Chapter Four: My Soulmate

For the most of art class, Gemini was in her depressive mood. She didn't bother checking her phone even though there was noise coming from it. And what didn't help was the fact that Ms. Muse, our art teacher was bipolar. Sometimes she's nice, kind, suggestive and supporting, and other times she's cruel, critical, and heartless, those faces flip just like a switch. They switch at most random times, making her unpredictable. And for some reason, she targeted Gemini the most, it could possibly be that she hates Gemini's guts, or she hates the fact that Gemini is currently disappointing her; for her student was silent, and frozen. Hopefully it was the latter. Not only was her duel-personality opposite from one another, so was her art. They were alluringly original, and beyond creative. Displayed on the walls could either be abstract, and colourful paintings, or realistic charcoal drawings, and a spectrum between. She had dark brown hair that was usually found tied up. Her eyes were also heterochromatic, shielded by a pair of rectangular glasses. But her eyes were not like those of Mrs. Saturn, unlike the central heterochromatic mixture in each of her eyes, Ms. Muse eyes were both separate colours. Her right eye, was a dull onyx colour, and her left, was a bright icy colour; to match her double-sided personality.

The many attempted to get Gemini to open up met a dead end, and she would look at me with cold bitterness as she shakes her head.

"He's got it all wrong." She would mutter as she stared blankly at the task at hand; to present the extent of your own unique conceptual art. Her dirty blonde hair draped down, covering her face, and ending like a mop on the table.

Every method I used to try and communicate with her went through one ear and out the other. She ignored me completely, she ignored everything completely. Maybe there was no hope, maybe its impossible for me to help her. I mean, I just met her today. I snuck glances at her, hoping any emotion will overcome her monotone one that is currently conquering her. The pencil in my hand scratched unpleasantly against the sheet of paper, as I sketched an outline of my project idea. I held back the emotions that threatened to drip into my art, as I continued, still deep in thought.

Maybe the others would know what to do. Please let Art pass by quicker than usual. There was nothing I could do, but watch her melancholy figure fight an intense mental battle. The sketch of the head of a lonesome wolf, howling for saviour trapped within a lost long haired beauty, was the emotion I captivated in my uncompleted artwork. The frustration of feeling useless in a time of urgent need was what I went for.

When the bell rang, I mentally cheered.  It is time to put an end to Gemini's misery! I swiftly disposed my work in progress in a bin labelled for my year, and grasp Gemini's hands to dragged her out of the room in search for the Soulmate class I thought I would dread. But in this crucial moment, my opinions didn't matter.

Struggling to locate the room, I luckily spotted a duo blue-eyed blackette, she was stealthily slinking away into the shadow, dodging everyone. "Scorpio!" I called over the mass of students escaping their class.

Her head turned as she heard her name. Her eyes spotted me quickly, for I was waving like a maniac to gather her attention. Scorpio maneuvered through the mob as swiftly and effortlessly as a ninja, dodging elbows and leaping over misplaced footings.

"Hey, what's wrong?" She asked as she stumbled over the last few to greet us. Her breathing slightly ragged from her short-lived journey.

"I don't know where Soulmate class is.. and Gemini" I motioned my head towards the dejected female that focused on the tiled floor as though it was the most fascinating thing to ever exist.

She did a once-over at Gemini before speaking, "Oh. I see. Aqua will know what to do. Just follow me." She turned her heels, expecting me to follow her as she strolled through the hallways of student, that were gradually disappearing into their respective classroom.

I glanced back at Gemini to see if she was stable. "Everything will be okay." I reassured her even though I didn't know the root of the problem. "Trust me." I tightened my grip to create an illusion of security and we followed after Scorpio.

Soulmate class was closer than I expected. When we entered, the chairs were set up in a semi circle, consisting of at least eighteen students. Sponge-shaped tables were pushed to the back of the classroom to give student more space. The rest of the Zodiac Squad was already present, seated at the furthest point of the crescent, to the door. Aries, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and a man that looked quite similar to Cancer were present, sitting at the nearest point of the crescent to the door.

Those in the centre were a mix of genders, though I didn't know any of them.

Cancer sent a smile towards me, and a wave, which I gratefully returned. The man that closely resembles Cancer, duo set of eyes were only focused on Scorpio. Though the black-haired beauty was eyes trained ahead, not bothering to look back. They were definitely Soulmates, and Scorpio refused to acknowledge it.

I pulled Gemini to the end of the classroom, and set her beside Aquarius, before took a seat at the only chair left, beside Taurus. Her, Scorpio, Libra and Aquarius were set between the distance of Gemini's seat to my own in that order.

Aquarius and Gemini were immediately engrossed into a conversation. The taller one of the two was ranting, a mix of confusion, sorrow, and jealousy, was spread across her face. And the shorter listened intently, nodding her head encouragingly, and giving Gemini her opinions and advice. They had a forever-bonding friendship, beneficial, and strong.

The teacher finally barged in, breathless. She leaned against the door frame while she heaved heavily. Her wavy ombré hair stuck to her face as she pulled them away.

"Ms. Venus-" One of the students in the centre of the semi-circle started but stopped when the teacher held up her finger.

"Shh, I'm, I'm okay." She panted. We waited patiently for her to regain her posture, except for Gemini and Aquarius, who were conversing in whispers. "Okay class, oh god that was quite the run, sorry guys, I was just held up by another student." She explained as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. "Oh! New student," Her golden eyes focused on me. "Hey, name's Ms. Venus, though I'm also known as Aphrodite, Eros, Cupid, and Matchmaker!" She winked at the last two names. "I'm one of the few who are blessed to see the red strings of fate."

"Capricorn, and the what..?" I asked, never have heard the term before.

"Even though everyone has their own type of soulmate feature, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE has a red string of fate tied onto their left ring finger, ya know, the finger connected to the heart." She elaborated. "Those who have lost their soulmates have a cut-off string tied to their finger, and those who don't have a soulmate, which is...." She trailed off, furrowing her eyebrows and she turned her head left and right to inspect something, "....99.98% impossible, don't have a string on their finger." She ended, the creases on her features diminished.

Unaware of her sudden concentration, I looked down instinctively, as if expecting the red string to miraculously appear. Though I wasn't disappointed when I saw none.

"But because of this feature, I'm destined to never have a soulmate."

"Doesn't tha-"

"It does not suck. I have come to accept it... " She answered, cutting off the student that spoke up, and making me recall an earlier conversation between myself and a certain mind reader. "But hey, it's pretty amazing when I bring two soulmates together, it's honestly really cute. But of course I would only help the student if them and their soulmate agree to my help. God would it be embarrassing to find out your soulmate didn't want to have a missionary to bring you guys together and wanted them both to meet coincidentally." She rambled on.

"Well as I promised you guys, today we will finally begin the introduction of types of soulmate features... for it would be great for us to know," She grinned as she looked down at us. "Since a few of us here are soulmates."

Aquarius, the wavy blonde haired girl, gasped in the background, immediately snapping her head towards Sagittarius. Gemini cast her expressive onyx orbs at Aries. Taurus played with the hem of her wooly sweater as her emerald eyes watched with pure warmth. Scorpio didn't seem like she cared at all, as though unfazed of the topic of soulmates. Libra changed her posture to seem a bit more charming, her head held high as to impress their possible soulmate that could share the same classroom as her. On the other side of the room, the six males that sat near the entrance of the room also had mixed emotion. Aries bend his head lower, dreading the topic, his twin brother looked semi-interested at the words on his palm, Cancer flinched, his pale blue eyes scanned the room cautiously. Virgo did not display any shocking emotions, but a slight hint of interest entered his features, and the one similar to Cancer, took a peek at Scorpio, his duo eyes shone happily. Leo glanced around with a bold glint in his eyes.

Ms. Venus let out a smirk, glancing around excitedly, recognizing the habits of jittery, nervousness, or excitement in her students. "But of course, if you wish to know who your soulmate is, they must wish it too. Now let's get started... which feature shall we talk about first?"

~

"Since there is ten minutes left in class, I would like you guys to commingle, if you have questions, you can come to me," Ms. Venus ended, the first part of the category of verbal soulmate features completed.

Students shifted their chairs to create circles of their friendship group. I moved my chair beside Gemini, looking for an answer for her earlier actions.

"So um... Gemini, what happened, are you okay?" I attempted to spark a conversation.

Aquarius and Gemini shared glances before turning their attention back to me. "So basically-"

"Okay so last year, Aries was extremely popular, and was considered the best basketball player even though he's a second year, and he's had many fan girls with him, and well so has Sagittarius. Well, you remember how the end of lunch time played out right? Where Aries thought Antinous was his soulmate? He's actually not. Or maybe he is but I'm going with my own theories. Before the event I wasn't completely sure of my feelings for Aries but after his.. heroic scene, my feelings for him was kind of confirmed." Gemini explained quickly in one breath, adding unnecessary information along with her point.

"So what you're saying is..?"

"I think I'm his soulmate." She concluded, confidently.

"Oh my, congrats Gem!!" Libra clapped, patting the long haired blonde on the shoulder.

"You should confront him." Scorpio suggested, "He's showing negative emotions over there and it's not natural for his egoistical self."

"I don't know, remember how that rumour that Aries could see a little bit of colour? I don't even know who found that out, like I didn't even know until a little birdie told me. Anyways many girls started confessing to him afterwards, and it was confusing for him because maybe one of his fangirls was his soulmate." Gemini shook her head, declining the idea. "And I really don't want him to feel worse."

"I guess that's true, but I think you should do it soon, just in case things do get worse." Taurus added, directing her eyes to the six batch of boys in a circle such as their own. "Better sooner than later..."

"Oh!" Libra exclaimed," Maybe you could make him fall in love with you and make him realize it himself."

We stared at her in a surprised silence.

"Or maybe not you know," She itched the side of her face nervously. "Sorry, that idea is h-"

"Honestly the best idea I've ever heard in my life." Gemini said, awed by the suggestion.

"But... how?" I asked, bringing them back to the cold reality.

"That's another question for another day, Cap, let me just sleep on the idea." Gemini grinned, her earlier depressive aura diminished completely.

"Or.." Libra paused, a wide spread grin on her features, "We can head to the infamous Astrology Cafe and plan it out, and if anything, you guys can head to my place."

"Sounds like a plan!" They all turned their heads towards me, waiting for an answer.

Eyeing all of them singularity for a moment, I responded, "Sure... I guess." I mean, how bad could it possibly get?

~

After the bell rang, the squad decided to split up to get their stuff, and return to the school entrance. A great oak with five ribbons tied onto its branches was our rendezvous point. Taurus's locker was just a few lockers down from my own, so we parted together. I had to call my parents to tell them the plan, which they excitedly allowed me to go. I wasn't surprised, for the last few years I've been isolated in my room doing homework, and they always pestered me to go out. They told me of their later plans to take a night out from unpacking, and have dinner together. "Okay bye, I love you." I ended the call before stuffing my cellphone into my back pocket.

"Hey Cap?" Taurus spoke up almost immediately after. She looked up at me nervously, as though she anticipated the end of my call.

"Yeah? What's wrong?" I asked, placing all of my binders neatly into the Galaxy backpack. Taurus stuffed her items into a dark green backpack with roses imprinted on it.

"Well.. I was wondering..." She murmured awkwardly as though she did not want to continue.

I nodded encouragingly, "You can tell me."

She turned her emerald orbs to the ground, focusing on anyone but me. Her cheeks tainted slightly red, and her fingers played with the hem of her woolly sweater. "D-do you like... Cancer?" She revealed, letting out a shaky breath.

"No?" Honestly I don't even know myself. Maybe I do like him? "Why do you ask, do you like him?" I directed the same question back to her, slinging my backpack over my shoulder, and lightly closing the locker to not break the tension.

Taurus tucked a strand of her long hazel hair behind her ear, her other hand fiddling with the straps. I could tell her hesitation was a signal that she felt uncomfortable.

"You know you don't ha-"

"Yes."

"I'm sorry?" I inquired, having not heard her properly.

"Yes, I do like Cancer." She said, meeting me in the eyes. Exhaling all the hesitation and awkwardness from her mind, she continued, "And you are not allowed to take him from me." She spoke possessively, her bold posture demanded me to say something of defiance.

"O-oh.. okay then.." I stammered, slightly intimidated.

"Anyways, the others must be waiting, let's go." The emerald-eyed girl said, closing her locker and walking off. I followed behind her, wondering what the other's personality twist could possibly be.
