Chapter 17 - Night Out
July 15, 2017
Four months after Luke and I were married, I found out that I was pregnant, and I was five weeks along. I couldn't be happier, but in a few months, we'd have two almost two-year-olds and a new baby. That would be quite the work, but it would be worth it. Luke is so good with Morgan and Makenna. I can't wait to see the look on his face when I tell him I'm having another baby.
I was waiting until his birthday so I could tell him. I wanted to tell him over dinner. We had already asked Ashton, Calum, and Michael to watch Makenna and Morgan at the apartment so Luke and I could go out to eat. Thankfully, they agreed.
Luke kept asking me if I wanted to go to a certain place to eat. I said repeatedly, every time he asked, "I don't care where we go. It's your birthday, and you should pick."
I had decided to tell Luke that I was going to the store while the girls were asleep. I really wanted to go get an ultrasound so I could show him the next night.
I walked a few blocks down to the hospital and walked in, asking for an appointment. I was told that I could get in just five minutes later, and I agreed before filling out paperwork.
A nurse had called me in to a room a few minutes later. I had done the normal procedures as I had done when I was pregnant it's Makenna and Morgan, and I got some copies of my five-week ultrasound.
On my way home, I thought I'd stop at the store and pick up some of the things we needed so Luke would know that I did go to the store. I'll just tell him that I couldn't find some of the things right away. He'll understand.
When I got back to the apartment, I was right. Luke had asked why I was away for almost thirty minutes just to go to the store to get a few things. I told him what I had figured I'd say, then put the new groceries away and hid the ultrasound copies where I knew he wouldn't find them.
I put them in the one cupboard in the bathroom where I keep my "girl items", as Luke calls them. He won't look in there, so I knew they were safe.
------
Luke had gotten sort of suspicious about me being pregnant. If he wasn't suspicious, it really did seem like it. He had told me I was acting weird. Maybe I was beause I was trying to hide the fact that I was pregnant. I have no idea what he was thinking, though.
Ashton, Michael, and Calum had arrived at our apartment to stay there for the evening to keep Makenna and Morgan. Luke and I were ready to leave, so we told the boys the procedures, wrote them down just in case, and we told them to call us if there was a problem.
After Luke and I left, I felt good having a night out, not having to worry about two small children and what they were doing and how that would affect our night. This was Luke's birthday and our night out, so I wanted to enjoy it as much as I could.
We went to a really nice restaurant and got seated before ordering. I just got a water which must have seemed odd to Luke. Usually when we go out, I get wine or maybe champagne, but I couldn't now. Even if I could, I really didn't feel like having those drinks.
We ordered our meals, and I was getting ready to tell Luke, but I decided I'd wait until we were done eating so we could talk about things other than a new baby most of the night.
Most of the night, we had been talking about the most random things. We tried to keep the topic on us and not on Morgan or Makenna. I wasn't sure if I was ready to tell him or not, but we were both done eating.
"Do you want to leave?" He suggested.
"No, not quite yet. I want to stay here just for a little longer.. I want to talk about something."
"What is it? Is it bad?" He questioned, worriedly. I assured him it wasn't bad, and he breathed, relieved.
"I-" I began, trying to think of how to put it. I didn't know how to tell him. It was really easy last time, but now, I had no idea how to tell him.
"What?" He asked, right before my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID, and it was Michael. That couldn't be good.
"It's Michael," I announced to Luke, then answered the phone, "hello?" There was a panicking Michael on the other end of the phone. No..
"Hey, Annamarie!" He exclaimed. I could tell that he was stressed and was trying to hide it. He wasn't hiding it well enough.
"Michael, what's wrong? Is something wrong with one of the twins?" I asked, and he hesitated.
"No," he answered, and I rolled my eyes. Why would he be calling then? Maybe he can't find something.
"It's both of them, actually," he told me, and I panicked, yelling, "we'll be home right away!"
"Good," he started, but I told him goodbye and hung up. I grabbed my purse. I told Luke we were leaving. We paid quickly and left. What could be wrong with them?
Michael called me back right after Luke and I had got on the bus. I answered, knowing he was going to try to explain.
"What's going on Michael?" I asked him. He began explaining, as I had predicted, "um, Makenna threw up not too long ago, and Morgan threw up right after Makenna. The couch is a mess, and the floor is getting better. Thankfully the floor is hardwood, and the couch is leather, but there's baby throw up in the couch.."
"Don't worry about it. We're halfway home, and we'll be there to help. What do you think caused it?"
"Well.. The only thing we fed them was the sweet potato baby food in the fridge."
"Did you check the expiration date?" I asked him, knowing that it was probably expired.
"No.. And now that I do, it says 01/17," he sighed. I told him Luke and I would be there soon to help. There goes our full night together and me telling Luke over dinner. Maybe I could kill two birds with one stone and tell Luke the same time as the boys?
