Simple Routines

The first time Brook's had all the containments in one area together, he was prepared for the worst. But that was years ago. It was panic from the soldiers who had no idea what to expect then and fury and excitement from the containments, like wolves who smelled blood and fear.

Now...Well, there was still fear but he believed at least some soldiers were grasping onto sanity for dear life. It didn't stop them from watching them with eagle eyes, their itchy, trigger fingers waiting to pull back.

Brook's had found Zane to be most surprised the first time he witnessed all - well, most containments all together in the square. A lunch room inside the building with sunlight coming through the glass ceiling and a couple items so as to appease the containments from acting out too much.

It didn't help the soldiers when the containments liked to tease them by watching back and scaring the soldiers shitless. Georgie Van was particularly notorious for it. It didn't help that he jumped heights that were particularly unnatural for an ordinary human, jumping up towards them with a clown-like grin to play peek-a-boo.

It was miracle he hadn't been shot at again.

Not that the first time stopped him anyway.

Zane never missed these group get-togethers at least once a week we had. He found it fascinating and he enjoyed watching the dynamics the containments had with one another. All Brook's saw was that they had one thing in common that made them stick together.

Zane seemed to see more. He never stopped writing in that notebook of his. Just like he was now.

"What do you see now?" Brook's queried and it took a moment for Zane to reply, baring looking away from his notepad as he leaned over the bars to look down into the square.

"A lot more than you would if you all weren't so cynical."

"We have to be, for our lives."

"I wonder why."

A tense silence came between the two men as they kept most their attention on the containments hanging in the square below. They mostly kept to each their own, though some partnered up together. The kids, Yumi and Hughey stayed together, playing the corner with their toys they brought along and laughing amongst each other. Even Brook's couldn't help the warm smile at the sight of that, it was still painful to witness this situation.

Others lingered around, kept to themselves. The only one who didn't show was Sybil who remained in her quarters hidden beneath the writhing reptiles within. Some had started to wonder if the serpentine bodies were actually starting to grow like a rising tide pool.

Brook's didn't want to know or question that just yet.

Of those to worry about, Sybil was the one who kept to herself and didn't try anything. That just made her more frightening to everyone.

Zane didn't seem to be frightened of anyone.

Nothing fazed him.

"Does anything faze you?" Brook's asked Zane who acted as though he didn't quite hear the question until his expression faltered and a strange look passed over the Doc's face.

Something dark and ferocious. It sent a chill down Brook's spine.

"I can't ever show if I'm fazed or shook up in this job. It's a job. Nothing more nothing less." Zane turned slowly to Brook's with a cool glare. "But I'm...only human."

Brook's didn't answer just turned back to the crowd below where many of the containments watched them as warily as the soldiers watched them.
