Chapter One: A New Start
I sighed, wistfully staring at my arm, moonlight filtering through thin curtains, casting its rays on me. The same pestering and negative thoughts filled my mind, as I traced circles on my skin. Am I a malfunction? I don't have any soulmate features. I mean, no necklace given at birth, no halved tattoo, no words written on my wrist, nor a watch. And I can clearly see colours, so what is my soulmate function?
I shook my head, disbanding the thoughts. Tomorrow will be my first day at Celestial High as a Senior, and I should really look positively towards this event, but although I am physically prepared, mentally I am not. Today was the second day of moving into the new house. I helped my parents move furniture into the living room, and boxes of my own items into my room. The two story house was a few blocks down the road of my high school, which I was glad for, because I wouldn't have to wake my parents up, or take a crowded school bus to school. My arms were sore from lifting all the boxes into my room, yet to be emptied. I wanted another day to completely settle but my parents for some unknown reason were in quite the rush to have me leave the house, and spend seven hours every weekday for the next ten months.
Shrugging it off, I close my silver curtains, restricting my room off of natural light. After closing the window to further prevent insects or debris from flying in while I was unconscious, I shut off the lamp light on my nightstand, and toppled onto my bed, tucking myself beneath the sheets as I held a grey pillow close to me. My mind was bombarded with high school scenarios until I was able to drift off into a dreamless slumber.
"-ME, SINGING FROM THE HEART ACHE FROM THE PAIN, TA-" The radio alarm clock screamed at me, jolting me awake immediately. My left hand scrambled against the machine until I was able to shut the music down. The flashing red numbers on the horrendous device read:
8:00 AM.
On a normal day, I would've enjoyed the alternative rock song by Imagine Dragons, but this was no normal day. Today is the day I'm going to a new school.
In my hast, I didn't notice that I've woken my puppy, a male corgi with a small black star in the middle of his forehead. He must've rested beside me in the midst of my slumber. He stared up to me, his eyes were like a galaxy trapped in a globe. He shook his midnight black fur sprinkled with silver, shaking off his drowsiness. Before hopping onto my lap, rubbing his head against my hand for attention. "Aww, come here Siri, who's a good boy, who's a good boy?" I cooed quietly, scratching his body, and nuzzling his head.
"Sorry bud, but I've got to get ready for school" I picked up his plump fluffy figure, placing him onto the wooden floor. Pulling the blankets off me, I headed into the washroom to brush my teeth, and to expel excess waste that built up whilst asleep. When I exited, Sirius held his paw up onto my knee, using it as a post to stretch on. I ruffled his head. I smiled at him, before entering the closet where an outfit (planned a week in advance) hung.
"Tut tut," I waved my finger in front of his snout, "Only soulmates allowed." I winked before closing the door on him and changing.

The slightly cool breeze tossed my pre-combed dark caramel locks as I departed from my new home. I huffed in annoyance, having to constantly pull my long bangs from my face. I hid my small hands into my sleeves appreciative of the slightly oversized dark grey sweater's comfort, as I trudged along the pathway to the building students are forcefully mobbed towards. As I arrived, I was greeted and escorted by a a tall silver-haired woman in a professional uniform. She was the principal's personal assistance, and she led me straight towards the office.
"Here you are Ms. Capricorn. If you have any further concern, please do not hesitate to contact myself, or Mr. Sun." The assistant said, bowing before excusing herself and closing the door quietly.
"Ah Ms. Capricornus, how do you like Celestial High so far?" A fairly old blonde man questioned, leaning forward onto his desk.
"It's..." I paused, "Well, I haven't met anyone or talked to anyone yet seeing as I was brought here immediately upon arrival, but I like how spacious the corridors are, my old school was very small and crowed." I explained, reminiscing on the times I've fallen because people who were in a rush didn't 'see' me.
"I see, well here is your schedule," He plucked out a sheet of paper from a pile, and handed it to me. "And your locker number, and combo." He brought out a yellow sticky note with small neat writing presenting the information. Scanning over my schedule, I noticed most of my subjects were AP. "Hello! May you bring Ms. Aquarius down to the office? Yes, Ms. Aquarius." Mr. Sun spoke into the school's service phone. "Seeing as you're new to this school, and town, I would like to address a partner to you to show you around. Her name is Aquarius, and I believe she shares a few classes with you" He explained.
Soon enough, the door was opened by the personal assistance, and in came a fairly short girl, a few inches shorter than me. She had wavy light golden brown hair which reached down to her shoulder blades, with small black rectangular spectacles adorning her features. A heavy amount of freckles were brushed over her cheeks as she smiled her pearly whites at me. She wore a purple blouse with the NASA logo on it, and a pair of skinny jeans.
"Hi! My name is Aquarius, but you can call me Aqua if you'd like!" She chirped, waving her hand in greeting, her blue-green orbs meeting my golden brown ones. I sighed, realizing she has a soulmate, with the black outline of words embedded into her palm. "Well that's kind of rude," her hand lowered. She was clearly offended.
"I'm so sorry!! I didn't mean it to be rude, it's just, I saw your palm and you must have a soulmate!" I blabbered, trying my best to not scare her away or offend her more.
"Oh? Did you want me to be your soulmate or something?" She spoke with a serious tone, and raised her eyebrows. Before I could reply, she let out a light chuckle. "I'm just teasing ya, let's get going shall we...?"
"Capricorn." She looked at me as though expecting me to add on. "Just Capricorn." I finalized.

"Okay so on your schedule it says.. oh? You have the Soulmate class too??" Aquarius's ocean-like eyes scanned over my schedule as we exited the office and started my quick tour of the school.
"Um, I'm guessing you're in it too?" I asked, attempting to make light conversation.
"You know what it is right?" She questioned.
"Yup, where students who haven't found their soulmate are mandatory to be a part of in hopes to find their soulmate. " I gave a brief answer, hoping this conversation would end. It was never the topic I like to talk about.
"Yeah, I mean it's surprising seeing as I have one of the obvious features, see?" She opened the palm of her right hand, and tattooed onto her skin were: 'What the fuck is this shit?'
"He seems... either violent minded, or well, someone who curses a lot" I observed, taking back the sheet of paper.
"What's yours?" The water bearer asked.
"What's what?"
"Your soulmate feature, silly!"
"I um... I don't have one.." I muttered quickly and quietly underneath my breath.
"Sorry?" She leaned closer to me.
"I don't have one!!" I repeated, quickening my pace to escape the suffocating atmosphere. Of course the topic had to be soulmates. It was always about soulmates.
I left her there dumbfounded in the halls. It wasn't like I meant to do it, it was just a heavy and extremely sensitive topic for me. I was a malfunction, why couldn't anyone understand that!? The strain of being an outcast, getting laughed at, being judged. It all sucked. I had to move schools twice in elementary because of the kids that bullied me. The way they glared at me, laughed at me. The way their parents pulled their kids away from me as though I was a monster. Then middle school started, and I decided to hide my skin. Whenever someone would ask about my soulmate, I would divert the topic or just leave. Rumours began to spread about me being a malfunction...and they're not wrong.
I'm hoping to start anew, with a new town, a new school, a new home, a new life, just a fresh start from the hell I've been through and back. Brushing the tears that were threatening to fall out, I took a deep breath and looked down at my schedule.
Period one: History in Room 230
I wandered down the hall, eyeing the labels beside the door that shows the classroom's number. Soon enough, I brought myself to a door. A metallic label beside it read, "Mr. Mercury", and beneath was number 230. I took a deep breath, prepared for the attention I was about to receive from this class. As I exhaled, I took a step forward and opened the door. Mr. Mercury, a young man with sleek black hair and grey eyes, paused his lecture. On his wrists were the words: 'Mars'. Meaning he already found his soulmate.
"Sorry for the inter-" I was cut off by the eager teacher.
"Hello! You must be Ms. Capricorn! I've been expecting you, but I didn't think you'd come so soon! Please, take a seat. How about by..." He paused, scanning through the room filled with only individual desks. There was an empty seat in the front, but I didn't want to feel the class staring at my back. Thankfully, he pointed to a seat near the window, around the back of the class. To the right of my assigned desk sat a petite girl, with wavy ash brown hair and golden streaks. She wore a dark green wool turtle neck sweater. Her strikingly bright, yet soft emerald eyes watched me as I took a seat beside her.
"Hey, my name is Taurus." She greeted, extending a hand towards me, emitting a warm atmosphere around herself. When I grasped her hand in a handshake, I did not fail to notice the edges of a small tattooed sentence written on her forearm, mostly covered with makeup. Another one, but why did she cover it up?
"Capricorn." I gave her a brief nod, settling my galaxy backpack down, and taking my notebook out.
"Now where was I? Oh yes! And because of this, this was how soulmates were created." Mr. Mercury stated. And although I tried my best to ignore the pestering shivers, there was someone definitely staring at me.
~
The bell rang about twenty five minutes after I had settled down. By then I'd already cleaned my desk, and got up, ready to leave. I shook away the traces of paranoia after nearly everyone left the room.
"Hey, wait up?" A soft voice asked, I turned to see the ash-haired female putting away her notebooks.
"Oh.. yeah, um, sure." I replied, accepting her offer, not wanting to seem rude.
"What's your next class?" Taurus asked, walking beside me as we both exited the class. New students already filing in.
"Physics AP" I said, looking at my next period. Physics AP with Mr. Jupiter, room 241.
"Oh! Aquarius and Gemini are in that class! Would you like me to take you there?" Her emerald orbs lit up as she talked about her friends.
"If that's not too much to ask.." I winced when she mention Aquarius. I was not ready to face her after storming off on her right when we met.
"Of course not! It's three classes down my other class, English." She tugged on my arm, pulling me down the halls. I sighed, and to think I wanted to have a quiet, peaceful school year.
~~~~
In class, I was quickly introduced before I made a bee-line straight to Aquarius to apologize.
"I'm sor-"
"I'm so sorry!! I didn't know!" She blurted, cutting me of completely.
"I um- I'm sorry too, I didn't mean to.." I muttered at a lost for words. Heart-felt apologizes was never something I was good at.
"It's okay, I forgive you, and hopefully you can forgive me." She smiled, "Oh! I've got to introduce you to my best friend! Gemini!" She called to a girl with shoulder length dirty blonde hair, dark brown streaking them. Her onyx eyes were focused on the screen in front of her. "I swear to god, her cellphone is her soulmate." Aquarius muttered before calling the girl again. "Gemini!"
"Yeah sorry, just wait a moment." The blonde replied, her fingers typing at a lightning pace. "Okay." Setting her phone facing downwards, she adverted her attention towards the both of us. "Oh! You must be Capricorn, I heard a lot about you! You're actually a year younger than most of us, and you went to Horoscope Academy for middle school-- um.. right?" She ended nervously, revealing too much information. "Sorry, I have a habit of doing research before hand." Gemini said cheekily, playing with a loose gold and silver bracelet with a symbol that looked like two columns attached.
"Um, yeah, may I ask how..?" I asked suspiciously.
"Nope!" She grinned. "Anyways," She tossed her hair, "Did you meet anyone that was life changing?" She wondered.
"No..?"
"Oh, okay." Gemini grumbled.
"Hey, Gemini told me you were new to this school, welcome! I hope you enjoy Celestial High." As I turned around to see who spoke, slightly sweaty tall icy blue-eyes met my own. Gemini scowled, having been revealed.
"Woah, you have beautiful eyes..." I blurted, which immediately made my face heat up. "I didn't mean to-"
"No it's okay, I get that a lot." He chuckled, his glacier like eyes twinkling with silver, making my already crimson face redden.
"Yo Cancer, you are so late! I thought you weren't coming to school at all," The water bearer said, patting the taller male on the back.
"There was volleyball practice after school, and Pisces would kill me if I wasn't there," He rubbed the back of his head apologetically. A thick vintage leather bracelet with a golden crab and his name carved underneath it was attached around his wrist by a golden clip, almost completely covering a small batch of black words.
Noted. A slight pang in my chest did not go by unnoticed, but I ignored it. Instead my eyes widened at his mention of the sport. "You play volleyball?? What position?" I bombarded him with the question, my love for volleyball inspired by an anime.
"Do you play too? I'm a setter!" And before I knew it, we were in a deep discussion about volleyball.... and I didn't even know how to play it.
"Should we do something about them before she gets buddy-buddy with Taurus's crush?" Gemini questioned, pointing to us, oblivious of the conversations around us.
"Yeah proba-" Aquarius was cut off.
Mr. Jupiter walked in, with a scowl on his face,"I was gone for fifteen minutes and I'm assuming none of you have completed five simpleton questions sheet."
Hearing the teacher's authoritative voice, I paused my speech about a spiker's speed tempo. Mr. Jupiter turned his golden eyes that were behind a pair of glasses, to me. A disappointing expression was painted over his face, and I physically paled. "And you too, Ms. Capricorn? I'm very disappointed."
"I'm sorry." I squeaked, casting my eyes down, unable to make eye contact with anyone.
"Now please take a seat, somewhere preferably afar from your talkative friends." Mr. Jupiter said.
Aquarius gasped in the background, a hand to her chest, but did not say a word of opposition. Without a word, I picked up my backpack that I didn't know I'd taken off in my excitement, and walked to a desk in the corner as everyone's eyes trailed on me.
