screen, then back at Luke and me. She cocked her head to the side, and I wondered what was wrong.
I was really scared, especially because of the last time I was pregnant. I had a miscarriage. I didn't want that to happen again. Hopefully it won't. I really don't want to go through the disappointment of another miscarriage.
"You guys might not know this, but after this pregnancy, you will have a family of four," she smiled at us, "you're having twins."
"Did you hear that, Annamarie? Twins!" Luke smiled excitedly. I smiled back, yet a little less enthusiastically. I was excited, yes, but we were only nineteen. And twins? That was going to be hard.
"Yeah," I nodded. The nurse pointed to the screen, showing us baby A and baby B. The smile never left Luke's face. His hand was held in mine throughout the whole appointment. I loved the fact that he was so happy about becoming a dad. I was happy that I was going to become a mom, too, but he seemed a lot happier than I was.
"I love you," he whispered in my ear as we left the room after getting our copies and getting my stomach cleaned off.
After arriving back home, Luke and I ate, then sat on the couch before debating whether to watch something or to just talk. We decided to talk. He wanted to talk about names, even though I wasn't even six weeks.
"We need to think of two boys' names and two girls' names," he told me. I nodded.
"I like the name Oliver for a boy," I came up with.
"Oliver.. Jackson!" Luke exclaimed. I smiled. I liked that. I then suggested, "what about Samuel, as a middle name. That would be a nice middle name." Luke nodded.
"I like Grayson as a first name. That's a cute first name," Luke told me and I agreed, asking, "Grayson Samuel?" He nodded.
"Now for girls.. I like Morgan."
"Morgan Hemmings is cute!" Luke smiled, "what about my mom's name as the middle name? Morgan Elizabeth," he looked at me, nodding.
"What about another name?" I asked him. He shrugged, "Makenna is a cute name."
"Yeah!" I exclaimed, "Makenna! Makenna.." I thought about a middle name for about a minute, "Claire? Makenna Claire?"
"Yes! I love it," Luke kissed my stomach because I was lying on the couch while he was sitting. My legs were laid across his lap, and my head was on the arm rest. I had my shirt pulled up a little, and I had my hands on my stomach. Luke took my hands that were on my stomach and kissed them.
"I love you," he whispered, as he does a lot.
"I love you too," I told him back.
"What are you doing with my son?" I heard from around the door.
"Who are y-" I began to speak when Luke cut me off.
"Mom!" He exclaimed, running up to her.
"How are you? How'd you find us?"
"I'm good, and I talked to this one lady that told me she knew that you were living in Australia now, and she told me your address," the woman smiled at him, "but who is 'us'?"
"Mom, this is Annamarie," he smiled. I got up from the couch after pulling my shirt down and walked over to them.
"Hi," I smiled, "you must be Liz." Luke had briefly told me about his parents.
"I am. And you're Annamarie?" She asked, so I nodded. She continued, "but what are you doing here with my son?"
"Mom, we met in the asylum. We escaped together a week later and told the police about the terrible stuff that was going on there. They shut it down just about two days ago," Luke explained, "but Annamarie and I.. we're dating."
"Oh. But could you tell me why you were lying on the couch with your shirt up?" She looked towards me.
"Uh," I looked at Luke, giving him a look that said, 'back me up, here!'.
"Mom, um, Annamarie is pregnant.." Luke looked down.
"What? How long have you been dating? You were only taken to the asylum three and a half weeks ago!"
"Officially, we've been dating two weeks. Annamarie is five and a half weeks.." Luke looked at me. I gave him a reassuring smile.
"Oh my god," she put her hand on her forehead, "so you guys had sex almost right after you met?"
"Yes, but we haven't since. I can promise you that. We didn't want a physical relationship. We stopped after that time," I told her.
"I- I don't know what to say," Liz looked at both of us.
"It's twins," Luke blurted.
"Twins!?" Liz looked at him, her eyes bulging.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Wow.." Liz looked down, "how are you going to handle twins?"
"I don't know," Luke shrugged. I sighed.
"Did you get an ultrasound yet?" Liz asked, smiling.
"Yeah, just today. Annamarie just found out this afternoon after leaving work early, and she told me when I got home from work. Then we went for an ultrasound," Luke picked up the ultrasound copies from the counter.
"You guys are working?"
"Well, yeah, but mainly, it's just to keep us occupied during the day. I like the fact that I'm earning money, though. I going to do online college courses online soon, so I can get a better job," Luke told her.
"What do you mean 'it's mainly just to occupy you during the day'?" Liz asked.
"When I was little, my parents were really rich, and every week, ever since I was two, they'd give me a thousand dollars. They stopped when I was ten, but I had saved up most of the money. After that, they gave me a smaller allowance, and I got some money from my grandparents for doing good in school. I had saved up all of the money in a safe under my bed, and it totaled up to six hundred thousand dollars," I explained to Liz, then told her to close her eyes and plug her ears. I didn't want anyone but Luke knowing where we kept the money. I got the money out of the freezer and opened the safe. I told Liz she could open here ears and eyes.
"Six hundred thousand, minus some. We've used some of it. That's what we've used for the rent for the past two weeks and to get food. We also got Luke clothes since we didn't bother bringing any from America," I told her.
She looked at the money in shock, "oh my god.."
"Yeah," I nodded, "my parents used to be super rich. Now, I'd say they're still rich, just not as much as they used to be."
"Still.. Wow," her mouth was still open. I closed up the safe and had Liz close her eyes and ears again. I put the money in the freezer.
"Well.. Now for the reason I really came here," Liz began, "I really just wanted to make sure you were alright, Luke, but I also have always wanted to come to Australia so.. Can I stay with you guys for a month? I know it's so much to ask but-"
"Sure," Luke nodded, giving me the look that told me not to worry.
"Thank you guys so much. That way I won't have to spend money on a hotel," she smiled, "and I get to stay with you guys."
"Yeah," Luke smiled back at her, and so did I. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Liz seemed like a pretty cool mom. I was already starting to like her.
"Now.. Tell me more about these twins," Liz got excited, and we walked over to the couch.
~
Here's a longer one for you guys! Over 3,100 words! You have no idea how much time I spent on this.. You're welcome:)
