Chapter 1

The glass showered the asylum floors as heart wrenching screams echoed into the night. Vicious cackles silenced all disturbances so that only the sound of liquid dripping could be heard. The terrified intruder fled to the safety of their car. Slamming the door; they turned the key in the ignition. It wouldn't start. Banging their sweaty palms on the steering wheel, a movement in the rear-view mirror caught their eye. Gasping, they turned to find the back of the car empty. Hyperventilating, they frantically tried to start the engine. Ice formed on the windows making a scratching sound. A single handprint was left on the driver's window. CLICK! The locks went down on their own. Try as they might the driver could not unlock the doors. Slapping the windows in fear, they desperately called out into the night.

"Help! Please somebody help me!" they begged.

An ear splitting noise choked the driver. It sounded like nails on a chalk board and was making its way around the car. The car headlights suddenly turned revealing a tall man who was hidden in the shadows. His clothes were old-fashioned and stained with blood. In his hand was a meat mallet. Screaming, the driver once again tried to start the car. Looking back up, the man was gone. He appeared to have vanished into thin air. The driver breathed a sigh of relief. Before the driver could figure out where the man had gone, the locks finally unlocked. Trying the car one last time, the driver decided to give up and risk facing the stranger once more. Dripping with precipitate they timidly searched the surrounding woods for a source of communication. Unfortunately for the driver the wood had no telephone lines. Spotting a welcoming glow out of the corner of their eye, the driver willed their legs to carry them to a homely cottage. Knocking on the rotting door the driver began to wonder if they were making a wise decision. They breathed a sigh of relief when an elderly woman answered the door.

"Oh you poor thing. Come in" she cooed. The driver followed the woman into the warmth. "I'll just make you a cup of tea dear"

The driver looked around at the various photographs on the wall. The driver got the feeling the old lady had lived in the cottage for many years. China cups clattered against each other as the lady tottered into the living room.

"Here you go" she smiled.

"Thank you" the driver smiled.

The pair began a conversation about the various pictures. Whilst the elderly woman was explaining a photo of a young couple the front door swung open.

"Oh that must be my husband Henry" she smiled.

As if on cue the man with the meat mallet stomped into the room. Gasping, the driver stood up from where they were sitting.

"It's you!" they cried.

Looking around for a way to escape they began to sob. As the sobs filled the now menacing cottage the man moved closer to the driver raising the mallet above his head. The driver's screams were cut short as the mallet smacked the side of their head with a bone crushing force.

"Henry!" the old woman gasped "Now look what you've done. How many times have I got to tell you not to hit them so hard? She was perfect for some experiments I had in mind." The old lady walked over the other side of the room and bent to pick up the driver's head. "Oh well waste not want not. Goodnight Louise, you whore"

Smiling, the old lady carried the head into the kitchen. "Henry can you bring the body in here then clean up the mess. You better dispose of the car as well and her phone." The lady instructed shaving Louise's hair off.

"Of course Martha" Henry grinned dragging the body behind him.

While Henry was cleaning the mess Martha skinned Louise and stored her organs and hair in separate jars. Humming a song to herself, Martha began to make a pie using Louise's heart and brain. Her finger and toe nails and her teeth were put in a small box for Martha to make jewellery with later on. To pass time as the pie was baking, Martha mopped the blood up into a jug to give to her 'guests' in the asylum. The door clicked shut acknowledging Henry's presence in the cottage.

"What you gonna do with the hair this time Martha?" Henry asked.

"Well I was thinking since the weather's getting a bit chilly I'd make them hats, gloves and scarfs with all the hair I've collected" Martha beamed.

The pair laughed as the timer pinged announcing the pie was finished.

"Louise please answer the phone. I'm sorry I shouted. Please I'm worried about you" Michael sighed into his girlfriend's answer machine. Slumping down onto the sofa he rested his head into his hands and sobbed. Him and Louise had had many arguments but the argument last night was by far the worst. They'd both said things they shouldn't have, but it wasn't like Louise to not answer her phone no matter how angry she was. Michael's phone vibrated on the coffee table. Grabbing it he didn't even look at the caller ID before answering.

"Louise?" he asked, hopefully.

"Michael have you forgotten something?" a woman's voice snapped at him from down the phone.

"Mum I can't talk right now" Michael scowled.

"You are still coming for dinner tonight aren't you?" she begged.

"I don't know right now. At the moment I'm waiting for Louise to call me back."

"Oh for goodness sake Michael you're much better off without her. You should forget about her and find someone else." His mother sneered.

Glaring at a wall Michael hung up on his mother furious at her suggestion. He ignored the next two times his mum called knowing it was just to have a go at him for hanging up, but the third time he snapped.

"For God sake mum leave me alone!" he yelled.

A demonic laugh whooshed into his ear.

"Having an argument with mummy are we Michael. That's too bad. You see I have your precious girlfriend stood right next to me. I was hoping you'd love her enough to come down here but I guess I was wrong. Don't worry I'll make sure she's comfortable" the male voice laughed viciously at Michael's stunned silence. Regaining his composure, fear flooded Michael.

"What have you done to her? I swear if you've hurt one hair on her head I'll kill you!" he screamed down the phone.

Once again a vile laugh sounded down the phone.

"Don't worry her hair is quite safe I'd be worried 'bout the rest of her if I were you" the voice replied.

Before Michael could respond the line clicked to an end. Fear trembled inside his tall frame. He didn't know what to do. Should he call the police? Or should he find the asshole that called him and kill him for him vile words? Looking at his phone he knew calling the police was not an option. He could save his girlfriend himself without the help of the law. Quickly putting his shoes and jacket on he stormed out the house. He did not even bother to lock his front door behind him, instead leaving the door slightly ajar. Slamming the door of his Ford Mondeo he turned the key in the ignition and sped off. Where to though? He had no idea where the call had come from. Slamming the breaks he cursed under his breath. Pulling his phone out he decided to see how long the number had called for. 40 minutes including the deep breathing throughout. Sighing, Michael realised he had no choice but to go to the police. He knew he would not be able to find Louise without their help.
